You know you typed '8' there, right? Yes. But then again, I enjoyed every minute of it. No apologies coming from me. I've found most of this years blockbusters to be plopbusters. I'd take The Tomorrow War over Fast 9, Black Widow, Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat, Quite Place 2 etc. Not seen Free Guy or The Suicide Squad yet and it looks as though there's a few decent looking cinema releases coming soon. I really hope the quality improves.

Ready or Not - 9/10Was on D+. Been meaning to watch it for a while and liked it a lot. It’s a concept that’s been done before countless times but I liked this version. Doesn’t mess about, the cast all work well together, it’s not overly gruesome and it’s quite funny in places. Does what it says on the tin, really, and was executed well. The Suicide Squad - 6.5/10Was alright but nothing special. Was expecting more. The first half is the funniest (and even then it’s not that funny), and I didn’t think the team worked that well. I think it basically suffers from the usual DC issues - there are no likeable characters and I don’t really care what happens to them, there’s no charm to it, and it’s too long. I’m curious if the Flash movie will actually be able to reboot the DCU to any meaningful degree, and it sort of feels like we have to get another shitty movie (The Flash) in order to do it in the first place, just to get an in-universe reason. It’d be quicker and easier to just start again without that. I loved ready or not, it was absolutely perfect at what it wanted to do. I'm surprised it was not bigger to be honest, it seems to have been completely forgotten about

Fair enough. It was better than;
Shadow In The Cloud: What if that one episode from the twilight zone that everyone knows but as a cheap stage play? Max Landis really is on a hot streak of shite. Also, why is Drazic off Heartbreak High suddenly in everything? 4/10
Rebuild of Evangelion 1 Rebuild of Evangelion 2 Rebuild of Evangelion 3 Rebuild of Evangelion 3+1 (naturally):
So, yeah, all of them dropped onto Amazon and they are really good. Properly what you used to think Anime was, crazy action, weird plot and incomprehensible story telling not just the interminable '17 year old High School student but a wizard/martial artist/exorcist/assassin/mental patient' slurry we get now.
Its big, its bold, its crazy its annoying, it tells a much better yet slightly worse story than the series (which you kind of need to see as it just drops terms completely unexplained like it assumes you already know what they are despite it supposedly being standalone) and it finally sticks the landing at the third attempt.
If nothing else, the advance of CG and whatnot mean everything looks absolutely spectacular. The sense of scale you get when the EVAs are on the move is incredible. With most things, when two giant things fight, it just ends up looking like two humans. These things look big and do absolutely comical amounts of collateral damage. At one point they go on a mission to save Paris and completely trash it during a fight.
Collectively, I think this up there with the series. Certainly the final chapter is far superior and there is much less Shinji being a fanny.
8/10 Overall (Part 3 is probably a 6. It spins its wheels a bit and is actually a bit boring)

Fear Street 1994
It's ok, title is mostly inaccurate though. There is no fear, it's not set on a street and given some of the songs they play even 1994 is a bit iffy. I'm not entirely sure who the target audience is, but I'm fairly certain I'm not it.
Hopefully part two will have something vaguely scary in it.

Heh, that took up most of my mental bandwidth, too. It goes so heavy on the THIS IS A SONG FROM THE 90s, autofiring tunes in every five seconds that I spent most of the movie wondering if that particular song was actually from 1994

I watched Boss Level last night. Not sure how much of it was due to being in a diarrhea and sickness fevered haze but I quite enjoyed it. Better than that shit with Harry Potter in anyway. Would have been better if the lead had the slightest bit of charisma or likability though.

It took me a couple of weeks and some effort, but I made it through the three Fear Street films just to see if they improved, really.
It wasn't until the final film that I realised why they felt like extended Goosebumps episodes: they're based on a series of books by R.L. Stine. So it's Goosebumps for the 'young adult' crowd, basically.
I'd say the first is the weakest of the trilogy, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to anyone. I found them all rather bland.

Reminiscence - can’t work out if it was shit or if I kind of liked it. Going for the former though, it was very much a “here’s a wild concept” with a half baked plot thrown in that really didn’t need either the memory gimmick or the weird Waterworld subplot that goes absolutely nowhere and adds absolutely nothing.

Synchronic - 7/10 Started off way too slow but when it got going it was really good. It sets out as a new drug on the streets killing people story and then goes completely leftfield.
I do like the directors too, Spring, resolution and the Endless were all great.

F9 - 2/10.
Absolutely shit. They go into space in a fucking car with scuba gear on! The 2 points go to Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Nathalie Emmaunuel.

