The Seven Samurai: the greatest movie ever made. Endlessly rewatchable. Slays me every time. The Godfather: the only other pretty much perfect movie in my list. I struggle to understand how some people rate the sequel more highly, great though it is. Alien: the terror I felt watching this as a child has never left me. Nothing comes close. Aliens: obviously, this is included too, for different reasons, no need to elaborate. LOTR: especially Fellowship and Return. It really did justice to the most important book of my childhood. Arrival: totally absorbing, beautiful, heartfelt, miraculously gets away with its flirtation with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Sicario: I think he's the best filmmaker currently working, hard to imagine a movie more different than Arrival, but it's brilliant in its sheer brutality. Goodfellas: of all Scorsese movies, the most endlessly rewatchable. This is Spinal Tap: what's wrong with being sexy? Withnail and I: if you hit me, it's murder. This is England: fantastic rites of passage tale in its own right, but also led to one of the greatest TV series ever made.

Good to see John Candy well represented in this thread. I've been on a John Candy rush recently since reading a biography on him, and recently revisited The Great Outdoors, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and Brewster's Millions: - The Great Outdoors has its moments, but given the cast and John Hughes, it's far less than the sum of its parts - PTA isn't quite as relentlessly funny all the way through as I had in my head, and (watching with my 5yo) I forgot about the rental car desk scene... but there's no denying the impact of the finalé - Brewster's Millions quite frankly stinks; very little about the way the story plays out makes any real sense Cool Runnings will always be the definitive Candy movie.

Uncle Buck and Planes Trains are the true definitive Candy experiences - both from the definitive late 80s/early 90s feelgood director John Hughes

- LotR FotR (I saw this at the cinema after a seven week stay in hospital when I was about 19 and it was the best thing ever to be out, seeing my friends again and doing normal things, plus it was everything I wanted it to be).
- Empire Strikes Back (I remember watching this on Christmas Day for the first time when I was about 8 or something, playing along with the laser gun present I'd got).
- Predator (I watched this for the first time under my bedsheets through my Sega Gamegear when I was far too young for it and was pretending to be asleep, knowing my parents wouldn't approve. In later life it would be a go-to film to watch after drunken nights out when crashing at my mates house).
- Total Recall (More or less the exact same nostalgia factors as Predator. Also I went through a phase of watching this every time it was shown on ITV2 when I first got a digital TV. Which was basically every week for a number of months).
- Pulp Fiction (I just love films with atmosphere and this has lots).
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (my favourite Indie film. THE DOGSH NAMESH INDIE!).
Loads more, but the common theme is nostalgia and/or time and place leaving that imprint.

Forgive me if I have misread this but are you saying JP has aged poorly or isn't as good anymore? I will legit have to fight you to the death for having this opinion. Jurassic Park hasn't aged poorly, but when it came out perhaps its most compelling part were the visual effects. When I rewatch it today, the dinos don't impress me anymore. It is still a good film, but not among my favourites. Sorry for mentioning it in one sentence with Independence Day, the common theme there was simply that one of the major draws was how visually impressive they were. JP is a much better film than Independence Day, of course.

You all appear to have missed Midnight Run from your lists. They have, silly people..... Midnight Run - possibly my most watch film Goodfellas - probably second most watched The Fog - have watched it every halloween for years Trading Places - watch it every year on the day the tree goes up Jaws - masterpiece The Untouchables - another masterpiece Godfather 1 & 2 - epic The Limey - amazing atmosphere and I could watch Terrance Stamp all day Out of Sight - Sorderbergh's best (after The Limey) First Blood - gets so much right Glengarry GlenRoss - perfect play to film adaptation Network - wow Generally anything Lynch A lot of John Carpenter Scorsese generally Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1&2 (and maybe Inglorious Basterds and Hateful Eight) Hunt for Red October - I love a submarine film (honourable mentions for Das Boot, Crimson Tide, The Enemy Below) Bond (most of them up to Goldeneye at least) Withnail, Ferris, Fletch, Blues Brothers, Mallrats, National Lampoons Vacation, Weird Science, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Animal House, Spies Like Us, Ghostbusters, Cadyshack, Planes Trains & Automobiles Terminator, T2, Robocop, Commando, Predator, Predator 2, Total Recall Die Hard, Die Hard 2 (yes), Top Gun, True Romance, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 (and to an extent the others) Alien, Aliens, 2001, Close Encounters, Blade Runner BTTF trilogy, Indy (1, 2, 3), OG Star Wars, Goonies, Jurassic Park, WarGames The Man With No Name Trilogy, Once Upon A Time In The West, The Wild Bunch Get Carter - classic Caine and shots of Newcastle Apocalypse Now - madness Sorcerer - they don't make them like that anymore Where Eagles Dare, The Eagle Has Landed, Kelly's Heros - perfect Sunday afternoon entertainment Airplane, Airplane II, all the Naked Guns Charade, North By Northwest, Rear Window, Chinatown The Sting Midnight Run Sure theres others but these are films I could generally watch anytime. Some I might need to be in the right mood, but all have been watched several times, I suspect most 5+ and several 10+ times over the years. Unsurprisingly like a lot of other peoples lists, a lot came out when I was growing up, or were on TV a lot as a child. Lot's of other films I love or greatly admire, but I have only watched once or twice so they didn't make the list.

Does it stand up to repeated viewing?

Need to show this to my 12 year who claims she’s watched all the good films. Not suitable for above 12 yo but I think most seem to have forgotten to include Dazed and Confused in their lists

Meaning of Life is just different. It's a load of sketches loosely slung together. It's got some great scenes and songs. This could be said about Holy Grail too tbf. Though Holy Grail is funnier, it doesn't have much of a story. Life of Brian fits together much better as a movie.

I know general consensus is that Hot Fuzz is the best of the Cornetto trilogy, but they never matched Shaun by my estimation.

I literally write a blog every weekend listing top tens of things, and I've done permutations of my Top Ten Films a few times. But I'd say, generally speaking, my favourite films are: - Close Encounters of the Third Kind
- Jaws
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Blade Runner
- Die Hard
...which obviously marks me out as a massive 80s movie nerd cliche.

Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves
Not my best film by far, but definitely a guilty pleasure that I'll happily watch for the fiftieth time on a rainy Sunday. Just a fun bit of swashbuckling that doesn't seem to get made these days. A prime bit of Alan Rickman scenery chewing too

With news that a 2nd is now written and being filmed within a year or two I've got to include Gladiator.
Also it really doesn't need the sequel and it won't be the bat shit crazy version they originally had planned so just leave it
