Didn't see that coming but a new Star Ocean announced during the PS State of Play just now.
Thought the last one was quite average but I'll always be a fan of the series so looking forward to seeing more on it in due course.

I'm hyped. I was hoping for a new Star Ocean not too long ago. I think the series' track record can be shaky, but it's always nice to have space opera RPGs, especially coming from Japan where they're even more rare. Now someone get Sega to make a new single player Phantasy Star.

The trailer did look a bit shaky, and I don't like the character designs/models, but I'm always up for a new Star Ocean to see what they do with the battles. The last game was a bit too chaotic with the massive party but I appreciated that it wrapped itself up in 30 hours, especially since I just finished a game with a 'see you in the next one' at 125 hours.

The frame rate in the trailer was shockingly bad, it looked like it wasn't getting anywhere near 30 at points.

A lot of it looked like streaming or shader compilation stuff - hopefully it's just because it was a dev build but it was fairly bad. I'm assuming this is using the same Tri-Ace engine.

This one has to be the comeback right? After a couple of 'divisive' releases and the twist in the PS2 game there's nowhere to go but up.

Don't know anything about the series, but thought it looked interesting. The frame rate was glaringly bad. It was the first thing I noticed from the gameplay footage and didn't give a good first impression. Once I got over that though I thought it looked enjoyable. Definitely got some Xenoblade energy from it, although looked like there was a little more variety in the action.
I'm intrigued.

Surprised they're set on releasing it this October because the framerate hasn't improved much from the reveal trailer.
Still, I'm really excited for this as Japanese video games don't do space opera too often. Looks like a big improvement over the last two games too, The Last Hope and Integrity & Faithlessness.
There's two other videos uploaded to SE's youtube too, one dealing with characters and battle system, and the other an 8 minute intro cutscene to one of the playable character's story.

Pretty shit visuals but I could be tempted. Will be a clear Jp dub with those voices though.

Yeah, definitely. Even though I feel the dubbing has actually improved a bit over the last two entries, the characters' mannerisms are still really in anime territory, which makes Japanese the optimal VO.

Demo for this is out today/tomorrow depending on shop time zones. I played it through on PS5 and I rather like it. Technically it's definitely better than the non-TriAce Vlkyrie game, though the PS5 does struggle a little in the second 'main' area because of the high foliage density. It doesn't drop below the VRR minimum outside of battle so on a VRR TV the performance mode did seem fine, while Valkyrie Elysium spent a fair bit of time below 48. Looks much cleaner too, though the text rendering choices they made are blurry and bad.
More importantly though I think the traversal and combat are really fun. It's super fast and the new blindside action is really dramatic. Looking forward to this one!

Can't wait! I already have it preordered so I'm in either way, but it'll be nice to sample it beforehand.

I think I saw it for cheap at GMG at one point so I might get an early order in. I suspect that you'll be able to pull out a lot of performance on PC if they let you at the settings. At the very least, foliage density is very high on PS5 combined with shadows which would be an easy win. Hoping to get it working on the Deck, the flight/dash thing is just asking for gyro controls!

I would imagine it'll be very customizable, as even the The Last Hope and Resonance of Fate remasters tri-Ace put out on *PS4* had loads of options. Playing either on PS5 allows you to played them maxed too, fwiw.

Assuming one's okay with the Star Ocean anime dolls aesthetic, this game is quite a looker. Trailers don't really do it justice. Not played much yet, only got to the point where the princess and her chaperone join you, so haven't much more to say at the moment.

Yeah, this is great. I have to master the blindside, but gliding around and getting surprise attack with the boost charge is cool.
I'll have to check out the Series X demo tomorrow to see if that looks any better. If not, I might cancel my preorder and get it for PS5 instead. I really like the subtle rumble when you're just running around the field. Xbox controller isn't good at that kind of thing.

Ahhhh, so you’re the one person that actually likes that “feature” in PS5 games.

Sounds like the game runs with double buffering if you aren’t on a VRR display so if it’s not 60 it’s 30. The issue is that I find a decent amount of the time it’s in the mid to high 50s, especially in the second area, so I that explains why I saw a lot more complaints than I expected.

Who knew the most heroic name in the far future would be Raymond.

The guy also has terrible hair, even for a JRPG.

Ahhhh, so you’re the one person that actually likes that “feature” in PS5 games. I like rumble. I like haptic triggers. DualSense is the perfect controller IMO. Well, almost perfect. Battery life is terrible.

