In odd situation and hope someone here can give serious advice. Next door used to have tenants that smoked weed all the time. They were also a bit mental. They trashed their flat and apparently the landlord had to repaint all the walls and wash the carpet as the smell had soaked in. We used to get the weed stink all from the old tenants. Recently I've been getting smoke/sickly sweet/acrid smells for hours each night. It's unpleasant. The new tenants have some kind of humidifer that they say makes the smell come out of the walls and I'm wondering if that's causing the new smell. Any idea what my options are here? I'll speak to the tenants, but my concern is the landlord who is unpleasant and never takes responsibility for anything. Is there any angle for me to say the smell will damage my home or be a health risk to me? When it's acrid I can feel it affecting my throat. If I need to put pressure on the landlord what are my options?
EDIT - The landlord isn't my landlord. This is happening in the house next door to me.

Do you own your flat or rent? If rent, is it your landlord that is unpleasant?
In the meantime, check you local authority guidance on anti-social/nuisance neighbour behaviour.

That sounds sucky.
With any neighbour dispute (even a potential one) it's worth keeping notes of dates and times in case you do need to make a local authority or police report.
The dehumidifier story sounds pretty sus.

The dehumidifier story sounds pretty sus. Definitely. There's surely no way that would be causing an acrid stench

If ever I get elected to government, I’ll make it law that Buy-to-Let landlords have to suffer the same misery that their tenants inflict on neighbours.

If there's a tonne of embedded weed stench in the walls, it's not unreasonable that a dehumidifier would take months to draw all of that out. I'm not sure you would be able to smell it that vividly nextdoor though.
I ran a dehumidifier in a damp old property where the old lady who had lived there before had basically smoked herself to death and tar-stenched crap was coming out of the walls for months.

Thanks for the replies all. I live in a house next door to the stinky one. I live in my own place, so no landlord for me. Also I'm in London.
The new tenants are keen gardeners and have lots of plants inside their flat (it looks like a jungle from their front window), so I think they are using a *humidifier* to keep the plants healthy.
The new tenants are pleasant and spoke to me after I dropped a note round to all three flats in the building. They do smoke cigarettes, but I see them smoking outdoors.
THey / other tenants might be smoking weed or vaping, but I think there's a real chance it *is* the humidifer pulling the stink out of the walls and that's what makes this tricky.
I've gone outside at 4:30am (the smell still... smellable) and all the lights have been out in the house, front and back.
If they were clearly smoking weed, the landlord would have to do something about it. But if they aren't and this is just happening 'cos it's in the walls, that's where I'm not sure what my options will be. I can ask them to turn the humidifier off, but they may not be obliged to.
Thanks for the good suggestions, I'll look into the council and environmental health etc.

Is this acrid smell a burning smell? A random burning smell in our old house turned out to be dodgy wiring under the floorboards that was 100% about to start a fire.
I think if it was the former weed smokers you'd still be able to identify the stale weed/tobacco smell IMO.

I don't think it's a weed farm, the tenant I spoke to is in training to be an architect. Also, she spoke to me about planting flowers in her garden and wanted to make sure I didn't mind if some of the seeds blew over into my side. Unfortunately I know that people can seem friendly and then be horrible, but she seemed genuine.

It's a sweet tobacco-y smell. Almost like someone vaping. The acridiity (?) of it reminded me a bit when the previous lot were smoking weed.

How old is the building? While the humidifier on their side may well be drawing the smell out of the wall, it seems unlikely to be forcing it through the wall... I'd say it's more likely that you have shitty mortar in the party wall and the smell is coming through where the wall is not covered by plaster i.e. under the floorboards or in the ceiling void. Very common in Victorian properties, but can occur in any age building really - the Victorians used to employ their best brickies for the front of the house and leave the party walls to just general labourers, so the mortar is often pretty patchy. I used to get cooking smells coming in from the neighbours, but a couple of years ago I lifted the floorboards and repointed all the brickwork in the voids - haven't smelt anything since then! As a bonus it also cut the noise noticeably as well :-) Might be worth lifting a board near the wall and having a look at the brickwork, in mine there were gaps were you could literally just stick your finger in, no mortar at all.

Just let them be. Narc.

I learned a lot from that, thanks chap. The houses are Victorian. The one I'm in hasn't been touched in 40 years or so and I'm not sure how comprehensive the work was in the first place. It's likely there are gaps in the mortar. I mean, I can smell another flat next door cooking garlic.
THe one with the tenants was completely gutted and rebuilt about a decade ago, but it was done poorly. I know for a fact that sound transmission is worse than it used to be.
Unfortunately I'm no able to lift the floorboards or have any work done for the forseeable, so I'll have to see what happens with the tenants and landlord. In the meantime I'm using a big air purifier in the room and that seemed to help last night.
The room I'm in is tiny and the air purifier far too powerful for it - fingers crossed it will give me some peace while I sort this out.

My neighbour - who’s been a creepy, entitled cunt since we moved in about four years ago - called me from his side of the fence to tell me that my children were too noisy and that he’d like us to keep them more quiet when they’re in the garden.
We live in a terrace. My kids are three and six. They’re in the garden for about four hours total each week and at the weekends only.
How about you fuck yourself you snide cunt? If you want silence, don’t live in a terraced house. Prick.
