Have you not seen Superman 5? Seriously? It’s the best one.

Superman Returns is deeply flawed but also with its heart very firmly in the right place. I used to have a lot of time for it but the Singer/Spacey combo really makes it unwatchable now. This is the aliens 3 chat of superman movies, but I actually shed a little tear in the first 10-15 minutes. The opening titles and the plane rescue are absolutely *chefs kiss* (and you have to remember that this is pre-superhero fatigue, we had waited decades for this) and then it just completely runs out of steam.

I always quite liked it. As you say, the opening absolutely nails it. I liked Routh too, which bought a lot of goodwill for me.

The opening titles to it still rank as one of my favourite cinema moments. They absolutely nailed it. Megagoosebumps.

I know this is beyond a trueism but John Williams is just such a don. There may be more sophisticated score composers but nobody bangs out an iconic theme like he does. The music makes those films.

Clockers Not Spike Lee's best. Bit jerky and all over the place. Absolutely hideous placement of music. I don't think there's more than 3 minutes of dialogue that doesn't have a soundtrack. A shame because some of the performances are good but it's unfocused and a bit of a mess. Scorcese would have done it better. 5/10 Criminal. 7.5 for me.

I know this is beyond a trueism but John Williams is just such a don. There may be more sophisticated score composers but nobody bangs out an iconic theme like he does. The music makes those films. Him, Alan Silvestre, James Horner and (some) Hans Zimmer are all up there for me. Williams is quite a way ahead given how many iconic scores he’s done. There are other good composers but they don’t seem to manage to create a great theme for their films.

He might not have as many iconic pieces under his belt as the above, but I'll go out of my way to watch a film just because it has a Clint Mansell score.

He doesn’t have many iconic themes under his belt but Michael Kamen could get really driving score under a film (Die Hards, Lethal Weapons, X-Men, Band of Brothers, Prince of Thieves etc)

Didn't Superman Returns and Batman Begins come out pretty close to each other? I seem to remember thinking they were about level in terms of quality, if both not perfect. But BB became this huge franchise and SR seemed to get abandoned and forgotten. *goes to look it up*
ta da!!!
SR was almost exactly one year after BB.
Their critical scores are pretty similar (70s), but the audience scores for BB (80s) are a lot higher than SR (60s).
Clearly I'm a critic.

I think a large part of that is how much SR relied on and fed nostalgia rather than doing anything new out different which is what Batman Begins did. Most of the more negative BB comments are about it being a bit more grim than they wanted.

I liked both. My main issue with Batman Begins was the fight scenes being shit. I think a lot of people didn't like the ending to SR either, although personally I liked it.

I don't even really remember Superman Returns coming out. It certainly didn't seem to make waves.

Everyone was so shocked at a famous celebrity dying of polio in the 21st Century that it kinda drowned out the Superman Returns hype.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
Was pretty pissed so it was amazing. Just utterly ridiculous and made no sense but somehow quite fun.
Objectively it's not great but why would you watch this objectively?

Not only does it feature part of my home town in the opening sequence (40 miles from the London it's supposed to be) but the big bad's base is McLaren HQ in Woking. The last bit explains why there's so many McLarens in the film and why Shaw drives off in one in Fast X.

I thought Superman Returns was utter kack! Didn’t he lift and fly with a giant rock the size of a continent which was full of Kryptonite or something?
