Green Lung were pretty good last night. I've most one-and-done their records but enjoyed them. Very tight live performance, good stage presence from the vocalist.

Also seeing Urne \o/
Support acts sound decent too. Mountain Caller are an instrumental doom / prog, and Tribe of Ghosts are industrial metal. They sound like they'll compliment Urne well, whilst also being distinct.
It's much more interesting when support acts offer something different to the headliners.

Listening to lots of NWOBHM at the minute as I’m reading Denim & Leather an oral history of the movement.
Its very good. No connective writing, just 500 pages of structured quotes and anecdotes. Most of it is interesting, a lot is very funny, some of it is obviously self-aggrandisingly untrue (Paul Di’Anno) and there’s a slightly hint of Creme Brule ‘its a shit business’.
Its a shame the current Maiden line-up thought they were too good to contribute when everyone else (including Def Leppard and Halford) were game.
Big recommend if you like mad stories of beer fuelled japes and homemade pyro from hairy young men in East End pubs and Northern working mens clubs.

Looking forward to seeing them on Sunday in Camden, hearing good things about their live shows. They've sold out the electric ballroom (1500 cap) which is damn good going! The first album didn't really click with me but Black Harvest was great and the new one is really good too although it's very reliant on catchy sing alongs... It's Wytch Hazel supporting who I heard had some kind of Christian rock thing going on and fully expected to be shit (especially considering other tour dates had the likes of Boss Keloid and Inhuman Nature) but turns out they're belting NWOBHM style. Should be a fun way to spend a Sunday evening!

Sepultura have announced that to celebrate their 40th anniversary they’re going to split up.
I know lots of people think the band died in 96 when Max left but the Derrick era produced some great albums of songs of its own. I’d argue that they had a far more consistent and better output than Max has over the last 20 years. But neither could compete when what they’d done together was all time classic after all time classic after all time classic. Easily one of my favourite metal bands, probably one of my favourite bands of any genre.

Sepultura we're the band that got me into metal. Sad to hear they're splitting.

Not the biggest fan of the new Vulture Industries album unfortunately. It seems tame and uninspired for the most part, though the reviews are singing its praises.

According to Spotify, Borknagar's True North was my most played album of 2023. I think I've already identified what 2024's is going to be.

True North was an exceptional album, hoping the new one follows suit.

Celestial was the second christmas album Rob Halford has done, and honestly it's pretty great.

More Death/Funeral Doom.
This one is just slightly unusual for them, but a purely instrumental, somewhat more languid and dreamy version of what they were doing around this time, is quite appealing.

Been enjoying this
Between this, and Gel, and Pest Control, and Zulu, I've been listening to more hardcore and crossover stuff. Just a shame I find hardcore crowds often annoying. Moshing or circle pits I can understand but when people start spin kicking and flailing around it's just beyond my personal understanding.
And that's fine, it does not have to be about me, but it does put me off bothering to see them. (Though am seeing Pest Control, they're quite thrashy so hoping they'll be at least a few crowd members from that side of things there).

This popped up today and I’ve forgotten how absolutely righteous Dio and Iommi were. If you’ve got to go out its a mighty way to do it

Huge news - Wise Blood Records are making their 2023 catalogue free on bandcamp.
VHS, Graveripper, Faster than the Devil, Black Knife and Krigsgrav are amongst some of my favourites of this year, highly recommend.
And they're free. FREE. they're so good I'm not even bummed I paid for most of these already.

Enjoying all the end of year lists... Banger TV as usual with a generally great roundup (albeit a few obvious omissions - maybe Panopticon came too late in the year). Some kind soul made a playlist with everything on which I've currently got on shuffle.
New discoveries I've picked up from the lists are Tanith and Moonlight Sorcery

I can’t think of another thread to put this in, and last time they were discussed they were met with a wave of apathy and the usual criticism, but I received James Hetfield of Metallica’s coffee table book ‘Messengers’ for Xmas this year.
He runs through many of his notable guitars from the early days to the start of his custom built ESP stuff and all the vintage Gibson stuff too. It’s beautifully photographed and he has actually put some decent effort into putting anecdotes and what each guitar meant to him/was used for. There’s also snippets from guitar techs and others too.
It’s really nice. Hope Kork does one.

Got Paradise Lost's 'Icon 30' for Chrimbo. It feels a little weird that it's 30 years old to me, but after getting into them around the time of 'Shades of God' after hearing 'As I Die' on Raw Power, it was a pretty big album for me.
I've not listened to the original recently so it's been really nice hearing this re-recording and the songs still hold up to these ears. It doesn't sound that removed from the original though. I wish they'd maybe done more to reimagine it or that it included something more celebratory for the anniversary (like another disc with a live rendition perhaps) as it feels a bit bare bones.

BeetrootBertie I did mention earlier in December that I was about to see PL live for their ICON 30 tour here in Greece, but I never reported the outcome itself. They were FANTASTIC! The band was in great shape, Holmes was in his best form, the songs felt fresh and certainly not 30 y.o. and I felt like watching them for the first time in my early 20's. Truly exceptional! I'm just sorry I missed purchasing the vinyl...

I don't like anything else from Tiamat, but Wildhoney is easily in contention for a top 20 album for me. Ask me at the right time it could even be top 10.

I totally agree! While I got most of their albums and enjoy them to various degrees, Wildhoney was a revelation!

I do think this is pretty cool, though I do find it weird that the new vocalist is basically cosplaying as a cyborg zombie version of the deceased Wayne Static.
