In an attempt to get the thread back on track.
American Fiction
Pretty good. Characters were all great as was the acting (especially by Sterling K Brown).
You're beaten over the head with the central message of the film but I feel that's the point. The ending was quite clever too.
7/10

Trap
Right. So from concept to execution this has to be the most ridiculous film I’ve seen in recent times. And your enjoyment of it will vary wildly on how willing you are to buy into that.
Anyone going into it should probably have fair warning that Saleka Shyamalan is in this film A LOT and has all the stage and screen presence of, well, M. Knight Shyamalan. There’s a common theme I find with films where there’s a concert or stand up act in the film where there’s a remove between the audience on screen and you watching them react. The audience might be going wild but you never really buy into that because what you’re seeing doesn’t warrant that reaction. Plus there are times where the film almost forgets it’s about a serial killer and focuses more on her performing on stage. It can get a little maddening, I won’t lie.
But… but but… Josh Hartnett does just about enough to hold this mess of a film together. I ended up buying into the stupidness of this dumb, dumb film and did end up with a slightly lower IQ but walked out feeling like I’d enjoyed it overall. It’s about as YMMV a film as any I’ve seen recently.
So, it’s 4/10 if you go in expecting a good film or pay good money for it…
6/10 if you can watch it for free and can just switch your brain off for the whole thing…
And it might have been 9/10 if Shyamalan had any sense of humour and called his daughter’s pop star character “Lady Nepo”

Woah I'm an alien I'm a legal alien I'm an Englishman in New York A song about Quentin Crisp who was played in The Naked Civil Servant by John Hurt, who four years later is the first Xenomorph victim, the circle is complete.

Prometheus - why did I bother / 10
Have recently noticed a bit of a reevaluation of this, people now claiming it's not that bad, so thought I'd give it a rewatch. Not sure what those people are on.
What I liked: The cesarean scene is brilliantly horrific and really well done. The basic concept of an android running biological experiments on an unwitting crew is interesting and could have made for a much better movie if it was all stripped back and better writers were involved.
What I disliked: Literally everything else. The religious and origin story stuff is pretentious. The dialogue is awful. The cast is way too big and the characters paper thin as a result. The music is strangely ill fitting throughout. I could go on and on. It's garbage.
I think my opinion has changed from "it absolutely never should have been made" to "it perhaps could have been quite good with competent writers involved". Gonna continue pretending this movie doesn't exist.

Genuinely wishing I'd watched that four hour movie about the posh chef instead.

Road House
The Gylenhall remake, not the Swayze one.
Do I really need to mention how terrible it is? Was looking for a "leave your brain at the door" kind of experience, but somehow I still feel less clever after watching it. Which is unfortunate.
Connor McGregor is shite, too.
Thankfully it's over/10

Vivarium - 8/10
Oooo, this was a nice surprise, and strangely the second film in a couple of days that I've watched themed around cuckoo behaviour. A young couple are house hunting and go to view a house in a very strange, identikit neighbourhood. Things get weird... It's kinda Truman Show meets Cube vibes, a sci-fi/horror blend which is also very much its own interesting thing. Recmmoend.

Bonus demerits for writing some of the most unlikeable/pointless/stupid characters in recent memory. Imho its the worst Alien franchise movie simply because how up its own arse it was whilst being that shit.

Blink Twice - at a cinema
Directorial debut from Zoe Kravitz, which applies a very heavy dose of Get Out to #metoo. Naomi Ackie plays Frida, a young financially struggling woman that ends up bumping into billionaire Slater King, played by Channing Tatum, and invited to spend time with him and his friends out on his island.
Lots of drug and booze fueled partying follows, but something else is going on to all of them on the island that they can't quite remember...
It's a little slowly paced, despite a short running time, taking a while to get going. The tone is also so like Get Out that it feels like it is chasing the coat-tails of that film a lot. But, it is still an enjoyable time and gets nasty when it needs to. At times it is very on the nose and a tad predictable, but there are some smart, interesting choices throughout that elevate it above what it could have been.
A few funny moments dotted throughout. I particularly liked the lamp shading of the stupidness of going along with these men to the island. A clever joke playing on both genre conventions and the real world.
Wouldn't say I loved the film, by liked it a lot and definitely has me interested in seeing what Kravitz does next.

Done some Horror and comedies the past week.
Maxxxine: 6/10 The weakest of the X trilogy imo. Thought it was just not as tight and well paced as the others.
Long Legs: 6/10 It was decent. Cage was freaky, but overall fairly forgetable stuff.
Baghead: 6/10 Awful name for a film, and pretty much a rip off of Talk to Me with a far smaller budget, and not as good. But a decent watch still.
Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates: 7/10 Pretty good fun. Ove some Aubrey Plaza and Adam Devine. The Kumail Nanjiani is quite something lol.
Dirty Grandpa: 8/10 Love the cast in this. Aubrey Plaza, Zac Efron, Jason Mantzoukis all so funny. De Niro also hilarious, even though you would think he'd just phone it in for this type of movie.

I rewatched Prometheus recently and its basic problem is that it needs a film to happen. I actually do like the ideas, the setting, the visuals, the music and all that stuff its just that the only way for it to have a beginning, middle and end is for people to act as dumb as possible to move the story on because the setting requires a level of competence none of them display even once. Same with Covenant. I think it would have been better if it had just been walking archeology movie, uncovering gradually more and more disturbing things as they made their way through a weapons lab and the final boss just being the engineer.
Its like making a movie about changing a plug. The only way you could make it interesting is if the electrician decided to do it in a swimming pool while punching a shark.

The plan would have worked perfectly if the cryopods had enough fuel, they would have been in and out in 30 minutes and off to the indie system.

Can anyone explain why Idris Elba crashes the spaceship? The engineer decides humans are bluclarts and is going to destroy earth. It’s not a warship so that was the only way to stop him

And isn't their technology extremely advanced, so they would surely know he wasn't successful and that life on earth still existed? Maybe they beliveed this is the only living Engineer still in existence. Maybe reading too much into it lol.
