Hopefully the 4K versions of his films start to appear on streaming services shortly...

Avatar - The way of water (Disney+)
I had a soft spot for the original but I've tried to get through this seemingly never-ending bore fest 3 times yet somehow there's still over an hour left. I can't face another sitting so I'm giving up here. Somehow it manages to look worse than my memory of the original, was it always this cartoony? Everything looks fake somehow, even the human actors.
3/10
I knew that after the smoke cleared the internet would begin agree it's utter wank. Glad I'm old enough and wise enough to have spotted this for the vapid nonsense it is, and avoided an expensive nap in the cinema.

I watched Abyss recently and I really like it. Nice to see Cameron just tell a story for the sake of the story without having one eye on the franchise.
As with all his films there’s some ridiculously cartoonish marines type characters in it. It’s a weird obsession he has.

I love the Abyss. My massive Man crush on Michael Biehn when I was young might have had something to do with it. It still holds up though, and I would love a 4K version with the proper ending which I've never seen.

I actually think The Abyss is some of Cameron's strongest work personally, I'd rate it up there with T1/T2 and Aliens.
Still remember seeing it for the first time, the resuscitation scene was and still is gut wrenching stuff.

As much as I enjoy The Abyss, I absolutely hate that resuscitation scene - it's just too much.

Does the 4K version of The Abyss in the UK feature rat "drowning"?

The resuscitation is a little unnecessarily boobie. It’s a bit odd.

I saw Die Hard in the cinema last night as part of a Christmas movie season. Gotta admit, TV really doesn't do the cinematography justice, cast is amazing and it's such a tight film.
Really glad I got to see it as I was too young in 88 😅

Napoleon
Well I dunno. It was okay, I guess, but I didn't care much for it. Not sure if it was the characters falling flat, or maybe it just did not have enough horses getting blown by cannonballs. An okay watch, but there are better ways to waste two hours and half, I think.
6/10
Ferrari
Got to watch an early screening. This was better than Napoleon, as far as biographic movies go. Not sure how much of it was embellished, I'm guessing quite a bit, and sometimes it felt a bit like pandering too. But it's a powerful picture nonetheless, and it didn't shy away from showing some darker sides of the story either.

Watched an interview with Cameron a few days ago at a screening of The Abyss. He hates film grain so all of his films may have T2 levels of DNR.

Ruby Gillman - Teenage Kraken
This was a fun enough movie to watch with the kids while we were all sick. Reasonably fun and not too demanding.
The characters and animation are all nice, but it feels like they re-edited it at the last minute and cut a bunch of stuff out, so the main plot is both (a) very cliched and predictable, and (b) not very satisfying. Plus the middle is basically one big montage, and the end feels kinda confusing and rushed.
A quick google implies a lot of people thought the same thing, and that they did indeed change the ending for one of the main characters (who was the most interesting character up until that point).
It's only 90mins, so they could really have done with adding a few more character moments in the middle of the movie and not messing with the ending.
Still, this kind of movie doesn't really need the deepest of plots, so it's not a disaster or anything. Just kinda disappointing that it doesn't reach its full potential.
Re-watched Zootopia before this, and that has a much better plot with some genuine surprises and twists.
Ruby G: 6/10 (but probably 8 for kids) Zootopia: 8/10

Watched 3 totally random films this week
Roadhouse - 8/10 Its still a cheesy classic and Swayze is great. But my god is it of its time, possible the most misogynistic film I've ever seen, do not watch this with any females around...
Lethal Weapon - 10/10 Still the Perfect cop buddy movie, Just as good as I remembered.
Black Friday - 7/10 Bruce Campbell Toy Store comedy horror, basically a stab at Evil Dead 4 after the end Army of Darkness (happy ending version). Its very evil dead (especially the horror visuals) and also quite funny in parts. The most annoying part is Campbell is not used in an Ash type character and instead used as the dickhead store manager.

Spiderman: Across the Speeder-Verse
Brilliant, even better than the first one, and I loved the first one. It looks great and is ever so ambitious, all without sacrificing strong, grounded character work.
Yeah it ends on a cliffhanger, but I could not give less of a shit.
10/10, what a great Spiderman

Is Roadhouse particularly misogynistic? I get that the female characters are incredibly stereotypical and have zero depth, it’s definitely not good or progressive, but it’s not exactly misogynistic in intent. I’ve definitely seen much much worse so if that’s the worst you’ve seen you’re doing well.
Match Point is famously awful for example.

I attempted to watch A Rainy Day In New York recently. And when I saw that it had a philandering, into-women-half-his-age director character named
ROLAND
POLLARD
my eyes just about rolled out of my head.

I’ve definitely seen much much worse so if that’s the worst you’ve seen you’re doing well. Match Point is famously awful for example. It had one scene where a guy is looking at another guys girlfriends breasts, the guy invites him over and says he can fondle and kiss them for 10 dollars, which he does. Another woman is basically abused and offered up for sex by the bad guy and his cronies all the way through, she then gets a black eye for flirting to much. Loads of other little things too, but basically has an undercurrent of Women are only sex objects for the men. They do treat the female lead better, but she doesn't exactly do much. Like I said very of its time but definitely more noticeable than other 80's movies. Probably more sexist than misogynist looking back.

Yeah I know the film very well, it’s one of my guilty pleasures. Again it’s definitely not good but more just of its time than particularly extreme.
It’s an absolutely ridiculous film in so many ways but such good fun.
