Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu
I loved Steins;Gate though I had no idea this movie follow-up existed. It gets off to a bit of a shaky start with the gang all assembled seemingly to cram as many of their catch-phrases and signature banter in as short a time as possible. It's all a bit much. Once it settles down though it's great, with the typical mix of heartfelt story and nonsensical time-travel gobbledegook.

John Wick 4
Yeah it's too long, yeah it's probably the weakest of them overall, I get it.
But there's still a lot of fun stuff in it. Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins in a fat suit, the German rave where people getting axed in the head CANNOT STOP THE DANCING, Clancy Brown, all the nonsense po-faced lore.
It's just a good time, even though it outstays its welcome. Even a mid John Wick is still better than most other modern action movies.

Oh, and the other weird thing I love about it is the Arc de Triomphe fight. Because there's all this gunfire and stuff going on and NONE OF THE TRAFFIC STOPS.
I like to think that the civilians in this world are just so used to assassin fights that it's just something to take into account when going to work. Like bad weather or something.

Strays: Was this good? As a comedy, not particularly. I just had it on in the background, and just because we have a Boston, which is the Jamie Fox character. It is hard to watch animated movies with really recognisable A lister voices like Will Farrell imo. Some stuff was amusing enough for people who love dogs, and some feel good factor. Though not particularly funny, unless you've never seen a dog hump anything or piss on anything before.
5/10 for having on in the background.

How To Have Sex - 8/10
Inbetweeners: The Movie, albeit from the perspective of the women and with more rape-y ladz. Pretty brutal account of three teenage women who go for the lash in Malia, but one has a dreadful time and no one else really has the lived experience or maturity to help her. A stark reminder of what a fucking weird time it is being 16, on the cusp of adulthood with the stabilisers off for the first time.

Ghost in the shell (w Johansson)
8/10
I hadn't seen it before, but I was quite wowed from the start by the soundtrack and visuals. The second half and plot wasn't nearly as strong though.

Ambulance
I'm not a particularly big Michael Bay fan, though I enjoyed The Rock and Bad Boys back in the day, and much of my displeasure is rooted in the Transformers films (which are genuinely shit), so I usually end up watching his films out of curiosity. So I went into this not expecting much.
But against my better judgement I actually enjoyed it. It's not going to be a classic but it rattles along at a quick pace, and some sections are very well executed. It does start to flag in the second half.
The action is mostly practical effects, and whilst it has some grubiness and seediness (it's Bay after all), it wasn't as seedy as Pain & Gain, and didn't have as much conservative HOO-RAH worship as 13 Hours, so its Bay's best film since, well, The Rock. Which isn't a high bar, but I actually enjoyed it so it's done something right.
I'm sure if I rewatched it I'll find things to be objectionable about, but right now it's a very high 7/10, and some sections stray into 8.

Ambulance is the most GTA movie since the first Crank so I loved it. The use of drone cameras is superb.

As much as I’m not a big fan of anything by Bay post Armageddon, occasionally his camera and stunt work is outstanding.
Also sometimes it’s terrible.

Talk To Me
Scary, well acted and shot. Good modern horror that captures kids messing with things they shouldn't. The scares do start to slow down the more it goes on but it got the ending spot on which a lot of horrors don't.

Trading Places - Yikes that train scene out of ten. Seems like I never saw this properly -- some of the language doesn't really fly today, but generally it's enjoyable with some decent laughs and a great cast. Every time I watch an older movie it makes me realise how conditioned I am to modern movie pacing. The film takes an age for the plot to kick in.

Scarface (1932)
I’m on a bit of a mission to flesh out my cinematic knowledge and in particular watch films of cultural significance from the past.
Kicked things off with the OG Scarface which loosely served as the inspiration for De Palma’s version, and there are clear similarities along the way.
It’s quite cool to watch a film about old school prohibition era gangsters actuslly made in the time it was set. Obviously the film has aged in a number of ways, but it also suprised me how technical some of the shots were including an amazing one-shot opener that has all sorts of brilliant things going on with shadows and silhouettes and transitioning from outside to in. Very impressive. The central performance is very engaging and a few of the set pieces are still very impressive, particularly the Valentines Day massacre.
All in all I really enjoyed it. It holds up well and is very watchable. I’m looking forward to other gangster films from the era now such as Public Enemy and Little Ceaser.

