To request clarification - is Toy Story Buzz (the toy) based on a real (in-universe) space ranger called Buzz? Or is this new real life (in-universe) Buzz a spin-off origin story for what later becomes Toy Story Buzz? Or was Buzz never a toy after all?

There's an interview with the director somewhere where he basically is trying to say "don't worry about it", but I think the rough general vibe is this is the character the toy is based on, but it's not supposed to be a "real" character in the Toy Story universe. I'm not sure they're going all the way and trying to pretend this is literally a movie that exists in the Toy Story universe, though. My head canon is that this is the gritty reboot of the mid 90s cartoon that was created to sell the original Buzz toy. |

Just took our five year old daughter to see this, she was into it as were we.
Looks fantastic, had a good story, some good supporting characters, I loved the relationship between Buzz and Hawthorne, but there was ultimately something missing that I can't put my finger on. Mid-tier Pixar for me.

We watched this over the weekend (via the high seas) and our youngest loved it. He initially whibged because he 'hates it', and my response was you've never seen it.
Anyways, he went off upstairs in defiance as me and OH started watching. 5 mins in he wandered past to get a drink from the kitchen.
The lure was too much, chopping bugs with swords was the opener he needed. Sat glued to it until the end.

Random Toy Story question that I might as well ask in this thread: do any of the movies (I've only watched 1 and 2) ever have toys meeting the same models as themselves?
These things are mass produced, I can't believe that only one person in town has each specific toy. We saw whole shelves full of Buzz toys in the commercial, surely Andy couldn't be the only kid in the neighbourhood who had one?
