THE BEEKEEPER
This could have genuinely worked if it was a neon Cyberpunk movie and everyone was a robot and/or bees.
There are some gems in the bad guy roster especially the South African guy.
"He's a Beekeeper Beekeeper?" out of 10. A eight six if you have had a few and start imagining the scenario above.

Monolith - you know one of those paranormal podcasts that’s actually a serialised drama? Someone made a movie of that. A podcaster starts a podcast about mysterious black bricks that show up at people’s houses and cause them to freak out and freaks her out in turn. Pretty good, all in all. The solitary actress is good and the story is compelling. I just wish it would have picked a lane as it straddled the line between ’is it aliens or a nervous breakdown’ far too much, giving evidence for both which is quite unsatisfactory in the end . 7/10

Dune Part 2
Well it was good. Not as good as the first one though. Some of the subplots didn't really go anywhere, or were resolved in seemingly rushed ways. Then again, the old movie was the same. So maybe it's just how the book was in the first place.
7/10
Anyway, if they make a third one to conclude Paul's story, I'm up for it.

I lived in Japan for 3 1/2 years and managed to avoid ever having to use one of their traditional toilets. They have to put instructions in the western-style ones explaining that you shouldn't use it as a squat toilet by balancing on the rim.

Squat toilets are fine once you get used to them. Though there's extra danger of missing, I like to think of it as extra thrill.

It was the tiny deep baths that got me, stayed in a ryokan with this tiny pink bath so small you needed to hug your knees like you've been sexually assaulted. I don't ever want the sensation of my heels touching my ballbag ever again.

Damsel (2024) - 50/100 - A Netflix Original that was entertaining enough to not get switched off, but really wasn't very good at all. Some of the design is great, the dragon looks good as does her fire, and it's framed and shot quite well - there were clearly some competent people working on it. Unfortunately the writers produced a lazy script, with clunky dialogue made worse by Millie Bobby Brown's delivery. She just has no range at all and I'm surprised she's been given the lead in the Russo's next project (though it is straight to Netflix as well).

Not taking the trousers off is part of the thrill!
Anyway
The Boxer From Shantung
This was the last of the Mubi Shaw Brothers offerings that I had not yet seen. It's a gangster story about gangs in Shanghai, and the corrupting influence of money and power on a young martial artist go-getter. It's basically Scarface with martial arts.
The final battle scene is bloody amazing, you should watch it for that alone.
8/10

I don't ever want the sensation of my heels touching my ballbag ever again. They're actually quite good for being boiled in.
Unfortunately they're not that good for vegging out and reading a book whilst listening to music with romantic candles and galaxy chocolate.

It's pretty well done and huge in scale, with some nice individual moments... but it does go on a bit. And a bit more.

I have seen it twice and enjoyed it more the second time. Well, the big one is that they really hyped up the rival Harkonnen guy, then he dies after contributing almost nothing to the story. I'm also not sure about the emperor suddenly deciding to travel to Arrakis just to get captured. And if those Bene Gesserit women had their own plans, we didn't see what they should have been.

Argylle - 5/10
Even cheesier than Jaws, with some really fucking awful CGI in places. I almost wish I'd just watched Madame Web instead now...

The Flash (Sky Cinema)
I think this might actually be one of their worst ones? Some terrible CGI, especially in the finale and an even more irritating version of The Flash coupled with some annoying humour, substandard story with unsatisfying resolution... I thought it was bad all the way through. The only thing that didn't suck was Keaton but nostalgia alone can't redeem this disaster.

Harry Potter 7 (Deathly Hullos Part One) (Peacock)
Eldest insisted on watching this, and I gave in despite it being very long.
On the one hand, it does a pretty great job of making everything get darker and more hopeless as the movie progresses. With things seeming more and more hopeless for our less and less plucky trio, and with all the things like the endless lists of disappeared etc..
On the other hand, it's nearly 3 hours of failure and depressing hopelessness, with almost no progress made. It's a long movie and it feels even longer than it is, feels waay longer than something like a LotR movie.
It's also hugely convoluted and hard to follow, taking JKR's habit of randomly introducing some random person and deus-ex-machina device at the end of each book, and making it into a string of about 20 people who lead to other people you've never heard of who lead to other people you've never heard of who lead to other people etc.. It took a fair bit of concentration to follow it, and I've seen it before and read the books. The brat was totally lost at points and had to keep asking 'so who's that they're talking about?'.
It's had to say it's bad, as it clearly achieves what it set out to do, and the performances are good. But what it set out to do isn't very fun.
iirc part 2 is a lot more fun. *crosses fingers*

I got half way through it recently and just gave up. Felt like putting requiem for a dream on instead to cheer myself up! It's pretty fucking depressing for a kid's film!
I feel like I've made it this far so I should probably finish them.

I think I last watched Goblet of Fire before I went in and watched deathly hallows part 2. I didn't feel like I missed anything in between and I still have no desire to watch the rest of them.

In the context of the overall story, narrative logic and general relevance Goblet of Fire is probably the worst of the post Columbus films. I choose to view it as a standalone spin-off called “Brendan Gleeson thoroughly enjoying himself for two hours”, makes it a much more fun watch.

Here goes…..
On deadly ground - 4/10
Steve seagal writes, directs and stars in his die hard/dances with wolves cross over. It’s mostly watchable and obviously has a massive budget, but yeah this is as terrible as it sounds. I didn’t realise seagal was already to old in 1994. Even his hand karate is shite. Micheal Caine hams it up too, but this is 1990s Micheal Caine and he is awful. Worth a watch for some good cameos but yeah you can see the fall of seagal happening on screen.
Beverly Hills cop 2 - 7/10
It’s a bad movie made better by the core cast returning. A rerun of the first but with Bridget Neilson shoe horned in (who is terrible). The main cast are great though so it still gets a 7.
The specialist - 6/10
Should be a 5 but James woods is chewing up the scenery throughout. He’s amazing in this. Sharon stone and sly have the longest worst sex scene ever and the film has a weird goodfellas/casino music score that’s completely at odds with the crap 90s action movie it wants to be. A weird one for sure but still worth a watch.
