To be fair I haven't watched that one since the 90s so god knows if it's aged well or not. I know! I watched them all recently (not sure if that makes me God). Do you mean Dream Warriors or New Nightmare. Definitely not the former, although it is fun in a very cheesy way. New Nightmare hasn't aged brilliantly, but is still much more interesting than all the other sequels. |

I vaguely remember Hellraiser 2 just being them wandering around a maze for what felt like forever. I remember liking 2 but being put off by the poor composite effect of the main villain near the end looking like absolute crap. |

The 355Due to lack of free time, I ended up watching this over 3 evenings, which probably isn't optimal viewing. As an action/spy movie it was ok. There were a couple of reasonably good action scenes, and the main performances were mostly good. But it's all a bit one-note and lacking something original or stylish to give it a bit of kick. The fights and gun battles have oomph, but they're not up there with something like John Wick, it doesn't have the charm of something like Bond, and could really have done with a car chase or helicopter/train scene to give it a bit of a change of pace from all the chase/shoot/fight scenes. The plot is a pretty predictable macguffin chase, but until the final 3rd it doesn't really have the sense of non-stop pacing that something like Taken has. So yeah, it's fine, if a bit one note and predicable. The main 'plot twist' is visible from the first 5 minutes. Sebastian Stan does a pretty good Bond audition though.

Yeah, they really ran Hellraiser into the ground. It's one of those series where I sometimes get the bright idea of watching the entire series thinking that eventually they'll be so bad they're good, like Nightmare on Elm Street. They do get bad. Just bad. That goes for both They remastered the first four hellraiser films recently and I got them on Apple. Made it up to the third and called it. Can't even stomach the fourth which, from memory, I gave up on first time around. The third is such an obnoxious cheesefest. Didn't rate the second much either but it at least feels like a logical follow-on from the first and you can't fault it's ambition, even if you can fault it's effects. You missed out. The 4th one is the best (if that's the space one - can't quite remember) |

The best thing about watching Hellraiser 2 now is seeing how much Garth Merengi stuff was just a straight copy and paste from it. They didn't need to even make it more overblown or ridiculous for the purposes of comedy, it's all just there as is.
It's also fucking awful. The first is good, if a little bit clumsy in direction (peak hubris for Barker). It all went to shit from the on.

My biggest gripe with 2 (and I actually like the franchise, even the shit ones) is where the Kirtsy is wearing Julia's skin and pretending to be her.
And looks just like Julia.
Now - If you were to skin someone and wear their skin, you would look like a horrific bloated caricature of yourself wearing the loose fitting skin of your victim.

Disappointing. Serviceable sci-fi-ish drama, but lacking comedy. The premise is great and it looks the part, but the cast is wasted. Wanted it to lean more into the campy costumes and characters.

Took one for the team and watched the new Hellboy.
Itâs not as bad as I was expecting to be honest. The core of it is pretty good, itâs well shot (except for the effects), and itâs closer to a proper Hellboy adaptation than any of the others.
Buuuuuut itâs definitely miscast. And the effects really are absolutely awful. Not just the CG. You can literally see the latex folding on Hellboy whenever he moves. It also mostly falls apart towards the end and turns into generic âfight the zombie extrasâ set pieces.

Been a while since I saw this and it mostly holds up, the approach of throwing as many jokes at the screen as possible really helps. Surprising how little of the humour is at the expense of others, itâs definitely a bit offensive but not as bad as I thought.

Hold Your Breath - looks great, some really good effects and I dig the overall vibes but there really is only enough going on here for a 45 minute episode of a horror anthology.
When itâs good, itâs really good but for a big chunk of time itâs just so boring. Itâs stage play-esque, charting a motherâs descent into madness (?) while trapped in a cabin with her kids so nothing really happens for vast swathes of time.
I dunno, itâs alright. It tries to do something different but falls on its face a bit.

Silent Hull (2006)
the film is 18 years old now and while it changes some of the story of the 1st game, its pretty faithful to the game. The homecoming game takes a lot from this film, like how the order looks, PH is just wandering about, zombie nurses. There is a dumb plot device despite sharon screaming about the town, why would you take your daughter there when you googled the places and its burnt out town (which you leave on the laptop screen for sean bean to find)
the film could of been a lot worse if other directors and writers could hold of it. The town is well recreated and looks like it should. the sequel which is based on the third game, I remember kit harington being in and he knows nothing about acting in that

Steve Martin flick from â89. Iâve seen this several times and have always enjoyed. Itâs just a well put together slice of exaggerated family life. Plenty of laughs, although this time around I did find myself being a little judgemental at some of the parenting decisions!

A Quiet Place
Decided to watch this with the kids as itâs currently on Prime and perfect now the nightâs are getting darker earlier. I think this is a fantastic example of a stripped back horror/thriller which revels in âshow, donât tellâ.
Itâs tight, tense, economical and well performed.
A great companion piece to something like Signs in terms of âmy first horrorâ types that you can share with the family.
10/10

Terminator 2 - Going through the terminators with the girl and getting mortally offended when she laughs at something (although, yes, âbad to the boneâ is super cheesy and gives away that he isnât a bad guy immediately, Iâll concede that one).
She also pointed out that Terminator 3 should have been about the Cans, Cars, Knives and Forks that became sentient after being made from the steel the T1000 was melted into.

Dog Soldiers was the last VHS I bought alongside 28 Days Later. 28 Days Later has such an interesting look to it because I think it was shot on digital rather than film but like 2003 digital so its got a funny filtered noisy grain look to it that film-films from the same period donât have. Solid pair though, a good uni night in. IIRC it was done on wee Sony digicams, youâre right. It was just around the time that tech was becoming affordable for people too. I remember getting a digicam that recorded onto tapes and thinking itâs amazing. You could press a button and take 1mp stills at the same time that recorded to a stick! edit: It was the brilliant looking Canon XL-1. Which you can buy for 200 knicker today! |

Watched 2 movies recently I had no idea about beforehand, apart maybe reading some mention somewhere on the web. The Boy - Maggie from the Walking Dead plays an American girl working as au pair for an affluent English family where not everything is what is seems. I thought it was pretty good and had fun watching it. Had no idea about the twist, I believed to the end that some ghost was behind it all , that's how naive I can be. 8/10 Strange Darling - easily the best thriller/horror I watched this year. Also had no idea about the twist... and that final scene - wow! Felt like a Tarantino movie in some parts. 10/10 |
