I've also been listening to a lot of post rock in recent years. Mostly instrumental bands like Russian Circles, If These Trees Could Talk, Tides From Nebula, Toundra and similar, but also Long Distance Calling, which uses vocals from time to time.
Would love some suggestions for more bands in that genre.
Here's an example of what I mean, if you don't know the genre:

You should probably listen to Mogwai if you haven't already. They're kind of pioneers in the genre.
Also Godspeed You! Black Emperor. And Explosions in the Sky.

Genres are so stretched nowadays Yeah, I actually don't think "post rock" even has a solid definition at all. It seems to be modern progressive rock? I'm not entirely sure. It's why I listed a few bands as examples of what I meant. What seems to be pretty prevalent, though, is that vocals are rare, if at all present. |

The problem I have when telling people what my favourite Sigur Ros tracks are, is that I can't pronounce them at all. "Oh yes, I love *unintelligible mangled nonsense*, it's my favourite one"
But yeah, they're great, though a bit overplayed now that film directors have discovered them. Takk is probably my favourite album of theirs.

You probably already know the channel but "Where Post Rock Dwells" has been a great place for me to catch new artists, some streamed gigs and both new and old tracks. I'd say it's worth having a look through their videos and playlists.
They do a monthly "Best of" video which is worth a listen, here's September.
Good to see people mentioning Swans, Godspeed, Russian Circles and Explosions.
Red Sparowes are probably my most listened to Post-Rock band though, freaking love them. "members of Isis, Neurosis, Halifax Pier, Samsara, Angel Hair and Pleasure Forever.", yeah they were great and i'd have loved to see them live.

Find post-rock to be very hit and miss, but some of it is gold. Slint, June of 44, Talk Talk.
I never thought of Drive Like Jehu as post-rock, but I can see where you're coming from Dogbot. If anyone enjoys them they should try Unwound too. Maybe Hoover and even Envy might qualify for some people.

It's such a wide and loose genre. Been a lifelong post-rock fan. Low continue to skirt the edges of the genre, always different, but always themselves. Their latest record is incredible, some 20 odd years into their career they just keep getting better.

Its not post rock as such but an 80 minute mostly instrumental slow burn. One of my all time favourites.

Just realised that I recommended Mogwai without giving any indication as to what they sound like.
This is a pretty good example, but not quite as ear-breakingly loud as some of their other stuff can get (looking right at you, Like Herod)

I’ve no idea if these are still going or what they should like now but this is more of proper post rock sound from my uni days. Very pretty too. Yeah, they were really good. Seen them play a few times as they did a split with a band from my hometown(Next Autumn Soundtrack) so they would often play here when touring in the UK. |

A Mogwai gig is an experience not to be missed. Unless you already have tinnitus.
I still remember taking my wife to one, and an usher offering her the free earplugs because she had her fingers in her ears. She had to refuse, because those fingers were trying to shove the earplugs she had already got further in to block the noise.

Love a Mogwai gig, but go with my mates instead who have less sensitive ears than my missus. Probably due to going to so many ggs previously!

I'm sure Mogwai were responsible for my diminished hearing in one ear, totally worth it though, still one of my favourite live bands.
Loads of great bands listed here so far, just to add a few more of my faves: God is an Astronaut, Maybeshewill, 65daysofstatic, Saxon Shore, Unwed Sailor and Tristeza.

Everything felt so muffled at work that week after those two. |

One thing I do is delve into the many Spotify / Youtube post rock playlists - plenty of long ones out there, and they usually turn something up I go on to investigate. Edit: I see jellyhead has made a similar but more useful recommendation above |

I picked the two Irish bands I mentioned because they both fit the instrumental bit. And not just because Adebisi Shank are named after one of my favourite TV characters ever. Sadly, they're now defunct, but both they and And So I Watch You From Afar are responsible for some of the best, mesmerising gigs I've seen in recent years (although, not that recent any more). |

I have seen them described as anything ranging from Emo to post-hardcore, via both post-rock and math-rock, the latter of which is also often used for several of the other groups mentioned. They may be too vocal for the requirement anyway, with the Froberg vocals, but I never pass up the opportunity to mention them. My hearing was already utterly fucked from years of hardcore gigs before I ever saw Mogwai. Otherwise, good to see some very good, less well-known suggestions on here, too. |