Dream Scenario
Early screening via Cineworld. Nic Cage plays Paul Matthews a rather boring, tenured professor who suddenly starts appearing in random people's dreams all over the world. He pretty much turns up as something is happening (like someone being hunted by a monster) but does nothing much but passively observes and then wanders off.
He has done absolutely nothing, he doesn't actually see the dreams he just pops up and initially he enjoys the celebrity with how it means he'll finally get his book published. However those who experience him start to take it out on him as his dream self starts doing things that aren't passive.
The film starts well enough and is quite funny but it rather loses its way about halfway through and while you're initially sympathetic to Paul he does something that pretty much shows he's a POS and you stop caring.
While I enjoyed the film the trailer really over eggs the comedy of the situation, it's not representative of the whole film.

On Her Maj's Secret Service
Making use of Prime. Been such a long time since I watched this through and I know it's had a retrospective loving.
But I'm not convinced. Yes, it's more "serious" but this really should have been Connery's swansong. The editing and pacing also doesn't help it. I forgot how badly the ending is handled.

Big weekender:
Mean Streets - Some early Scorsese and I think his break out film. All the cast are great but Harvey Keitel and Robert de Nero are the standouts and there are so many great moments (the pool room scene being a favourite) that the time just flies by. The usual great soundtrack as well. 10 Johnny Boys/10.
WarGames - First time watch and was surprised just how relevant the film is today with a rogue AI and threat of nuclear war from Russia. It was also interesting seeing the early tech being used and how that has been repurposed by scammers. Matthew Broderick is decent for one of his early roles. Defcon 8/10.
Demolition Man - Another first time watch and was always under the impression it was terrible for some reason. Its certainly one to switch your brain off for but I thought it still looked great and found it surprisingly funny. Stallone, Snipes and Bullock all look like their having fun. 187/10.

Although first time around I didn’t know what Taco Bell was so that bit went right over my head.

When it was released over here every mention of Taco Bell had been replaced by Pizza Hut which was the one I saw originally, eventually they phased that out and the US Taco Bell "proper" version is all that's aired now. I remember seeing the Taco Bell version on TV years down the line and wondering what the hell was going on.

Snipes was such a fun actor in films. Shame he fell from the limelight.
The Blade CGI eyes always makes me laugh at the sheer pettiness.

After Hours - 5/5 (CRITERION 4K, BITCHES)
Number one on the hipster Scorsese ranking and probably the best in the 'buttoned down slightly creepy normie guy meets hot woman for night of kooky adventure and peril' sub-genre, although I prefer Something Wild.
The whole way through I was just thinking: 'damn, Scorsese is the best.' He's made so many different kinds of movie, it's mad. This is such a flex on his part, and reading about it afterwards it was an exercise in style in order to prove he could continue being a filmmaker, which is also mad. There are more inserts than master shots and you can see the influence this had on Edgar Wright, for example. It's frenetic to say the least. So. Much. Cocaine.
I wish Griffin Dunne, John Heard and Catherine O'Hara could have been in more of his movies.
4K disc is lush.

Quiz Lady - 2/5 (Disney+)
Disappointing. You'd think a Sandra Oh and Awkwafina double-header road-movie would be a slam dunk but the script is dull as dishwater. It also stars Will Ferrell and Jason Schwartzman but even they can't liven it up. It just takes far too long to go anywhere and then when it arrives it isn't worth it. It's just so bland. It attempts wacky slapstick at times but it all falls completely flat. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if it was written by an AI.
Do not watch the trailer, it contains all the gags.

Demolition Man and Judge Dredd have both merged into one film in my head. Can’t tell them apart without re-watching. They are both of a type together. I’d be down for any excuse to rewatch them too. You don’t really get that kind of fun action film anymore now the MCU has destroyed the competition and turned itself into homework.

65 (million years ago)
Adam Driver plays a space pilot whose ship crashes onto a planet after being hit by asteroids
The twist? He's an alien and the planet he crashes on is Earth. 65 million years ago.
It's not very good. Somehow it makes dinosaurs pretty boring, using very out-dated depictions of dinosaurs. And it's got some very clichéd hazards, including quick sand.
It's perfectly watchable, but in a very perfunctory way. It's the kind of film you forget almost whilst watching it. Not sure sure why Adam Driver is in this film, must have wanted an easy pay cheque.
4/10

Apparently he did it because his son loves dinosaurs. (I'm sure a big sack of cash helped too of course) It really was a bag of shit!

I saw it on TV a couple of years ago and it had Pizza Hut stuff all over it, which I didn't remember and was really confused by it. I'd just put that down to my bad memory, but maybe I had seen the original somehow?
