Gave 28 Days Later a rewatch last night, having not seen it since the cinema. Enjoyable, but looks like a student tv project and fully embraces the questionable decision making that horror movies seem to love. Also didn't need to see quite so much of Cilian Murphy's ballsack. Feels like a 7 out of 10 for the first half and maybe a point less for the later bits running around in a mansion. Was also interesting to spot quite a few parallels with Civil War.
28 Weeks next.

The talk of Wicked Little Letters reminds me of a thing I catch on YouTube every now and then where actors - Olivia Colman being one of them - read out old letters and correspondence, usually to humorous effect. Worth checking out if you need a quick chuckle.

That it was all filmed on digital made it look cutting edge at the time but it does lend it a nu-metal music video flavour at times now.

Aliens (disney+)
Again, a 10/10 all time classic, of course. Main point to flag here I suppose is just how good both of these films still look. The visual design is obviously iconic but after the cgi soup of too many MCU movies going back to films like these where everything is real and solid and proper care and effort has been put in to make everything look worn and lived in is a real pleasure. I know these aren’t new opinions but its been a few years and the memory doesn’t do them justice.

If it's Redux, then you have made a mistake. For years it was the only version I had seen and thought it was a bit shit. Saw the theatrical version quite recently and loved it. I knew the original was supposed to be better, but it is amazing just how much better it is.
If it is the theatrical version you are watching, then you are living up to the title of this thread.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes of the Valley of the Dolls of the Not an Alien Romulon Review I like the Caesar trilogy, so glad to go back to that chimpy world. There’s a lot of scene setting that takes place and I felt while that was necessary given the time jump, it’s still slower and less interesting than I’d like. However things do pick up in the second half. CGI feels too smooth and weightless but considering it’s basically an animated film with some live action it does ok. I want to see more but hope it does something new rather than go back to apes v humans 7/10 Also not to piss on the dramatic nature of it, but if the clan had chipped in a bit I’m sure there wouldn’t have been any need for the eagles to get involved. LotR all over again.

Alien³ (disney+)
The one responsible for the 10/10 all time classic video game. The film is pretty great too. Having Ripley land on a planet populated entirely by notable British character actors certainly helps. Watching them back-to-back like this really highlights how of their time each of these films are. Despite how well they’ve aged you’ve very much got a 70s, 80s and 90s film across these front three. The stylistic touches Fincher brings means that the despite being the having the largest cast it feels more like a film location and less like somewhere people might actually live.
This was the theatrical cut. I prefer it as it feels like a tighter film. Land on planet, alien stuff happens, finish.
Consistently underrated movie.

Trap Well, it wasn't too bad, but i did have to suspend my disbelief... a million times maybe? The concert half was the most interesting part, even if the way employees and police officers behaved, nevermind around a guy who fits the description, was nothing short of baffling. After they meet the singer, it all kinda goes to shit. Also I'm not sure why they try to pretend the big "reveal" is a climatic moment when it was obvious from the start and even from the trailers already, you didn't need a Sixth Sense (wink wink) to realize what was coming. It does start ramping up some tension again near the end at least. Overall a movie that can only be enjoyed if you check your brain at the door. I know my Shyamalan at this point, so I did exactly that, and wasn't overly disappointed. 6/10

The beekeeper (sky cinema)
everyone wanted something dumb and trashy after beers and BBQ last night and it was dumb and trashy but it was not good. it made $150 million at the box office ($40 million budget) and shame on people that saw it at the cinema. Jeremy Irons and Jemma Redgrave slumming it for a pay cheque. it would of been better if Statham dressed as a bee as he runs around fighting people as sequel to crank 2.
The way they act like the beekeepers are the john wicks of these world (they even have the hive where they call room like in john wick and use old tech for calls, but have green screen chunky computers) Sky are calling it sky original, its like ubisoft calling their bland cookie cutter games originals
2/5

Kong Vs Godzilla - Whatever the fuck the 2024 one is called - 5/10 I started watching Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and loved what I saw of the CGI. It felt like a cut above anything else I've seen recently. I had a "shit, my missus will probably want to watch this too!" realisation so stopped a little way into, and for some bizarre reason picked a film that felt like antithesis to its approach to CGI. Just a bland soulless world where scale of the monsters and their place in that world always feels like an afterthought. The cast are mostly unlikeable cunts and the only one I remotely liked gets killed off early on. He was an unlikeable cunt too funnily enough, but was actually acting like that, not just existing Everything that happened is just plain fucking stupid, like the prototype for a power glove they have lying around that miraculously happens to have three injectors that cure Kong's mortal injuries including nerve damage from frostbite Even the soundtrack is laughably bad, with kitschy synthwave that just doesn't fit the film or even what's happening on screen most of the time. I feel like I've been a bit generous with the score actually...

