I think at this point, I don't think it could get much worse.

Can he bat for us too?

Looks like Rob Key is putting together a group of people he'd like to go for a few pints with, and I'm all for it. That's how I run my business!

I think McCullum makes sense. He's lived in a setup that maximises the talent and players they have by playing clever cricket, thinking tactically on the field and fielding well.
For years we've failed to use our talent, played uninspired by the numbers test cricket and dropped more catches than nearly all other teams.

Oooof. Don't think you need a batting coach if your chasing 50...
I'm a big fan of McCullum his aggressive approach and captaincy was the right thing for NZ at the time but not sure I'd hire him as the England batting coach, especially over someone like Gary Kirsten.

Are we good again?

Well some pretty sharp bowling!
We are all at sea. Even the debutant nabbed Williamson in his first over. 2 for 6 are pretty good stats for your first five overs in an international.

Only thing I'm a bit surprised by is the pitch. Seen a couple of balls die completely and a double bounce to the keeper which is bizarre for the morning of Day 1.

Anyone with fifth day tickets, maybe even fourth, will be looking at the refund situation.

Oof, life on the old dog yet eh Jimmy!
Starting to think there may need to be more regulations around some of these squares. Not a fan of pitches that are so variable on day 1.

England, with depressing preditability, are now demonstrating that they are less able to bat on this Lords pitch than the touring side.

Wouldn't be England without a collapse.

Tbf, that pitch is awful. Could be a two day test at this rate.

So many poor shots though. I'm still not happy Bairstow walked straight into the team with no first class cricket and Brook didn't play. If averaging over 100 this year doesn't get you in this shambles of a batting lineup I don't know what does!

Not the greatest start to day 2 for England.
Edit : NZ not great either.

TMS in the background on a day off.
I think we’re under way again !

Thought England had fucked it up with the early loss of wickets but Root and Stokes helped recover to give them a chance. Stokes should have left the ball alone that got him out, very silly.

Always on the last ball of the over ! Stop it!
Root has kept us in it for sure. Some quite excellent coverage on 5Live today I listened to the whole thing and enjoyed it all. Tense.

It's always so precarious though. One brings two (or three etc) has never been more true than for this England line up.

Regardless of the outcome, Joe Root is a pretty bloody good batter.

What a strange but enjoyable Test, Joe Root got the runs and Matty Potts having a superb debut with the ball.

That’ll do nicely !! Root was in tears apparently.

Woo. Not quite sure how the BBC can label it 'stunning' though. 'Dogged', maybe.

Dogged is exactly what we've been missing in the whole batting line up for a couple of years.

If Root scoring at a run a ball for his last 60 runs is "dogged" then I'm here for it... first innings was obviously trash (again), but that was a great bowling performance and certainly "stunning" from Root with the bat.
