Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton: This is Stones Throw Records (2013) - 80/100 - A documentary charting the history of Peanut Butter Wolf's record label. Ridiculously good soundtrack (by Madlib) as would be expected. It's really well paced and edited from interviews with a great range of contributors.
Raising Arizona (1987) - 95/100 - Cracking performances all round. Wonderfully realised world. Witty dialogue mixed with visual jokes. An absolute delight.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) - 70/100 - Guy Ritchie makes a war romp. Much better than I was expecting. Ritchie is relatively restrained - it's not trying to be clever and doesn't take itself seriously. Great charisma in the cast and you can tell they were all having fun with it. It's utterly ridiculous, but fun and didn't feel like it's 120min runtime.
Sherlock Holmes in New York (1976) - 65/100 - Objectively average made for TV movie with Roger Moore in the lead, Patrick Macnee as Watson, and John Huston as Moriarty. The story is OK, and it plods along whilst never being particularly exciting. But it's peak Roger being Roger and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it (on the sofa, ill).

I enjoyed the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare also. The crazy thing being how much of it is based on a true story also... Albeit it sounds like there was much less bloodshed!!!

The Worst Person in the World
This film sort of resonated with me. I've been through periods of my not committing to things, perhaps not hurting people to the extent of the main character. I'm not entirely sure it was deserving of all the critical acclaim, I think sometimes these awards are banded around too much, when there are films is overall depth and complexity, but it's just a good film about someone who can't decide what they want out of life.

Street Fighter II - The Animated Movie
Loved this as a ten year old Street Fighter fan and still have a soft spot for it 20+ years later.
Some of the fight scenes are quite good and really well animated. The high energy soundtrack and some of the dialogue is so over the top it actually becomes endearing. Bison's dialogue in particular cracks me up. Character designs are spot on too and the kid in me still gets pumped when Ryu and Ken team up to "take out the trash!" at the end.
Oh, this time round I learned Bryan Cranston voiced Fei Long too.
Nostalgia/10
I remember watching Street Fighter Alpha years later and being incredibly disappointed. Awful film.

I had no idea Cranston was Fei Long. Loved that film though, some of the fight scenes were great.
Though on rewatches of the opening fight scene I did start to wonder just how far away Sagat was from Ryu when he started to charge Ryu down.
Sagat was sprinting full tilt and Ryu has a good 10 plus seconds to charge a fucking hadoken. Starts to feel a bit Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Hah, I thought the exact same thing watching it yesterday. They're a few metres apart in the establishing shot.

Would love to know what Capcom’s line of thinking was when they signed off on the gratuitous shower scene.
Maybe something along the lines of “look, our fans are really sad. They’ll lose their minds over it.”
And we did.

The Substance
Its a very unique film and overall I enjoyed it a lot. The cast is great, Demi and Margeret are great in their roles, also Dennis quaid is having so much fun. The filmhas energy to each scene. Cinematography is great as well. The only reason can't say it was best thing in ages is the film should of ended when Sue reuses the substance again and they could of just had a quick flash of the monster she has become. The film had been quite serious and it turns into really bad b-move "shlok" Actually laughed at the scenes where the monster is trying to be pretty and the reaction from crowd. Its a major shift in tone, it didn't seem best way to end the film.
Also made the film a bit too long imo. One minor thing is (and not really a spoiler) Elizabeth never pays any money for the Substance, you think the people that makes it get something out of it
8.5/10

Threads. 40th Anniversary showing at Broadway Nottingham.
Small introductory presentation and then it was back to 1984. Hadn't seen it since the original airing but it still has a powerful documentary air.
A muted auditorium once the credits rolled.
Amazing how many scenes had stayed with me all these years.

Capcom knows that when it comes to Street Fighter sex sells, some of the character designs point to that exact fact.

Why on earth would you put yourself through that again! Not only myself but my wife and 18yr old! A dose of such unrelenting bleakness was probably unfair. I asked him what he made of it... "Grim" Succinct.

I still chuckle when anyone compares it to "The Day After", yes America is pretty damn fucked after the bombs fall but it's never humanity possibly has one or two generations left at most before it's done levels of bad. It even has a disclaimer at the end that in reality things would be much worse, perhaps don't pull your punches when showing how bad nuclear war is?
I think the BBC are putting Threads on TV again for the anniversary as well, I've seen bits of it again since I saw in 1984 but I'm not sure I'd want to see it all the way through.

It was interesting to see how bloody old society looked, yet was the beginning of my teen years.
I wonder how an updated version would be taken - so long as it remained as down to earth. No big names, no 'gloss', focus on a family or two and how fucked we'd all be.

Capcom knows that when it comes to Street Fighter sex sells, some of the character designs point to that exact fact. Yes, but there’s a difference between skimpy outfits and outright soft porn. The simple answer is that it was fan service, but usually companies are a little more protective of their IP. Even in the thoroughly rated R world of Mortal Kombat the nips have stayed under wraps despite every other piece of fabric (and skin) being whipped off. And it's not necessarily an East v West thing because DOA - a series whose success was based entirely off of tig ol’ jiggly bitties - keeps things relatively demure. For more on this, pre-order my forthcoming book “Video Game Tits - A Retrospective” from Amazon and all good booksellers.

I've never seen any of the Street Fighter films, I'm not a particularly big fan of the games and so not into the wider franchise, but the only thing I could tell you about that film is that Chun-Li has a topless scene.
So I guess maybe whatever they wanted to do worked?!

The worst thing about the Chun-Li Shower Scene is that the fight after it is arguably the best in the movie but the tape was always worn out at that part and you couldn't watch it properly.

Yeah... I'm probably the only person to ever use that word to describe DOA.
Anyway at the risk of derailing the thread (and not especially wanting to start a new one based on this) I should just close out by saying the reasoning behind it as a PR stunt made sense... 1) It was the nineties - norks were everywhere. 2) Post-Akira anime had gotten a foothold in the west and this stunt was one way to keep the core demographic of young, male gamers interested in the west. 3) Capcom were aware it wasn't just kids and teenagers buying into Street Fighter 2 and this was marked that games were also being played by young adults.
But it was an outlier, in that it was never attempted again. Or rather... it was, but only once. When Sega launched Last Bronx on the Sega Saturn they did a cross promotion with the Daily Star that saw Jo Guest and other Page 3 models do shoots dressed as the characters. But Sega were losing a war and Last Bronx was an IP that few people cared about over here. They were willing to roll the dice at that point. And it failed miserably.
Games have flirted with nudity on and off for as long as they've been around, but I think this was the only time they did it with a flagship character. It wasn't a surprising move, perhaps, but an unusual one nonetheless.

TIL I learned user Rawshark knows his game related tits.
Also Last Bronx was legit for a Saturn game.

Like I say, book coming out.
Last Bronx was great - very few games were able to capture the visceral impact of getting twatted with a big stick as well as it did. But on the other side they had Soul Edge... it wasn't a fair fight.

The DOA movie wasn’t very titillating either from what I remember. Which isn’t much to be fair. Kevin Nash looking a bit like he’s in cheap Hogan cosplay and Felicity from Neighbours in her pre-far right politician days.

Hentai scenes were pretty common in manga films back then, weren't they? So probably not that unusual Oh they were common. Just not with video game IP. They never tried anything similar with Lara Croft, for example.
