It remains the only good film with dinosaurs.
King Kong had its moments.

And it still has the best looking dinosaurs of the series I dunno, the 3rd one had great effects too

Spider verse 2 - 8/10
Such a pleasure to be in the presence of such rampant and exuberant creativity. Although I’d have been ok with being in it for less than two hours, as well as having a bit of forewarning that I was only watching half a movie in that time

Saw Spider-verse today. I did like it, but don't think it quite had the spark of the original. Impressive that it manages to juggle so much at once, whilst still making it coherent, but I can't help but feel it could have been better with more focus. Didn't need to be as long as it was either, particularly considering it is only half the story.
Absolutely gorgeous as well. I particularly liked the look of Gwen's universe. I could have had a whole film looking like that.
Seen a few people unaware that this was a part 1. It was definitely announced as such and I think the original trailer might have referred to it as the first part too. Perhaps they decided to drop the part 1 from the title, for some reason.

I knew there was a part 2. I didn’t know it really should have been called ‘Spider-verse, the first half; second half is next year, mate’
Two part season finishers for ST:TNG had more narrative closure in their part one. Nor did they have twenty or so central characters they were asking me to remember till even next week let alone a whole f’n year, after a two hour plus run time.
I’ll still see the second one but I feel it was taking the piss too much.

Avatar 2 - 8/10
As a film it’s above average, but as a spectacle it’s probably the best thing you’ll ever see on screen. It looks incredible in 4k hdr on Disney plus. The last hour is also absolute top tier action.
I unashamedly loved it

Antman 3 - 7/10
It’s very watchable and majors villain is great (doubt we will see him again though). But I’ve now already forgot just about all of it…

Guy Richie’s The Covenant 7/10
It’s not bad, mostly kinda predictable but isn’t too heavy on the pro America propaganda. It’s a bit long for what it is.

Maybe they shouldn't have renamed the films but it was never a secret that this was the first part of two.

Release timing for Spiderverse sucks. I want to see it this week but it's been pushed off all the big screens by Transformers and The Flash, mostly just showing in the tiny ones with a few rows.

Malignant (Prime)
Horror/thriller from James Wan piqued my interest. Really enjoyed it and boy did the final third step it up a notch!

Luckily the localish cinemas are still showing this on screen 1 or 2 which is good. Seeing it tomorrow. I haven't been to the cinema In yonks. Each year I say I should go more often but never do. Become a bit of a hermit so should venture out into civilisation at some point

The boy went with a mate this afternoon. Loved it (no spoilers though thankfully). I suspect I'll have to wait for streaming now.

Living
Up in Prime this one. Bill Nighy wonders what the hell he did with his life and Aimee Lou Wood brightens it up for him. Really nicely done film, very understated, excellent acting by everyone. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

How to Blow Up a Pipeline
Low budget thriller about some eco-terrorists who plan to blow up a pipeline. Similar countercultural feel that films like Edukators or Baader Meinhof Complex had but with the ticking clock of a heist movie.
It looks really good and the characters are a bit tropey but all do their job just right. As a thriller movie it absolutely does the job. As a political film, I’m not sure it fully captures why whats happening is necessary (the book its based on is exclusively a discussion of that).
Plus its nice to see a good old fashioned, grounded, character driven thriller done well these days.

Spiderverse and The Flash are same weekend here, but since it turns out that The Flash isn't 'the greatest superhero movie of all time' (tm) after all, maybe that's less of an issue than I thought. Transformers isn't until the start of August. I'd been kinda ignoring it, but the Fortnite crossover might mean the brats want to go. From a quick scan of reviews it seems like it's not as good as Bumblebee, but also not as horrendous as the Bay movies. I guess it was too much to hope for another Bumblebee, but it sounds like they at least learned some lessons from that, even if they did feel the need to stick in the massive robot battles. Might be at least bearable.

The Hobbit trilogy - 7.5/10
A bit of background first: After watching The Rings of Power with the family (see the series thread), we watched the original LOTR trilogy together. They enjoyed them, so since the Hobbit films are also on Prime, we decided to watch those as well (hadn't watched them yet myself either).
And I must say I actually really enjoyed them. I'm not sure how faithful they are to the book (it's been too long since I read it), but I found there was plenty to like. The length also did not bother me (although it probably helped that we watched them over 6 evenings, like a mini-series). The only weak bit was the end of the final film, which seemed a bit cut short ("ok, battle done, Bilbo goes home"). Of course I was not looking for the infinite endings of ROTK, but a bit more closure would have been nice.

Did a free trial for Lionsgate (it's a bit shit)
Reservoir Dogs
Really great film. I respect the fuck out of its runtime. Loses a point for featuring no dogs.
9/10
Clockers
Not Spike Lee's best. Bit jerky and all over the place. Absolutely hideous placement of music. I don't think there's more than 3 minutes of dialogue that doesn't have a soundtrack.
A shame because some of the performances are good but it's unfocused and a bit of a mess. Scorcese would have done it better.

Men of War (1995 - Prime) - Dolph Lundgren leads a group of mercs to clear out a remote island. I thought this had some potential with some great island shots but I don't think the action is that great so the one dimensional characters/90s cartoon villain come more into focus and that's before we get onto the acting. 4/10.
Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection (1990) - Ditches pretty much everything to do with the original film and becomes a generic action film with Chuck Norris. 3/10.

The 5 movie Reeve Superman set is 20 quid on apple tv at the moment. Havent seen the Donner cut, so really looking forward to that. I like grabbing these cheap box sets and ploughing through them sequentially.
You also get a free Brandon Routh movie, too, similar to how some crap about a Crystal Skull came free when I bought the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Superman Returns is deeply flawed but also with its heart very firmly in the right place. I used to have a lot of time for it but the Singer/Spacey combo really makes it unwatchable now.
