I've not seen much of early Hitchcock myself bar The Lady Vanishes and The 39 Steps. Loved the former (Charters and Caldicott always have me giggling) but never understood the love for the latter. Love the book too.
Still haven't seen Notorious either!

I saw Lifeboat recently which is another play-like limited setting one. It was very good. Great concept.

Frenzy has some incredibly tense moments - masterclass stuff, really. The only thing is it’s very rapey, as well. Quite an uncomfortable watch.

I know it was adapted from a play, but you can't beat a bit of Burton and Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. So good.

Frenzy always felt quite unHitchcocky to me. Almost feels like a D’Argento film somehow.

As part of my movie mission I’m on I looked back at Hitchcock to see what I was missing, and the guy directed almost a hundred movies. Absolutely ridiculous. I want to go back and watch more of his early British stuff. The really early stuff is worth watching for the film making techniques he was casually inventing, but they don't generally stand up as great watches. The Ring is pretty good, but in my opinion it's not until The 39 Steps that he started to make them great entertainment.

I love Frenzy. I think its my favourite movie of his (as in if I thought 'I could watch a hitchcock movie' thats the one i'd put on).

John Wick and the Deathly Hallows, part 1 & 2
Too long. 170 minutes of fuck all happening, I’d have been annoyed if I’d been stuck in the cinema. Best bit for me was about 10 minutes in where the blind man goes to meet the Frenchman, I had my wedding reception in that room.

Studio 666 (netflix)
Dave Grohl has writers block so the Foo Fighters move into an old LA mansion to try and write a new album and things get gory. Very fun, silly horror comedy. The special effects are legit, there are some top level music and movie cameos and the album they’re trying to finish is better than anything they’ve put out for real in probably 20+ years.
You can tell most of the band aren’t actors but Grohl is genuinely good and Pat Smear and the keyboard player are both clearly enjoying themselves too. Very good Saturday night movie.
9/10
Cool Daddio: The Second Youth of R Stevie Moore (youtube)
Documentary about the musician. Its nothing unique in the way its put together but he’s such a weird and interesting guy that its pretty compelling watching.
8/10
The Devil & Daniel Johnston (freevee)
Second music documentary of the day, both viewings inspired by me reading a book about lo-fi recording as an escape from capitalism.
Its a much more inventively put together film than Cool Daddio but I’ve always felt a bit uncomfortable with some of the coverage of Johnston. Where Moore seems like a Harvey Pekar-style all American eccentric who might have his issues Johnston undeniably has mental health problems to the extent where I worry a bit about how exploitative some of the coverage of him is. This film probably stays just the right side of the line but I think it did set the ball rolling for a revival of interest in him that went both ways in the 2000s.

Anatomy of a Fall - 10/10
Utterly engrossing courtroom murder mystery. Bloke falls of his French chalet balcony, his partially sighted son finds the body. The wife is in the house but doesn't see or hear a thing. Or did she...
What sets it apart from other murder mysteries is how it focuses on the narratives that get woven in court cases from the fragments of evidence regardless of whether they are a fair or tenuous reflection of the truth. Repeatedly, you get the prosecution's interpretation of events and think how is she not guilty, and then the defence steps up and you swing back the other way. It keeps you guessing constantly, is riveting throughout and I hope it gets Oscars. The acting is phenomenal.

Heart of Stone This was actually much better than I was expecting, as I know a few people here said it was shit. The first 10 minutes weren't promising, with some of the acting being a bit BBC drama, and quite a bit of 'here is some exposition' dialogue. But I thought after that it got much better. It's very much a wannabe-Bond, but with more plot twists than Bond usually bothers with. Some decent action scenes. Needed one more big set piece for the ending imho. In many ways it reminded me of XXX. An attempt to put its own spin on Bond that turns out pretty fun, but doesn't quite match up to the original. Speaking of XXX.. XHmm. It's very beautifully shot for a horror movie, but very predictable and not really scary. I feel like the predictability is intentional, as it's referencing horror movie tropes. But it's still predictable. I kept expecting it to throw in a twist or a curveball, but it never did. Or for it to have something deeper to say, which it never did. Other than a bit of gore, it's only real scare is Ew! Naked old people are scary!
Mia Goth got a lot of praise for her performance in this, but I'm not really sure why. It was fine, but I thought the other cast members were just as good and it didn't really stand out. Generic horror movie with a good 70s aesthetic and good cinematography.

It's Christmas film season already in our house.
Home Alone 3 - marginally better than i expected but still not a patch on 1 and 2. Daughter loves it though. 6/10.
Noelle - again, better than I thought it would be, and that's down to Anna Kendrick, who completely commits to the role. Predictable, obviously, but worth a watch with the kids. 7/10.

If you want a confusing time you should do Home Sweet Home Alone for Aisling Bea’s accent

Retreat 6/10 Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell an Thandwie Newton.
Decent single location thing where something of is happening. It’s not brilliant and the last 15 minutes really feels like no one read the script before they got to that point as the soldier performance makes no sense.

The Killer - 9/10 (2023 ) Probably wouldn't stand up to repeated viewings, but I was clearly in the mood for a slick revenge yarn and this delivered in spades. I still have no idea why he took the shot at the beginning when the woman was clearly just about to walk in front of him. All the talk of waiting for the perfect moment and that he would've been batting 1000 if someone hadn't died of a heart attack, then he does that... It just seemed so amateurish. Moon - 8/10 I love Rockwell's performance in this, which is probably a good thing seeing as he's almost the only person in it (I'd forgotten Matt Berry was briefly as well.) Bonus points for that Clint Mansell score too. Duncan Jones seemed destined for great things, then just fizzled out after that Warcraft film. Fingers crossed that Rogue Trooper is a return to form. The Game - 7/10 Not among Fincher's best work (that's obviously Alien³), but still a solid romp. Oppenheimer - 7/10 I certainly wasn't in the mood for this one. Kind of wish I'd split it across two evenings instead, as it really started to drag. Excellent performances all around (I especially enjoyed Blunt's cross examination screen towards the end) and it looked stunning, but it just didn't quite grip me (aside from the last half hour or so)

I found X to be quite dull. There's a shot with a crocodile that's good and a very realistic shotgun wound but that's it really.

Dune: Part One (Prime) - I wasn't quite into this as much as some of Villeneuves previous work (more due to having read the book/seen the Lynch version within the last year or so) but you can't deny it isn't a stunning film. 9/10.
Nobody - Never had Bob Odenkirk down as an action hero but I thought this was great fun and surprisingly funny. Good to see Christopher Lloyd looking like he's having a great time as well. 8/10.

Pearl Not totally what I was expecting (as in a full horror/slasher movie) but it was pretty good and quirky. Could have done without the scene with the scarecrow and the stag film (which was a real stagfilm!) bit due to watching with our 17 year old daughter!
Missus thought it was shite.

Gravity. 7/10. Enjoyed it.
Some of the lines are a bit lame but it captures the feeling of fear/awe of being in space. And how precarious your safety is up there, and how fucked you probably are if things go wrong.
Also emphasised to me how precious the earth is.
Must have been great in an IMAX.

It was OK. Some really good bits and some baffling decisions in the story arc. Didn't seem to have much Fincher DNA, but perhaps I'm misremembering past films.