Mad Max 2 (Cinema) I wondered if I'd made a mistake going to see this on the big screen, as the intro was all in low res 4:3 in the center of the screen. Then the most 80s title card ever. But after that it opened up into lovely high-res widescreen. This one is a hard one for me to judge, as I saw it so many times when I was young that I knew everything that was going to happen. As with a lot of 80s movies I've rewatched recently, the pacing and editing is a lot slower than we're used to with modern movies, and lots of 'big' iconic moments are a lot shorter and smaller than I remember. Characters I remember being important only get seconds of screen time and maybe one line. Though in fairness, Max only gets about 15 lines. Gibson does a great job with the role though. I love how totally fucked up max gets by the end. It gets better as it goes along, and the final tanker chase scene is still great, and longer than I remembered! Having watched Fury Road and Furiosa recently, the tanker chase is a bit less impressive than it used to be. But it's still really well done, and doesn't have any of the obviously sped up footage that appears in earlier chases. I love how miller tells stories and shoots action in such a coherent way.
Some of the shots are still amazing, although it has a much more gritty/realistic feel compared to the color grading and OTT stylisation of the recent ones.
It's really hard to pick a winner between this, Fury Road and Furiosa. But I think if you put a gun to my head (with ammo in it) I'd probably have to go Fury Road > Furiosa > Mad Max 2, which slightly surprises me. MM2 is still great, but I think he managed to surpass it in later ones. Still a solid 8.5/10 though.

Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros (at a cinema)
The newest thing from 95-year-old documentary veteran Frederick Wiseman. This one is about a family of French chefs/restauranteurs, who have been operating the same 3-Michelin-star business for more than 50 years.
If you've never seen a Wiseman documentary before, much of his style is just to point the camera at people doing things (like their jobs) and just watch. There's no interviews, no talking heads, no character introductions or narration or background music. Just the camera pointed at people talking and doing things.
In this case, what they are doing is absolutely everything you would associate with operating a high-end restaurant. Going to the market for fresh produce, visiting farmers and meat suppliers, having meetings about menus and dishes and wine selections, preparing and cooking and plating food, having waiters memorise menus, chatting with guests, etc. There's an extended bit about making cheese.
It's absolutely fascinating to see professionals at work like this, and is about the most extensive look I've ever had at this kind of kitchen.
(it's also 4 hours long, but honestly the time flies by)
Better than two Romuluses put together.
10/10

Misericordia
A French black comedy/thriller about a young man Jeremie (who looks like a cross between Joseph Gordon Levitt and Barry Keoghan) returning to a village to attend the funeral of his mentor. He stays with the widow, who thinks he had a romantic relationship with the deceased. Her son is an old friend (or lover?!) of Jeremie, and he thinks Jeremie is sleeping with his mum. There is also another guy who picks mushrooms that Jeremie tries to sleep with, and a local priest who wants to sleep with Jeremie.
Who will Jeremie sleep with? Everyone? No-one? Only some? Oh and there's a murder too, cops sniffing around, and things get weirder and weirder.
Everyone in this town is odd, basically, and so is this movie. It's about mushrooms and queerness and sexual repression and guilt. It looks great, and all the performances are appropriately kooky without going over the top.
RECOMMEND
8.3/10

When I was a kid I thought the term "Black Comedy" meant a comedy starring black people. Which it did. But it also meant something else. I was very confused.
Now I'm thinking why isn't there a term called White Comedy...

Regardless. Are you sad about the film festival ending? Yes! Watching movies is much preferable to working. Anyway, last one... Caught by the Tides The latest from Chinese indie-adjacent realist filmmaker Jia Zhang-ke, about a mute woman and her on-again-off-again relationship with a businessman/real estate developer/petty crime boss. Set over a few points in time over the last 30 years or so, most recently in 2022. This director usually has a particular way of establishing a time and a place. In this one he takes documentary-style footage that he's taken over the last few decades (even some footage from previous movies), and mixes it with the acted stuff. It's very effective imo, it really puts you in 2006 without the need for a lot of elaborate sets and costumes. It's not my favourite of his movies (personally I like Platform and Pickpocket), but it's still right up there with the best I've watched this year. 9/10

Fall - 7/10
A textbook seven film. Two women get stuck atop an enormous radio tower for 90 minutes. Absolutely absurd. Badly acted. Terrific fun. It's on Netflix. Fill your boots.
Cuckoo - 5/10
Dan Stevens still so hot right now, here replete with dodgy German accent. Horror film about a mysterious Bavarian resort with something or someone that comes out at night. Or so it seems... Absolutely shits the bed in the final act. Found myself completely confused and it's not a particularly complex story, just a completely bungled script.
