Best thing about the original Top Gun is the sound track, minor sequel music spoiler - time from start of film to Danger Zone is very brief.

Chip N Dale Reboot (2022)
This is far too meta and full of references that would go right the fuck over kid's heads. It's alright. Elicits some chuckles.

I felt that way too. I thought the trailer was strong, but the final product really didn't do much for me. It wants to be Roger Rabbit again, but it's nowhere near as good.

I’m really looking forward to this. Watched the original this week in prep and, well, it’s pretty crap. The original is definitely of its time, other than iron eagle I can't remember much else like it then. I just seen the new one tonight, really enjoyed it, but I do think I preferred the first one when I saw it aged 14.

Top Gun isn't all that, outside of 80s iconic stuff, but Tony Scott films the shit out of the aerial sequences.

Top Gun Maverick
The original was absolutely iconic in it's day. An all time classic and perhaps Cruises best, and when you consider his full catalogue that's saying something.
I can see how youngsters and people seeing it for the first time today might wonder what the fuss was about but Top Gun had a cultural impact as well as being a movie phenomenon.
This was never going to "Top" that (fnar) in the same way that 2049 was never going to be better than Blade Runner.
But it gives it a damn good go.
I don't know how to review the story without spoiling some of the surprises, even though much of it is super obvious. It's got Tom Cruise and fighter jets in it, ok? But it has heart and smarts and there are a few surprises and delights along the way.
If you're simply looking for an action movie with feels, this will do. But if you also happen to be a fan of the original, then go and see this in the cinema, it's definitely worth a trip. I thoroughly enjoyed most of it.
But I have to shave a .1 of a percent off. I don't know why, I just do.
9.1/10

Totally not a spoiler for Top Gun but I’m going to spoiler tag it anyway… was anyone else livid at how shite the pint of beer was that Jennifer Connolly poured?! She missed the top 2 inches of the bloody glass!!!

Do the air scenes in Maverick feel like CGi or proper planes? I've heard they're mainly proper planes, but a few shots in the trailer still looked rather cgi to me.
Top Gun 1 is iconic. For such a simple cheesy story it always hits me right in the feels.

The bigger the screen the better for this, I think.

It's funny that when the first trailer came out 2 years ago, it produced a bunch of airforce pilots on youtube saying "there's no way this could be real planes. Its clearly a mix; the antagonist jets (country not named in the film), look real, but can't be. Same for a sequence right at the end of the film. But it looks, AMAZING.

Top Gun Maverick drinking game : take a shot every time they say "fifth generation fighter"
It's fairly obvious it's the Su-57.

There's something telling that the good guys were flying 4th gen hornets, rather than the carrier varient of the F35, which was shown in the openening sequence.

Art Scholl died filming the flat spin the the original. They put a big camera on the wing of his stunt plane, unbalanced it and he couldn't recover it.

Becky
A 13 year old girl gets revenge on group of convicts who terrorise her family.
The obvious comparison is Home Alone but more violent. It's all on Lulu Wilson who plays the young lead but I think she does a great job as she moves between angry and near primal. Kevin James is also there as one of the bad guys. I really enjoyed it and thought it was over the top fun.
8/10
Happy Death Day
Groundhog Day meets slasher film. I really enjoyed it.

The Batman 10/10
I thought this was tremendous. Cast were fantastic especially Pattinson and Kravitz. Loved the tone, reminded me of Blade Runner, Mad Max and other favourites. Sorry I missed it in imax but nothing to fault here and although it’s a long film, it doesn’t feel it and I’ll definitely watch it again. Superb

Big fan of the main character. The sequel is ok, but I didn't like it as much as the first one. I think there's a 3rd one in the works? If it didn't either come out already or get cancelled due to Covid. Not seen Becky. I'm always a bit unsure on movies that have young kids doing graphic violence. It can be lots of fun (Hit Girl, Hanna, etc...) but it does sometimes feel a bit icky and exploitative. You're Next is another low budget horror along vaguely similar lines. Absolutely awful acting at points, but fun enough if you can look past that. Totally different, but if you're doing obscure and slightly off-beat horror type movies, try Wyrmwood. The sequel just came out, but I haven't had a chance to see that yet.

The Bob's Burgers Movie
Do you like Bob's Burgers? See the film.
Don't know anything about Bob's Burgers? Watch it, it's on Disney+.
Thought it was great, pretty much a very long episode but with more threat than the TV show has and I don't remember any episodes that start with someone, other than pests, being murdered.
Most of the usual characters pop up, even Jimmy Pesto but he doesn't speak for reasons.
Fun time with a bit of a darker edge than usual.
Plus I agree with the robot...

Top Gun Maverick. 9/10
It feels like a very good modern version of a Bruckheimer 80s action film but could have easily been made back then. They didn’t try and do something different and it’s all the better for it.
Not sure it could have been better at what it is.

Saint Maud (2019)
Not what I was expecting - more on the complexities of mental illness than true horror. Those modded trainers could cure my back ache though.
8/10
The Beastmaster (1982)
Generally avoided musclebound fantasy films as a nipper so enjoying catching up on some of the "greats" in my balding years.
It's no Conan (saw for the first time last year) but it's not without charm either, even if Singer's voice is far too weedy.
8/10

Operation Mincemeat - 7/10 That was actually pretty good, and the hand shandy scene didn't seem too out of place. Macdonald's accent was just fucking bizarre in places. Why even bother?
