I thought the lineup looked pretty decent. It might have be too ambitious and it was always a bit shaky, with a couple of rescheduled dates. It does sometimes feel like any festival of that size is going to struggle, because everyone expects it to fail, so nobody buys tickets. Local metal promoter Byker Grave has stepped up to book replacements for as many bands as possible. Mainly the underground acts lower on the bill but they just announced that they’ve been able to salvage a show for Green Lung! Happy 4/20 everyone!

Revisited some of the Symphonic (and adjacent) Black Metal stuff I consumed as a teenager. Dimmu, Satyricon, Gehenna, Emperor, Covenant. Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant) is, well, Dimmu Borgir. They're good at what they're doing, found it fairly listenable, but ultimately forgettable. They did get 15-yo. me into BM though--if I should thank them for that is a topic for another day.
Covenant (In Times Before The Light), it was ok, but I'm not a fan of the tinny fantasy-BM sound--and never have been.
Satyricon (until Nemesis Divina) is odd, I used to be a big fan when I was 15-17, but... it kind of leaves me cold. It feels a little mechanical, a little... sterile? It doesn't seem to feel as energetic as most of the other stuff, like something's missing and I can't put my finger on it. Just me?
Emperor still slaps, putting everyone else in their place. Epic. Including Equilibrium, but not Prometheus which is where they lost me.
Gehenna (Malice) was a bit of a surprise, didn't expect to enjoy it as much again as I did. I like every single song here, great album. Ad Arma Ad Arma is really interesting, a banging nuclear apocalypse track that foreshadows the change in style on their next album, Adimiron Black. I'll just link the title track.

Ex-Every Time I Die members and The Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato getting together sounds about as good as I expected, which is to say very.

Its wild that Isahn was basically a child when he wrote In The Nightside Eclipse and its still arguably the pinnacle of the genre. At the opposite end of the speed-scale but still dark and epic Bell Witch’s new album is out today and its another single 80+ minute track. Haven’t had time to listen to it all yet but last time they did this with Mirror Reaper it became one of my all time favourite doom albums. bellwitch.bandcamp.com/album/futures-shadow-part-1-the-clandestine-gate

I'll need to check that new Bell Witch out.
Bandcamp is becoming a drain on my finances haha.

45 minutes in and I’d say so far its more ambient and less dark and doomy than Mirror Reaper. Although it is still both of those things.
Probably good timing that I started Elden Ring the week this came out. Mirror Reaper always felt like it would probably vibe well with a From game.

Just recently found out that the guy behind Paysage d'Hiver fronted another Ambient BM band, Darkspace. The relation is apparent, but it's less lo-fi and is, well, dark space-themed instead of the Tolkien stuff. Sweet!

Looks like this Metallica album has been their worst selling since the 80s. But such is the way for a legacy act. It’d almost be rarer for it to really shift heavy units.

I think they'll cope, somehow.

Its wild that Isahn was basically a child when he wrote In The Nightside Eclipse and its still arguably the pinnacle of the genre. Off to see them perform it in full next month. Already saw the same show at Bloodstock years ago, but couldn't resist. Plus they'll never come to NZ again.

This is also cool.
And of course it's mixed by Arthur Rizk. I mean, I tend to like the things he's produced and/or mixed, but c'mon, he seems to be everywhere!

Listening to Priest's Nostradamus again after a while. I still think it's their best album post-Painkiller.

Pretty sure the vocalist is Sarah from BangerTV! The band are awesome and BangerTV is the best goddamn Youtube channel in existence. In other new stuff, the Enforced album sounds like Slayer and Power Trip. Given those are two of the very finest of all time, it's a pretty good album... and they're great live too.

The Enforced album mixed by, yep, Arthur Rizk Century Media don't post shit on bandcamp, which is both frustrating and a saviour. If it was on bandcamp I'd get that Enforced album, but as it's not I'll save a few quid.

I appreciate there's definitely an audience for it, but I just don't get the hype around Sleep Tokens latest album. I'm not even a metal snob but I don't really hear anything that interests me. All songs end just super flat.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of hype but I'm just not that interested in Sleep Token.
I can hear that they have some talent but I find them kinda boring to be honest.

New Blackbraid song is decent. Not the most original black metal song, but I like the vibe.

Emperor last night. Was really good. Tour t-shirt design is a bit half-hearted though

Sounds like adding the bassist from High on Fire hasn’t reduced Mutoid Man’s goofiness any
