Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2/10
Just boring. Nothing interesting happens, there’s some casual racism/stereotypes that were disappointing more than offensive in this one. The whole series has made me never want to watch a robot based action film again.
It’s better than the last Knight but the seriousness of it doesn’t help it.

I have a very large soft spot for the original Road House, hugely rate Jake Gyllenhaal and thought the remake would be worth a watch.
Well it kinda was, until Connor McGregor shows up and stinks out the place with one of the worst performances committed to film. Fucking awfully comical (unintentionally) and totally fucks with the tone. It wasn't particularly good before that, but it was serviceable and had some decent moments.
The other big gripe was the editing for some of the fight sequences (and a moment of horrifically bad CGI) which just added to the weirdness of this mish-mash. It was almost as if two separate films were cobbled together in post.
There were some funny parts, there were also some fleeting moments of decent acting and story, but ultimately this was just a fucking mess. Need to rewatch the cheese of the first, because the remake had none of that charm.

Won't have a bad word said about the original. Hey Mola, do you wanna fight dickless?

I mean your first mistake was expecting something good from Connor McGregor.

I love the original, no bad words uttered.
To be honest Jambo once the movie started I forgot he was going to be in it, that was a pleasant half an hour or so.

As regards the original, I didn't watch it until later in life. So it didn't have the whole "R18+ movie in a video store" appeal that it probably would have had, if I'd watched it as a teen.
And it's a fun movie! But fun in a shit B movie kind of way. The best kind of B movie, really, because they thought they were making a serious action movie, and instead made an unintentionally funny "so bad it's good" kind of thing.

Doon 2 - 10/10
Lavish. Hundreds of millions of Hollywood dollars well spent.
Hard to fault, although having not read the novels, by the end it felt like there may have been a lot of absent explanation/lore from the books, which would have better explained some of the many characters' motivations come the finale. I could have done with another 30 minutes to be honest to let it breath a bit more. But equally, it absolutely whipped along.
IMAX was incredible too. My seat was literally shaking with the bass.

The mistake is taking it seriously to begin with.(Edit -McGregor's character I mean). Him turning up was when it got fun I thought. Mind you I didn't make it to the end, I've got another forty minutes yet.

Also, I think McGregor is a dick in real life, but his character in the film is basically him, so it works.

Nah, McGregor's character is meant to be one of the big bads and he's fucking laughable. Not scary, not a threat, just a tone-deaf moron. I can enjoy an oafish goon in an action movie for sure, but this was not it. When he shut up and just had a scrap though it became enjoyable enough mind.

Like, Wolf of Wall Street was also 11 hours long, and nobody complained about that. It had the greatest musical number of all time.

Game of Dunes: Part 2 - 7/10
Visually and mechanically impeccable, perfectly setting the tone and atmosphere of a harsh desert world. The first time in a while I've been impressed by CGI, to the point my brain wasn't pointing it out. I just accepted what I was seeing.
The performances were solid, but as I recall there was only a single instance of humour in Part 2 (the guitar song) whereas I enjoyed the slightly lighter tone of Part 1.
That said, I'm just not feeling the overall story. I've not read the books, or clued up on the lore, but to a filthy casual like myself, there's no getting around the fact the story is convoluted and unnecessarily difficult to follow, plus it dragged in parts.
Don't even get me started on the Looney Tunes mechanics of worm riding and ridiculous desert walking.

I mean, it's mostly serious business. It's a serious movie! But Javier Bardem is very funny in the second one.

Think the only humour in the first part was from Duncan Idaho, Stilgar was funny in the second but it was clearly veering into Life of Brian territory at times, whether that was deliberate or not.

I can't imagine the Life of Brian bit was an accident.

Watched Part 1 again a few weeks back and not sure I can recall a joke in that one either. It's definitely srz bznz. There were no jokes in Part 1 per se, just the odd bit of light-hearted banter... "I am smiling". In Part 2, I just felt the need for a very light sprinkling of comic relief, as a respite from all the conflict, and to make the characters a little more relatable.

The Flight of Dragons (1982) **** Remember this very fondly from childhood and was pleased to say that it holds up very well. The production qualities aren't tremendous as it was made for TV back in the day (including fade-outs to ad breaks) but the overall design of the world and characters is good, and the voice acting is tremendous in places, especially James Earl Jones as the villain. It treats its subject and theme with utmost seriousness, and I do remember finding it full-on as a small child; indeed, it has quite a bit of death and violence for a cartoon aimed at nippers. If you come to it with an appreciation of how and when it was made, I think it's got a lot to recommend.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024) **** Basically just a hangout movie with some likeable and funny characters. Despite the heroes being pursued across America there's very little sense of threat, and to be honest it does have a "minor Coen" vibe to the whole thing (as in, it's about as good as one of their mid-tier films, I'm not saying Ethan's the "minor Coen" or anything like that). The dialogue is sparky, the central couple are hilarious and adorable, and it has delightful veins of both weirdness and horniness. However, the looseness, the strangeness, and the archness of it all could be divisive; I loved it, but I can see why some people hate it.
