In combat take a little time to watch the tells from the monster. When is about to attack there is usually a winding up animation where you know you need to block or dodge. If blocking and then poking appeals then try using lance. Wait... I can block? Yep, with lance, sword and shield, charge blade and heavy bowgun. I think that's it. Personally I like lance, because you can buff up your block such that you can block pretty much anything. Of course, that means that when you try to block mega attacks in late game you are buggered. But it works 99% of the time. And by the time you get to attacks you can't block you will know what you are doing.

I really hope you enjoy this, Wunty - I haven't played Rise myself, but I did play World (albeit very poorly!), and I'm also having a lot of fun with Wild Hearts while I wait for Wilds to come out.
The hunting genre is so different from what I'm used to, in many ways, but it can be massively compelling if and when something clicks.

So the wife was on the telly last night and I fired up MH Rise on me switch. I’ve had it yonks and only very briefly played it before. Help. I have no idea what’s going on. Have a watch of this. The Arrekz channel always has good videos for MH.

Thanks chaps. had a quick look there and yep, was doing the hub missions and not the village ones. I was wondering why I was getting my arse kicked. The village ones are really simple just now fighting smaller monsters so that's better. Using sword and shield, and now I know how to block! A bit more clicked in to place there. Actually rather like it so far. It's VERY different to what I normally play.

Just seen the TGS presentation of Wilds running at 60fps on a base ps5. Fuck yeah. It's not locked though but I'm glad regardless.

I would have been very surprised if it wasn't going to hit that target anyway, Capcom has always been good about that stuff. It's just we're so conditioned by marketing speak to seeing 'betas' or even 'alphas' that are clearly more advanced than what an alpha or beta build should be.

Yeah, they're just terrible at locking a framerate though. Despite the actual terrible capture card colour reproduction they were using it looked pretty damn good, loading was almost instant and it looks like I'm going to waste too much of my life playing it like I did with World.

Wee half hour on Rise again this morning. I took out my first big monster (the Izuzu thing) and then made some armour and upgraded my weapon. Went out and killed it again and crafted the rest of my armour. Assigned skills to my little hairy mates and think it's all starting to click a bit more now.
It's... really quite good fun so far. I still think the combat is a bit all over the place just now but it's just not what I'm used to.
Is Sunbreak worth getting as it's on sale?

If you think it's got it's hooks into you, then yes, sunbreak add loads more end game content.

Yep. Sunbreak adds Master rank, some new monsters and two new locales. As it's on sale I would say get it. But you won't 'need' it for ages.

I noticed that Wilds is now available for pre-order, £65 for the base game!! I know I will play it for so long that it will end up having costed me about a penny per hour but there's still a part of me that thinks I should be looking to get it cheaper. There's also a part of me that would like to have a physical copy. Even though experience says the disc will just prompt a multi gigabyte download anyway.

You can save £5 buying credit through cdkeys.
Anyway, didn't you buy a whole new console for the last game?

Unless you're playing on ps5 and you can't buy it from cdkeys at all.

Are you banned from cdkeys? I was referring to PSN credit vouchers.

I meant games. It's garbage that Sony stopped keys being sold.

Erm, this is getting quite addictive. I love how you just take a contract, go into a map and then you can just chill out and explore before deciding to go after anything.

Oh for sure it's one of those rare games based around grind where the core loop is so good it doesn't feel like I'm grinding.

Plus there are lots of little hidden areas on the map to discover, rare endemic life, notes etc You don't have to find them all, but it's there if you want.. Oh, and fishing. Which I only do for the trophy...

It's such a different pace to anything else I've played. Starting to see the appeal. Getting used to the wirebugs as well. I ended so high up in the Shrine Ruins last night and had no idea I'd be able to get up there! The traversal is a joy. The auto climbing, wall running etc...

One other question for the moment is what's best to do with the camera? Am I better having the auto-lock on one or the one where I just tap L and it briefly targets the monster? The auto-lock feels more souls-like so more comfortable, yet I'm in danger of not being able to target the little guys.

Umm, so kids this just goes to show that there are always options to improve your playing experience. I usually just hop on the back of my palamute, ride around and sharpen.

You can sharpen on your palamute? That's awesome. I kept trying to do it mid battle and getting knocked about the place.

Getting used to sharpening my weapon in Wilds will take some doing - I only used the bow in World, which doesn't need any sharpening.

I have got traps, I think, as I've picked some up. Couldn't see them anywhere though. Unless they're in my little item bar thing.

Yep, they should be in the item bar that you can scroll left and right and then use the left button out of the diamond on the controller to place. When the monster is ready to capture the first indication is that your palico will tell you, and then the monster icon on the map will flash (I think it gets a blue icon overlay) My preference is to hit it with a couple of tranq bombs and then lay the trap - the capture enacts immediately and there's no risk of the monster escaping as your fluff your lines to throw the tranq bombs! You can also let it walk off to sleep, although sometimes it will go to another area and hang about. When it's asleep it won't be woken by the tranq bombs, so chuck them down then lay the trap under it. Look out for laying your trap just as the monster wanders off to a new area - I do this too often to want to admit to!
Rajang can destroy traps, I can't remember which way around they work, and use the trapping when asleep approach.
Personally I prefer shock traps to pitfall as it's easier to farm thunderbugs.
And note that some materials are only available via trap or via carving. So sometimes you absolutely don't want to use a trap.
Others may have other tips...
