I basically like The Blackening, though it is far too long on many tracks, Locust is pretty decent. Bloodstone and Diamonds they tried to do more of the same but I just found it boring on my first listen and never went back. Burn My Eyes is basically Davidian and 10 other songs. The rest is a pass for me.
Speaking of bands with people who may be dicks in them, I got a notification about a new Spirit Adrift record and enjoyed the first 2 tracks before discovering the rest was just covers. Among them, a cover of Metallica's Escape of all things.

lets throw another youtube video into the pyre. Skyclad are great. or were. not sure what they're doing these days, but they had a very strong run of albums in the 1990s-2000s which were great. Folk metal (with a very punk edge to my tin ears). And *lots* of wordlpay and puns in the lyrics and song titles.
Just realised 1990-2000 is like, two decades ago now... I'll ignore that.

Parliament of Fools is a great, catchy song but struggled to get into anything else of theirs.

Agreed!!! Skyclad were great back in the day, Martin Walkyier's lyrics were excellent, full of irony and hidden meanings and every time I saw them play (they had quite a following here in Greece) they were very honest and down to earth... Spinning Jenny still gets me moving \m/

Back from arctangent yesterday, such a great festival.
Saw Dvne, Heriot, Caspian, Godflesh, Zeal and Ardor, Rivers of Nihil, Perturbator, Cult of Luna, Opeth, Oranssi Pazuzu, Bossk, the Armed... Absolutely stacked line up.
So much so that I had to miss Tuskar, Pupil Slicer, Alcest, Frontierer and Leprous... There was just too much great music.
Comedy highlight from when Godflesh were getting started, super dark and atmospheric when suddenly...
"Sorry guys, the laptop got knocked over... Let's start again"

Yeah I got back from that yesterday too. Fucking knackered. Hard going doing a festival in your mid 30s these days haha.
Band of the weekend were Oranissi Pazuzu (sp) for me. But the whole weekend was great. As you might expect for a festival for music nerds the sound was great. Best I think I come across at any festival. The drum sound for leprous was fucking insane.
Really liked Cryptic Shift. Alcest were great as usual. Binge (heron from Oceansize new band), Amenra, Opeth, elephant tree, conjurer, mono, aa Williams, and wheel amongst others. Cracking stuff.
It’s kind of nuts that Chelsea Wolfe, Bellwitch, Rolo Tomassi and enslaved were due to play too but had to pull out.
Only complaint was that Bossk clashed with Alcest which put me in a really difficult position haha. But I figured I’ve listened to spiritual instinct pretty much once a week for the last couple of years and it helped me through lockdown for sure, so that swung it.

I was 100% planning to see Alcest as they're one of my favourite bands I've seen Bossk (another favourite) so many times before. But I was nearby when they started playing and the damn riffs got me, I couldn't tear myself away. I can't possibly imagine how they can top that lineup next year. I'm closing on 40 but feel like a spring chicken today after the brutality that was Bloodstock in mid-30s temperature the previous week. Was feeling exhausted for a few days after that! ATG was very civilised in comparison

Ex Cradle of Filth guitarist Stuart Anstis has passed away. I know that band is a revolving door when it comes to members but Stuart was part of the band back when I listened to them all the time, so I’m quite sad about that.

Found out that an AI playing algorithmically generated death metal non-stop exists

Yeah, I’ve definitely heard humans doing worse than that. I tuned in for a bit that was almost Slipknot before some Portal style chaos.

If the energy is their from Omar and Cedric than it’ll be a banger. But yeah, will a tough one to top for sure.

Hertz Kankarok: Progressive/Death/Doom. One review is likening it to a combination of Ihsahn and Meshuggah.

I didn’t realise that most of SubRosa had formed a new band. Feels like it leans more into the goth side of their old sound than the doom part.

Sorry to keep dragging this into being the Machine Head thread but it's out today. I stayed up late to give it a good listen last night and am jamming it again now.
It's very good.
But...
The production is a mess. Love it or hate it but Catharsis was a nice sounding mix. Here everything is redlined, the drums are overpowering in particular. It's not quite Death Magnetic bad but it's a tiring listen and there's loads of nuances and details going on in the riffing it's hard to listen for.
I think this is a 9 on material but it has to have a point reduced for its sound. I thought we were moving away from the loudness wars finally.

I had a listen to a few tracks earlier. It is good but also quite generic sounding... It's heavy and fast and all that, and some catchy choruses. But still doesn't have the killer riffs from that first album.
I think people that loved the Blackening will love this as well. I never understood why people liked the Locust.
Also sounded particularly bad on my car stereo - not the best environment for listening but it sounded a mess. Pretty much just drums and vocals coming through.
Still looking forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks!

Been listening to the new Sigh album. It seems to be the most straightforwardly metal thing they've done for a while. I mean, the guitar tone and solos are very modern metal/thrash sounding, and the overall package is just a a bit less out-there when compared their more bombastic stuff. I mean, it's still pretty weird as it's still Sigh.
There's a couple of real standout songs and moments though; the moments that really capture me are the moments when they lean into the prog, with some very nice hammond organs here and there.

Also, a friend shared this with me earlier, I really rather like the sound. Something else to add to the bloody bandcamp wishlist.

Spotted Disillusion have a new record out later this year.
I've you've never listened to Back to Times of Splendor, do it, it's amazing.

The way that the new Machine Head album's tracklisting is stylised makes me think of the Holy Grail end credits.

Megadeth 'The Sick, The Dying...and The Dead!' out today.
Another band that has released a good chunk of the album in advance. I'll have a quick listen now when this happens but I don't like wearing the songs out before the proper release.
Three songs in to the album now and impressions are very, very good. It has a great production that isn't too loud or distorted, and although Mustaine's always been a crap singer, he's always had an ability to write actual hooks, which I felt were missing from the last album, which whilst decent was just heaviness for its own sake at times. Well, they're back, there are actual melodies and earworms. It feels a lot closer to classic Megadeth.
UPDATE: Listen one completed. Wow. This is a brilliant album!

I really struggle to get past Dave's voice. Even the classic albums never clicked for me because of it, but the new songs even more so.
The way that the vocal lines overlap on We'll Be Back irk me, I know it's a common production technique but it really just puts me off.
Still, I'm glad people enjoy it.

He sounded like a 'Get off my lawn' on helium and cigarettes from a young age, yes. Exodus are another band I reckon were held back by 'unique' vocals in the day.

I bloody love classic Megadeth, part of the appeal was the borderline comedy aspect of Megadave's vocals

I'm nearly half way through this new Megadeth album and yeah except one track I REALLY like it so far. Hopefully it keeps this pace up for the second half. I got a high five in Sainsbury's from the slightly odd man on the till as he asked what I was listening to on my earphones. He then asked if I knew Dave was originally in Metallica. :/ .