Demo is a bit hit and miss.
- Raymond. Great name, terrible hair. Love it.
- The voice acting is miles better than SO4 even with the comical attempts at “adulting” the language
- The combat seems kinda fun, although poorly explained. What are the different attacks? Some seem to be stronger, but a bit of a heads up would be nice.
- Then they added the DUMA bit and I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to be doing with this charge dash thing. I’m sure I’ll figure out eventually.
- Music has thankfully calmed the fuck down after that opening section. I was getting a headache
- Linking attacks to AP feels bit limiting. I also seem to have more AP in some fights than I do in others. Hopefully this can be permanently increased.
- Feels a bit like Xenoblade Chronicles as far as the wandering around a world and hitting things bit goes, with more action focused combat, which is cool.-
Performance is generally ok on Xbox, but does get bogged down when a lot is kicking off
- Which is weird as this would be considered “a bit rough looking” on PS4 / Xbox One
Might pick it up if I can find a cheapish copy.

The AP limit feels so bad. Many a time it feels like I should be going all in on enemies only to press a button after 3 swings and realise my AP meter is drained and have to wait 2 secs for it to come back. This on top of a story that doesn't seem particularly interesting, ugly character models, tiny menu text, framerate drops when moving the camera and some of the worst lip sync I've seen in a long time. I gave Valkyrie Elysium a shot and was pleasantly surprised, even if £55 at launch seemed a bit much. No chance I'd pay full price for this.

Gave the PS5 demo a go and found it surprisingly enjoyable. Played in performance node with VRR and it looked pretty enough and seemed smooth enough to me. I used Japanese voices as the English dub in the trailer was fairly poor. The combat was quite fun, as was the D.U.M.A. traversal. Only played up to the inn so far.
I have a weird history with Star Ocean, started with 2 on PS1 and got to the second disc IIRC before getting distracted and abandoning it. Bought SO3, barely played it. Imported SO4 for 360 (had to get Asian copy for English on my Japanese 360) and despite its many fkaws enhoyed it and played right through the game up to the final dungeon and again got distracted... (i have a strong memory of a cut-scene so long my 360 controller turned off in this game). Finished SO1 on PSP and enjoyed. And finished 5 in PS4 (again flawed, bit it didn't outlive its welcome being a shorter game)
I will probably wait for a price drop on this though +as I did with 5) as there are bo compelling preorder stuff with the physical. Very heavy release time for RPGs at the moment though.

I played with Japanese voices at first as well, but Ray's voice sounds oddly too deep for him. Or for a JRPG protag at any rate. But when I switched over the English voices, the lip synch was completely off, so I'm not sure which I prefer. Will probably go Japanese tbh.
Tried the Series X demo, and it seems to my eyes that both the resolution and framerate are lower than PS5 under Prioritize Image Quality... so now I'm considering canceling my Xbox preorder and buying it for PS5 instead. 👀

I went for framerate mode, haven't compared the two yet, but with it being an action RPG it seemed the sensible option.

Switched to framerate mode on Xbox, and resolution seems pretty similar, but it looks as if it's dropped some post-processing effects. Fluidity is GREATLY improved though, so this does seem like the way to go, unless it's really unstable.
Under the English VO, Ray says "sweet!" whenever he picks up an item. But the S is kind of masked by the jingle of collecting the item, so it just sounds like he's saying "wheat!"
I'm posting too much so here's a quick edit instead.
Went back to the PS5 version and I'm pretty sure even this in performance mode looks better than Series X in Image Quality mode. oof. Guess yeah, I'm gonna have to cancel the Xbox preorder and get it for PlayStation. Although I do think Xbox in performance mode holds it 60fps a lot tighter than the PS5, but again, I'm pretty sure it's running at a lower resolution so it's expected.
Don't know why I expected anything else. Square Enix doesn't care about Xbox. I guess I was hopeful since Tales of Arise ran a lot better on XSX than PS5, but that's a different developer AND publisher. And even then, while perfomance was higher on Xbox, it wasn't to the extent of this game.

Played some of the demo and it is rough as buggery.
Am I still going to get it? Of course I am, been chasing that Star Ocean Til The End of Time feeling for 18 years, so why not try again.

Right, not had much time to try this because Bayonetta also unlocked and is very good. The PC version is kinda weird.
- On my big PC it did a one-off shader compilation step. This took nearly 10 minutes on my AMD 3900X, pinning all 24 threads. Someone was complaining on the Steam forum that they'd been waiting an hour and were only at 67%, which is why that doesn't happen on Deck, I guess. On the flip side that means that, at least until Fossilized gets everyone's shared shaders out there, you can expect some awful shader compilation. I was getting 10+ second freezes in the first area. - It wants to run at either 30 or 60fps. If you're not getting that (and have it selected) then you get horrible stutter. This makes 40hz on Deck unusable. - At least in the initial area the Deck was very happy running at 30, and it's actually quite responsive and looks alright in High detail. As a result it doesn't feel like much of a disadvantage, surprisingly. - It can run in ultrawide but to do that on a 3440x1440 monitor you have to select 4K resolution (eh?) and increase the FOV to max as it's Vert-.
The game itself is still nice and quick and fun so once you're up and running I think it'll be fine. Hopefully there's going to be a patch or two.
