Terrifier 2
Apparently people criticised the first Terrifier for lack of plot/narrative. Apparently the director was listening, because the sequel drops in a whole lot of plot, delivered by newspaper clippings, TV reports, and a whooole lot of people talking about Art the Clown (who is still silent, and very much not dead). The runtime is 2 hours and 18 minutes.
It felt like 5 hours. I looked at the progress bar when they got to the climax at the haunted carnival, and there was still 40 minutes left!
In case you couldn't tell, I was pretty bored by this. There's still some absolutely disgusting murders in it, but they're spread out pretty thin. Art is still the star of the show, but I don't need to know about his backstory thanks! He's a killer clown, that's enough!
Anyway, I didn't hate it. But the first one was better imo
6/10

For me Terrifier is a bad horror film. But I come from the perspective of that, when you show me gory details, that isn't particularly scary. Sure, it's a grindhouse B movie horror film, that's what you get. But, at times it felt like verging on a late night channel 5 soft core porno, without the sex. There was little to no plot, other than.. ah we're going to kill a bunch of women really grotesquely.

I dunno... I'd never call it a masterpiece or anything, but I enjoyed it for the gross out fun. The sequel just dilutes that with a lot of junk (though the characters are better tbf)

Yup, very much the same here. Although while I wasn't the only one laughing, I was definitely in the minority in the screening I was in. I think it was just me at my local cinema. To be fair there were only like 12 people in there tops. I did hear a couple leaving saying it was fantastic so at least I wasn't the only one who got it. It was the first movie I’ve ever seen where the audience all clapped at the end (except me). Was probably 30-40 people in there. They all got it. I didn’t clap as err it’s a bit weird. I would have if it was the premiere where the people who made the great movie were in the room.

My audience basically all clapped. Yeah it's a bit weird, but film festival atmosphere is a little different. They knew what kind of film they were watching.

Maybe when I was a kid something like bad taste was funny gross but porn torture gore some movies go for.

Spaceballs (1987) *** I adored this film as a kid, and I was curious if it held up. The tone is weird; it's so broad it's basically a pantomime, but it's also pretty crude (which is probably why it's so appealing to a child). As a Star Wars parody, it stood fairly well alone in the 80s, so maybe its jokes hit a bit harder; nowadays it feels more scattershot. It can be hilarious, with some inspired bits of meta-humour (putting in a VHS of Spaceballs to find out where to go next), sci-fi riffs, and typically Brooksian gags that skewer aspects of Judaism or antisemitism. In short, it's interesting, enjoyable, mostly funny, but not the classic I thought it was when I was six. (Prime Video)

I watched Airplane fairly recently, and I've seen it a lot more than Spaceballs (which I reckon I'd not seen for close to 30 years).
Airplane holds up really well, it's still absolutely inspired and hilarious. The only thing that's dated is some of the jokes are a bit dodgy nowadays.
And yes: I loved it when I was six, but not as much as Spaceballs, because it wasn't really lampooning something that I was familiar with. I'd probably never seen a disaster movie before I watched Airplane.

Airplane's script being almost entirely that of "Zero Hour!" is something of a work of genius.
ZAZ weren't involved with Airplane II The Sequel but it's still good, I saw it once in the cinema in a cross channel ferry going to Belgium on a school trip to Germany, the rough weather made it like a 4DX performance before it was created.

You don't even need to know about Zero Hour to appreciate Airplane!, it works completely on its own. The wordplay humour makes it timeless imo, there's very little in it that you need to be able to understand a reference for (aside from knowing who Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is, I guess). And there are a few jokes you absolutely couldn't make today, but not really that many of them.

Last time I watched it, which I think was about two years ago, I couldn't decide if the "I speak jive" bit was racist or not. I have to admit - assuming good intent from all sides - it was still quite funny.

How strange i watched Airplane last night, I didn't think some of the jokes were that dodgy tbh, moreso because it didn't feel like it was punching down. Its just silly comedy and it goes for everyone and never feels mean.

Airplane still has the greatest end credit scene of any film.

Can't find it now as I'm sat in a cinema...

My favourite bit in Spaceballs is when President Skroob is sprinting down to the front of the ship and then stops and says:
"I had to run. If I'd walked, the movie would be over."

Megalopolis - 3/10? Who knows...
When you're a millionaire and you're bored of smelling your own farts, you make this. If it wasn't for Adam Driver, it would be 0/10 frankly. Veers from preachy nonsense from a senile pervert about the future of humanity to absolute incoherence to Shia Leboeuf in Roman drag who fucks his sister.
I think 3 might be generous.

Haha I had tickets for this tonight after work but decided I didn’t fancy two days in a row at odeon and the reviews are all over the place. I decided smoke, drink and 2077 instead. Looks like I made the right choice.

Walking home from The Substance, that's an experience and a half, watch Kermode's review of Megalopolis, he's on the fence...
Nah not really, it's not quite his Sex and the City 2 review again but it's close.

(Prime Video) Lets not forget that Disney/Marvel put out an MCU film *last year* where the villain has the same plan for stealing air as happens in this film.

Nah not really, it's not quite his Sex and the City 2 review again but it's close. I just read the Little White Lies review for it - David Jenkins is a big fan and he makes quite an impassioned case for it. He conveys the atmosphere and sentiment of the film well, but it didn't do it for me.

I think the only reason Kermode doesn't call it a big pile of shit is because he can't swear on the podcast/YouTube.
Tempted to see it so I can compare it to Cats.

My favourite Kermodian take of recent years was when he critiqued Clifford:The Big Red Dog by saying Clifford was too big.

Just got back from watching The Substance, still processing everything and definitely bits I enjoyed and parts that I wish they'd developed more. The main takeaway I had is that a certain tv show is exploring a similar concept in a more interesting way.
