It’s a been a bit grim this generation. Certainly had some fun, but my wallet is ready for some big hitters.

Yeah, despite having the Series X and PS5 in the house I've ended up gravitating to Steam Deck and Indie games more than any other this gen. XBOX comes in second mainly because the controller doesn't give me hand cramp. Must be 18 months now since I actually put any serious time into a PS5 game. There's just nothing there to tempt me. It was cross gen for the longest time, and then just stuff I wasn't that fussed about.
But yeah. Odd generation so far. COVID takes its share of the blame, but that isn't the whole answer.

I routinely play the ps5 more than the xbox as I got that first and to be frank they've both been pretty bad at the first party output. Xbox is finally getting there but PS has been severely lacking this gen. I don't even know what the point of the ps5 pro is if there isn't anything new to play on it.

If we're just counting the Series X and PS5 this generation honestly feels like the weakest for quality titles since I started gaming with the C64. Thank fuck for Nintendo.

I'd only partially agree with that. I think there's been some absolute stellar games that I've personally really enjoyed but it hasn't been consistent. That's down to many factors such as inflated budgets, trend chasing, fear of risk taking, greed of publishers and just how long it takes to make games these days. Regarding quality terms, if it also includes the state in which games are released then I'm fully onboard. This gen has probably been the worst for things being released in a shocking state and expecting full price for it with the slim promise that it will get patched to an acceptable condition. Stuff like paying 100 quid to play a game early before general release has exacerbated it imo.

Probably doesn't help that cross gen titles have dragged on and on and onnnnnnnnnnnn this gen. Feels like you can count the decent PS5 exclusives on one hand, and even some of those are getting ported to PC.
It's been a rubbish gen for exclusives on both sides.

I think it's also insane that most devs are only going to release one game per gen at this rate. My mind boggles at how Insomniac have pumped so much out already Naughty Dog have pumped out zilch.

Yeah, it’s been a pretty wanky output across the board.
PS5 has been more annoying personally, as I only bought it for all the fancy first party games it would get. Piss.

Each to their own I guess but the only next-gen 'exclusive' games (not on PS4 or Xbox One) that I've enjoyed this gen are Demon's Souls, Hi-Fi Rush, Forza 5, Astro's Playroom, RE4 Remake and Psychonauts 2. Compare that against the PS4 library alone and it pales in comparison. There's been some great games but the quantity of them feels way off. Hell, two of the ones above I like are remakes and one's basically a tech demo.

I don't even game as much as I used to, but I'm never thinking.. ah crap I've missed out on this game, because I was playing this.

Have to agree, it has not been great this gen, pandemic didn't help game production. Also publishers are just remaking or doing remasters (or cheap ports) of games as its easy money.
Didn't bother with ps5 as nothing I really wanted to play (still have not finished GoW 2018), also been getting Gamepass cheap for years (which will not be a thing soon)

I think we're on the same page to a degree, I definitely agree that the comparison of both generations libraries at their similar life cyles is terrible, however that list of yours is going to be smaller because Resi 4 Remake, Forza 5 and psychonauts 2 are cross gen games.

Haha, wow. Demon's Souls and Hi-Fi Rush it is then!
I was worried I was becoming jaded so it's a little heartening to see people feeling the same way about this gen. It's just never seemed to get off the ground.

Well we do have an exclusive Sony game being released this month...err...Concord. It's definitely what everyone has been asking for. Definitely.

There have been some highlights, Elden Ring and (for me at least) Starfield spring to mind, but I mostly lose interest in new games after a few hours or so and go back to playing Skyrim.

Starfield has surprised me, but I enjoy it for somehow being a cosy shooter. I also really enjoyed Forza Horizon 5. But that’s about it in regards to exclusives this gen. I have a PS5 now and I’m quite interested in Astrobot, but being a late adopter I don’t think I’ve missed anything of interest.
It’s technically cross gen, but the fact that the Switch pumps put almost as many exclusives, each year, as the PS5 has managed in 5 years is pretty shocking. As a Nintendo nerd, I’m enjoying arguably Nintendo’s best console and software output ever, alongside what is otherwise the most stale console generation ever.

What they need is a Twisted Metal mode. Give everyone guns and see who is the last car moving.
