Had no idea this was coming out, but the timing is perfect considering the recent discussion about it on this thread... Out in cinemas 17 May if it's of interest. www.chasingamydoc.com/

In Time - 1/5 (Disney+)
One of the most laughably ludicrous and contrived concepts for a script ever. What if, get this, time actually WAS money?! And also what if everyone was genetically engineered to stop ageing at 25 with a 1 year lifespan that you could transfer from one person to another really easily despite it being literally the most valuable resource in human history.
I don't think any actor could have salvaged much from this, but Justin Timberlake somehow manages to make the material much worse.
Filmed entirely in a storm drain and surrounding area.
A must watch.
Enys Men - 3.5/5 (Blu-ray)
Atmospheric Cornish folk time-loop horror about a scientist on a remote island studying a patch of strange flowers. I loved Bait by the same director but this feels more slight whilst watching, but has stuck with me and I've not stopped thinking about it since. I am definitely ok with this new wave of folk horror.

Another article on the perennial topic of whether films are too long / getting longer. www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-68379592I love how every one of these articles has different statistics that prove that they are/aren't getting longer. Something I thought of when someone (Kal?) posted some pretty thorough stats a while back is that the massive blockbusters have a bigger chunk of the theatre audience now. Seems entirely possible that the average person's theatre going experience has become longer even if a straight comparison between the top 10 or top 100 doesn't show a huge difference, because of the movies people actually get out of the house for.

That probably scans. The the last two movies I saw at the cinema were Dune 2 (near 3 hours) and Oppenheimer (dead on 3 hours).

Road House (the 1989 one)
Thought I'd watch it again before the new one comes out.
The famous bits remain great, but overall it's... kind of boring? I like the build-up to Dalton being this ultimate bouncer, but once the action kicks off it feels like a bit of a letdown to me. You could probably cut 20 minutes and it would be a better movie imo.
Anyway, it's not bad or anything. I just had a distinct memory as a kid of this forbidden movie on the VHS rental shelves, and the reality of it is slightly disappointing.

Also, Sam Elliott looks so fucking young! And he's got exactly the same voice as when he's an old man, so it's a bit weird seeing him in this. Like the face and voice don't match.

There’s those, Mission Impossible, Top Gun and more. No issue with length but at 3 hours an intermission would be nice.

I do like a good intermission. EVen the LOTR extended editions were spread across two dvds to let you get up and toilet.
Plus more cinemas are serving beer these days. An intermission is as much a sign of mercy as anything.

The irony of Scorsese getting grumpy that some cinemas out an intermission in his 3 1/2 hours film as well. There’s no way an 80 year old + can last that long without a break.

Contact - Probably my favourite of the A tier Zemeckis movie. I just think its neat and I appreciate the themes more and more as I get older, so that's nice.

He's not young, it's just that you've aged past him
I have recently started to notice this thing when watching older movies that the characters that I remember being old suddenly look much younger.
Like, I remember Richard Gere being an old guy in Pretty Woman, but now he looks like a young whippersnapper.
PS/ I'd love to have intermissions back!

Dune (2021) - 4K UHD, Samsung 65" S90C, 5.1.2, Sunday evening - 90/100
Wonderfully made sci-fi for adults, with top tier sound and visual design, great acting and despite it's long runtime great pacing
Dune 2 (2023) - 70mm, PictureHouse Central, middle seats middle row, yesterday - 80/100
Longer runtime but with poorer pacing make this a slight disappointment relative to the first. I found the final act rushed, certain character arcs didn't feel earned and it lacked a bit of explanation (I don't need things spelling out, but it felt there was essential story missing). It still looked and sounded incredible, and I thought the cast were generally excellent. Perhaps a second viewing will up the score, or maybe the 3rd instalment (assuming it gets the go ahead) will help explain some of the motivations.

He's not young, it's just that you've aged past him I don't think it's that necessarily. It's more that my image of Sam Elliott is "old Southern gentleman, probably a cowboy or cowboy-adjacent", which he's had for me since the first thing I remember seeing him in (Big Lebowski). Which was only 10 years on from Road House, by the way! But anyway, certain actors get locked into my head when I see them first, like that's what they're supposed to be. And when I revisit performances before that it's often a bit weird, like they're in a cocoon, growing to be the actor I know them as. The dude in Road House feels like a random guy that just happens to have Sam Elliott's voice.

Tombstone was only a few years after roadhouse and he'd already morphed into the wizened old cowboy we know and love by then.