I watched Evangelion 3 without having seen any episodes or the previous films.
Unsurprisingly I had no idea what was going on 98% of the time.

Reminiscence
I'm half an hour in and fuck me this is dull. The premise is okay, even if it's just a mishmash of Strange Days and Blade Runner, but it's sooooo dull. It wants to be a classy SF noir but everyone is a walking one-note cliche with line-readings to match.
Apparently this has been a huge flop, I can see why.

Evolution
I remember this being silly fun, and that remains the case which is just what I needed this evening. It's far from sophisticated humour, and to be fair, not that many laugh out loud moments. But it's a decent cast and they maintain the mild amusement throughout.

P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang (1982)
British comedy about a boy who dreams about kissing a girl in his class.
There is a fluffy innocence about the film that makes it likeable though not really funny. I can see why it has bit of a cult status. Was also shown on the second night of the Channel4 launch apparently.
7/10
Clockwise (1986)
John Cleese is a punctual headmaster who ends up late for a conference.
Cue all manner of mishaps as he tries to get there on time. It's billed as a comedy but raised only a smile a couple of times. I'm not sure if its one of those films that was funny at the time but dated now.

Jungle Cruise
Took the kids to the cinema because my wife was having her shrieking friends over for drinks.
Wasn’t expecting much but actually had a great time watching it. It’s pretty lightweight, but funny throughout, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and has good action scenes. Blunt and the Rock play off well against each other.
It’s pretty much like Pirates of the Caribbean in style/tone, but funnier.
Any way as a film aimed squarely at kids and based on a Disney theme park ride, 8/10

The following night, the wife went to bed early so I watched a film I knew she would hate. Sunshine.
Haven’t watched for 15 years but my thoughts on it haven’t changed. The first two thirds are amazing and it sets things up so well.
Bad decisions and human error cause a cascade of accidents which mean the crew can never make it home, and not all of them will survive to complete their mission. This creates some excellent tension and moral dilemmas. It’s all got a very bleak tone, with a beautiful soundtrack, and smart interesting characters.. It’s all perfect. Maybe my favourite sci-fi film ever.
Then the third act happens and it all goes to shit. Turns into a B-grade thriller. It manages to salvage things a little bit in the final scene.
First two thirds of the movie are 10/10 Last third 5/10 Last scene 8/10

Was very surprised at how entertaining is was. Basically raiders of the lost ark mixed with pirates of the Caribbean.

If it had a couple of blimps in it too I wouldn't have been surprised to find out that Rodimus wrote the screenplay. The drowned city/nocturnal living stuff was mildly interesting, but that's about all it had going for it and it really had no bearing on the actual plot.

Clockwise- now that is a blast from the past
I watched that as an 11 year old with my brother and one of our friends at the cinema. We naively assumed it would be like Monty Python or even Fawlty Towers, when in fact it was total dogshit
Still remember our confused faces to this day but we got through it

@ clemfandango
Yeah, it was better than it had any right to be. Haven’t had so much watching a movie since the new Jumanji.
Its definitely a blend of other films like Indiana Jones, African Queen, PotC, the Mummy and maybe even a bit of Romancing the Stone.
There aren’t many adventure movies released like this anymore

Clockwise was rubbish.
A fish called Wanda was a bit meh as well.
Tbh I never understood Cleese's success. He plays the same person in everything: a loud arrogant privelidged Englishman who thinks he's better than everybody else. The amount of mileage he gets from that is astounding.
Definitely my least favourite Python.

Fish Called Wanda was primarily funny because of Kevin Kline, who is still hilarious in it. Michael Palin's stuttering Ken may not be very PC these days but he did a lot of the other heavy comedy lifting.
The rest of the film is quite dull and very 80s, but it's worth it for Kline.
BENITO MUSSOLINI.

Butterfly on a Wheel
Tight thriller, with a decent cast and engaging story. The reveal was a bit more mundane than I'd hoped, and there's a few false endings, but not enough to spoil it.
7/10

Horror triple.
Saw/Spiral: Absolutely awful. Has some big names in Samuel L Jackson, Chris Rock, that lad from Handmaids tale. They are all bad. Boring, nothing happens, awful 'twist'. Not even one for people who like seeing people splattered. 3/10
31: One of those Rob Zombie films, with the cast from all his movies. Thought House of corpses and Devils Rejects were pretty shit, but actually had a good time with this one. Campy, silly and gory. 6.5/10
Smiley Face Killers: Written by Brett Easton Ellis, and like any of 'his' movies that weren't written in book form first, it is shit. A boy who is on some medication gets whined at all movie by his mates for not taking them. Gets some strange texts, eventually something happens. Not good. 2/10
