The FablemansReally nice to go to the cinema and watch something without explosions. Spielberg is quite good at this storytelling lark, isn’t he. Clever girl / 100 No explosions? /crosses it off my list There’s a train crash at the very beginning if that helps? ;-)

I read that its his best film, which feels like a huge claim considering everything else that he’s made It’s good to hear because he’s been a bit off the boil in recent years, and the autobiographical nature of this makes it feel like a swangsong, so I’m glad it’s good. The trailer made it look like the most sickly mawkish thing ever too.

It's not his best film, but I really enjoyed it. I thought the arcs were covered really well, and not overly schmaltzy though your millage may vary.

Yeah, calling it his best film is probably pushing it a bit, but I loved it. Clearly a lot of himself is in there and it almost feels autobiographical (it isn't, but I'm sure many of the events either did actually happen or have counterparts to actual events). It isn't afraid to cast the characters in a bad light though and they are clearly all flawed individuals. Lots of nods to his past films, which are fun too. I think it does dip a bit in the middle when they move to California. It feels a little aimless at that part and the threads we have been following before become a little looser. It comesback together as it goes on, but that piece did stand out. It does feature a very funny section though, so it certainly wasn't dull. Being a big Lynch fan, I absolutely loved the cameo at the end and it probably left me feeling better about it than I probably should, but think I would say it was my favourite of the Best Picture noms that I've seen.

The Eiger Sanction. 7/10.
There are two kinds of Clint Eastwood film. He’s always distant, sardonic, gruff and intimidating, but sometimes he wears a cowboy hat, too. This film is one where he doesn’t wear one, but it’s boilerplate Eastwood nonetheless.
The offensive caricatures come thick and fast (one bodybuilding type even literally looks like a cartoon character) and date the film somewhat, but the cinematography and the crazy stunts are what sets this apart. Clint Eastwood is a fearless man.
You should watch it, it doesn’t deserve to be forgotten.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever
One of Marvel’s baggier movies. Its acting as a tribute to Boseman, full length origin story for multiple characters and a reset for the BP series. Plus Tim from the Office and Elaine Benes get a lot of screen time to do basically nothing.
Its fine but its very unfocussed and it feels very long, almost more like bingeing a series than watching a single film. I think they either needed to drop a couple of plot elements or make this two movies. Its not like they’re operating under any real limits when Disney has infinite money and Black Panther was a huge movie in its own right.
A little disappointed.
7/10

The Batman. 7.5/10. What better way to spend my strike day than watching a loooong film that I otherwise wouldn't get round to? It was actually quite a bit better than I expected. RPatz is a good Bats I think, and I liked his departure from Bale as Bruce. Zoe Kravitz was decent too. Gotham looked great too. As ever, I'd have axed a good 30-40 mins from it but it didn't drag too badly.

I've been to where it's shot in both the summer and winter seasons and it captures the area wonderfully. Having stood under the Eiger looking up, it seems insane that they actually shot it on the mountain itself, with Eastwood doing his own stunts. It's the most opresive rock face I have even seen with my own eyes by some margin.

Pulse (1988)
Techno horror with electricity trying to kill a family in a house.
This is more competent than what I thought it was going to be with shades of Poltergeist about it. It's a likeable enough film just not particularly scary and is more of an interesting watch than anything.
5/10

Plane
Gerry Butler is running out of things to fight in action movies so this time around he's fighting a storm, a broken plane and evil Filipino criminals. I won't spoil how he gets on but it's not too surprising. I had fun with it, it's not a film that'll make you think too hard, it's actually got some fights that are a lot more involved than your usual Hollywood blockbuster and Mike Coulter is pretty good value as the man being extradited (his use of a certain tool looked very painful). It won't be troubling any awards ceremonies next year but if you want a popcorn action flick that almost certainly won't be shown on an airline movie selection give it a bash.
It's Far Cry x Ghost Recon with Butler playing a Scotsman for once. 7/10

Gerard Butler is one of those actors I'm not sure how they've had a career and belongs to the potato head gang with Channing Tatum.

Fuck me, I want the two and half hours back wasted on Jurassic World: Dominion, that was awful.
I enjoyed the first Jurassic World (for what it is) but they've continued to ramp the cheese up beyond acceptable measure with the sequels. The action was far too shiny too, with no real jeopardy.
Should have known better.

I’m the same. Sometimes you really get a strong reminder that studio notes, producers and the TV commissioning process existed for a reason. When the latest MCU films are between 30-60 minutes longer than the early ones, for example, it can’t just be franchise fatigue that has me questioning whether they’re earning that screen time. I said it when Strange Things 4 was coming out but I honestly think they should just release a 12 hour block and let viewers chip away at it as they see fit. As much as I enjoyed the show the episode breaks and lengths were totally arbitrary and structureless so the next logical step is to just smush it all together.

100 minutes is the perfect length for a film imo. Any more and I get antsy.

I don't mind a long film. Last weekend we did the Godfather trilogy, and a few weekends ago we did the extended Hobbit and LoTR trilogies back to back.

If it can't be told in 1.5-2hrs, then the scriptwriters are not doing their job well enough.
Almost 3hr films can GTF.

Black Panther 2 is 2hrs 43?! But hatless take 3 viewings to get through for me these days.
I don’t get why they do it. The plot rarely needs it, people aren’t asking for long films and it costs a lot more to make.