The Fly (1958 iirc).
I'm visiting family at the moment so evenings sometimes feature my mum's DVD collection. This was last night's choice.
I've seen it before, but not in probably about twenty years or more. It's aged very well I'd say, particularly compared to some horror/sci-fi of the decade, in that it doesn't feel *too* cheesy or farcical. It's definitely very silly in places by modern standards (- the wife and kid not really being all that phased by the mercy killing of their husband/dad, for example -), but I can imagine at the time its impact on the audience would have been pretty effective.
It does leave you with lots of questions though, about how he has a fly head with his human brain still, and whether the fly still has the fly brain in the human head, and if so, how is he saying HELP MEEEE at the end.
I think the answer is, back then it didn't matter and it's best not to think too much.

Another factor to consider is that being in the streaming era, we’re also in the marathon era. Folks tend to binge a whole season of a show in one go, so while films are certainly getting longer, audiences are becoming more accustomed to being sat down in one place, eyes focused on the screen. As someone who has trouble watching more than one of two episodes of a show at a time, I really miss 90-120 minute films.

Terminal velocity - 7/10 Another one I hadn’t seen. Apparently this got panned by critics when It released, I’ve no idea why as it’s a solid action movie with some amazing set pieces (the car off the plane at the end is top tier). It’s also one the few old action movies I’ve seen with a very strong female character, Nastassja Kinski is basically the lead actor in this, which is good as Charlie Sheen seems to think he’s still in a hot shots movie. It’s also has James Gandolfini as the bad guy and he’s great too. Not as good as Drop Zone, but still an enjoyable romp. I got my first erection when watching this movie.

It was in the sitting room, with my family present. I quickly covered my shame with a nearby cushion.
The cushion was green.
And now look at me. On top of the world

Poor Things - Disney+ - Where do I start? The music is eerie as fuck, which works well for the disturbing atmosphere. Some of the camera shots are brilliant, others are jarring. They feel out of place, as if they are mimicking CCTV cameras. I am not sure if it is intentional or not, but it doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t add to the atmosphere, but dragged me out of it. The cast are stellar, though Mark Ruffalo should have made up which mind he was going for. But the story, it is fucking wrong. Woman finds sexual liberation and her own place by being exploited by misogyny and rising from property to her own woman; feels uncomfortable. I would have to say, that was my take, maybe I am being too aware. It is an uncomfortable film, and I think that was the intent. But is it any good? In my opinion no.
4/10
Aqua Man 2 - One of those we stopped showing it, but we’re chancing some of you might want to see it again cinema showings - Where do I start? The music features so great action movie tracks, born to be free and spirit in the sky. They kind of work, once you realise that you cannot use music to set a scene or film where Jason Mamoa is in. There is a fuck tonne of CGI, SFX and I usually like this stuff. Some of it looks cool, but makes no sense. The rest, I see where some of you are coming from. It generally looks Alien, and not the good, first film Alien. The cast are wasted, there are plenty of good cast members, not including Jason. But the story? What the fuck? Apparently all that climate change was down to a megalomaniac and an orphan conspiring to do what exactly? And fuck the Atlanteans, after ousting his brother from power, Aquaman needs him. Only we find out Atlantean justice is to lock up prisoners in a ritual torture dungeon in the desert. Then 5hey team up, some pointless shit, then they attack the prison guards of megalomaniac, I think, at this point I wanted a pee, and wasn’t waiting until the end. It was utter fucking dog shit. I really wanted the DCU to turn out a great film, but all we got was Wonder Woman as a good film. 0/10

The Holdovers (PeacockTV, with VPN). 8/10. Finally got around to watching this and it was every bit as good as I'd hoped. Paul Giamatti was excellent as ever, but I thought Da'Vine Joy Randolph stole the show. It's got a great script and a lovely tone to it with lots of learning from the main 2 characters. Highly recommended.

Poor Things - I think this is just a sex comedy? Like I don’t think it’s particularly profound and maybe isn’t trying to be, it’s just a Taste The Difference ‘Confessions Of A Hideous Science Experiment’.
And as that, it worked for me. It’s pretty funny, it’s absolutely gorgeous, the costumes are amazing and the acting is tremendous (other than Willem Dafoes wandering German/Scottish accent).
I can see how it would get on people’s tits if you weren’t in the mood for it. It could feel self indulgently odd, like a Tim Burton movie with bush, but I thought it was pretty cool.

Poor Things 8/10 (Disney+) Beautifully acted and shot , but the story and the fisheye lens gave me the ick. It’s a dark, dark tale and I went in feeling a bit uncomfortable and felt worse during it. I can appreciate the performances, but it’s safe to say I won’t be revisiting this. Dougs -glad you enjoyed the Holdiovers. I hope there’s some recognition for it at the Oscars tomorrow. It’s a great big hug of a film
