It's kind of magical to see the marketing tricks working in real time. Yeah, it's really interesting to fall into the trap for a change. And really it's groundwork going back to FH3 for me, in terms of quality and enjoyment. There isn't another game I'd have done this for; there's been next to fuck all to show off the Series X all year; I've got some spare time ahead of me. Hook. Line. Sinker.  Equally I don't actually care. It's not too much cash, and I've absolutely rinsed the GPU upgrades (subbed to 2024 REPRAZENT!), so it is what it is. Vrroooooommm! |

As mentioned above, the Horizon games are fantastic, 4 was sublime I'm still playing it most evenings, there's no chance I wasn't going to buy both expansions anyway. Buy them now and it's 10% off plus early access and this is the game to make the Series X and CX (that I only 5 months ago spent £2000 on) sing. No worries, I would be doing the same, but yesterday’s DF video put me off it, and I can’t get through the main game before losing interest, let alone the expansions. I find it easier to think of the Horizon games as not so much something to complete but more a place to stay as long as you like and return to when it tickles your fancy. The expansions give them a lease of life, some are better than others, but as other have done I’ve pumped for the upgrade as I’d have bought the expansions anyway. Now if the wife would just have an early night…!!! |

Tried both display modes on Series X. Kinda disappointed that bells and whistles means 30 FPS. However it's a rock solid 30 FPS and those bells and whistles look reaaaaally good so that's where I'm living.
I've found both this and 4 to look really jarring in performance mode, cartoony almost. Kinda the look old Motorsports used to have.
The setting is brilliant and I did enjoy Blighty but this is better. Just a magnificent landscape.
Photo mode still lags when you come out of it. That's my only gripe so far I think.

I'm really torn now. I was all for playing in the 60fps mode because it's a fast-paced action game after all, and a faster frame rate offers less blur and more responsiveness.
It just makes sense for a racing game, and as you'll be travelling at speed the majority of the time, I'm not sure you'd notice the lower LOD settings.
... But all I keep hearing is how good the 30fps mode is.

Personal taste etc. I've found the 30fps uncomfortable to look at. I guess I'm fully spoilt by everything being 60fps now. I can't see any appreciable or perceptible LOD difference, I mean I know it's there I've watched the Digital Foundry vids, but whereas I normally go for Quality mode, I find Performance 60 mode much nicer in FH5.

Wonky servers at launch. It's been like this for the past two games too. Should stabilise over the next week, but pretty much ignore them for now.

I don't mind these but when you're disconnected your car screams to a halt, which is incredibly grating if you're in the middle of a huge score chain. |

Cheers. Didn’t get in the way of an “Off the grid” round of games, but yeah, annoying during free play!
I’ve opened up the Baja expedition and had a blast on the volcano, as well as throwing the Bronco around the sand dunes. Definitely a step up from the Australian desert.

A few impressions of the first few hours..
No shocks but it really is a bit of a stunner looks wise, running on Series X and in performance mode.
I’ve tried quality mode and found it unbelievably jarring by comparison, so much so I wasn’t sure if there was some slow down occurring. I play in car view and it felt smoother from bonnet or chase cam.
Bottom line, performance mode all day long for me.
The handling model does seem to be refined to a greater degree and have already started to get into Rivals in a big way. There’s no greater compliment to a handling model than hot lapping and trying to get the better of your own previous best.
Early on in the game and it already feels like a cluster fuck of icons and different things to do. I’d really appreciate an option to take a path, selected from options and be led down it.
Overall it’s precisely what I’d expect and in many ways want from a Horizon game. A world to spend some time in, explore and enjoy for as long as one wants to say for.

It's been like slipping into a comfortable pair of slippers for me. Absolutely gorgeous setting and I especially love it when you drive past a random ziggurat in the middle of a race, like that's a totally normal thing to do.
I've pretty much no-lifed it for most of today and Thursday, so have unlocked the majority of the festival stuff and done the final races for road, street and off-road. It's kind of crazy seeing people with double the roads explored than me already.

Deffo the highlight of this Gen so far.
30fps is a no go.. 60 for me runs fantastic. However, my lad is playing on PC with a 1080 240hz monitor and tbh, after watching that I'm hoping a 1080 120fps mode comes to series X .

A 1080p@120Hz mode for Series X would be awesome, and could easily be on the cards if the Series X can deliver ~120fps by just lowering the resolution.
Even if it's not solid, VRR could take up the slack.

And I thought I'd played it too much!
One annoyance I have and always have with these games is the XP board on the roof thing with no easily apparent way to jump up.
They also beat even Ubi games in terms of distraction and icon soup, with things like the seasonal and daily challenges a huge obstacle to doing what you wanna do.
However I do look at these as an 18 month to 24 month thing.
Hope we don't get a silly you expansion again for the second one. Having done Hotwheels and Lego where is next for them to go?

Do I need to trigger something to enable drift zones? Can’t believe I’ve not found any yet…
Also: check the rivals times on the Baja scramble. Somebody’s set 1:23, though they are level 1, and sans-VIP status, so perhaps a tester.

I just made sure to put a point into each festival site to begin with before I started focussing on putting all of my points into one of them.
Just finished the dirt racing finale in an unmodded Lancer... Bloody hell that took a while! (23 mins)

…and glad to see I still suck balls at them. Any tips? I either snap back into a straight line or end up in a spin. Maybe the 350Z isn’t a good one to practice in.

Yeah, server flake seems to be doing the same for me. Keeps thinking I haven't purchased the house that I bought and starting me at the festival. The Promo photos are still unlocked though so I think it is keeping selective progress such as levels and cars, at least for me.

askew I just used the 350z and had a look through the tuning set ups that other people have done. One of the top ones is for drifting and it makes it ridiculously easy... And yeah, loads of random bits of progress have disappeared for me even though I've always quit after the save icon has flashed up. Stuff on the festival page seems to be pretty common. It even let me claim the two cars twice due to my points dipping below what you need to claim them. (the NSX went for 700K+ in the auction house both times so not complaining!)
