These are extremely lazy remasters. I think DF is going to tear these games apart. Ridiculous the state it's shipped in.

This hasn't turned out well at all really.
Has anyone played the Mafia trilogy? How'd that turn out as I'm interested in playing the first game.

Much better than these. Well, the first game specifically. II is just a standard high res remaster AND III is more a GOTY edition with the DLC included.
But yeah, Mafia 1 looks great, plays well enough. It's not an open world game though, it's a linear game set in a city. So there's a big city map, but you can't really explore and fuck around in it until you complete the story. You drive from point to point during the story missions, but that's the extent of the traversal.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of it not being a typical open world game. I've actually played the original versions of Mafia 2 and 3 so not as bothered about those but did like them at the time.

This thread is punching all my trigger points. Mafia 1 now (its 2K, Take Two Interactive) I worked on that too. I managed to get flu and what I mostly recall is 2 days rolling around in bed with a fever while the bloody racecar mission played out in my head about 300 times. That is a horror I will never forget, and another game I will never play again.

I played a few hours of San Andreas on PS5 last night and I have to say for the most part it actually isn't close to being as bad as some of the highlights suggest to be honest. On a street level it actually looks quite decent for a remaster of a PS2 game.
There are some pretty bad frame drops that are totally unforgivable for what this is, however. Sound seems to be completely untouched so all out of cutscene dialogue sounds like it's been recorded with someone talking through a traffic cone. The biggest buzzkill though is the total lack of atmospheric effects. Gone is the orange hue in Los Santos and the infinite draw distance means I can see Mount Chiliad plain as day from Grove Street like it's the 5 minute drive away it actually is in reality, rather than the artificial sense of it being a cross state journey you got in the original.
It's no Cyberpunk by a long stretch though. Unless there are some total game-breakers later on if you're just looking to replay the story for the first time in ages like I am you'll probably have an alright time with it.

The Switch version still has that orange hue, even with the extended draw distances, which I personally do not mind. What does hurt my eyes however is the texture work in GTA 3, specifically. A lot of buildings have giant window textures that visually pop out from the buildings they're meant to be on, which makes it worse than the original.
I certainly wasn't expecting any more, technically, than what they've advertised as a remastered trilogy, so in that respect I am not remotely fussed. However, the amount of bugs, texture popping, mesh warping, frame rate issues, etc... That is just mental. These aren't finished products.

I only played the first mission or two on GTA3 so I haven't seen the horrors that produces. To be honest the handling model of the cars on that one is so much worse than I remember that I will probably struggle to get through all of that one anyway.

It's no Cyberpunk by a long stretch though. Who'd have thought, a year ago, that this would be a phrase used in the sense of "not as bad as", when discussing a dodgy port of a PS2 game? Strange times.

I'm just quite enjoying playing through San Andreas again on Game Pass (Series X). Most of the music is in there (I think the initial lists that went out were just wrong) although a few heavy hitters are missing. At times it looks good when you consider the base game is basically still running as it did on PS2. The QoL improvements are good enough.
It doesn't look fantastic by any means though, and there are a fair few glitches and weird stuff going on. I guess YMMV but it's all I wanted from it tbh.

I know its more difficult than a quick cash grab but I cant help think that a proper remake of each one, released individually would have been an infinite money cheat.
One a year or something over a few years, filling in the gaps in the soundtrack with other well curated music. Not this lazy bullshit.

Yes it's crazy, a well done remake of Vice City alone would have been a cash cow for years. (And because I always have a GTA Online angle to any GTA news - I also can't believe they haven't tried to do a Vice City style area, or radio station, or retro car set etc in the online)

How do you not put these games on modern hardware- especially when it’s your own code- and not have them fucking singing at 4K 60fps?

I suspect its because they lifted the code from the PS2 and manhandled it onto mobile phones and then took *that* code and splatted it onto next gen consoles.
I mean, its just a guess, but its probably third hand code at this point.

Played Mafia remaster and really enjoyed and completed this time!... I played original on Xbox all those years ago and gave up, as much as I enjoyed it. I have also played, enjoyed and completed the definitive Mafia3 (all dlc) which I think is the same as in the trilogy. Special shout to the music in Mafia 3, it is excellent. As for 2 looking around the net, it gets a lot of hate as a remaster, Mafia 2 itself is a great game and I would recommend.

If I'd had paid £50 then I'd be laying into this a lot more than I have. Having it on Game Pass is like a lot of the games I wouldn't typically buy.. so I'm enjoying SA. Same for PS Plus and GTA 3 I guess?

Yeah it's in no way worth 50 notes. £10-15 each with the option to buy seperately would have been the fair shout here.

Same for PS Plus and GTA 3 I guess? I thought the same initially - and I'll still give it a bash on game pass - but then I thought Microsoft will have paid to have SA on game pass, and that money could have gone to a more worthy game / developer. If GTA VI was imminent, I could understand these half arsed remasters, but as R* seem happy sitting back creaming endless profit from idiots / addicts via GTA V Online, I'm not sure what their excuse is.

I'll have to see if I can find my original PS2 copies over the weekend, I know I've got at least two copies of the NTSC original printing somewhere, one NTSC first print of Vice City and an NTSC Sunday Driver edition of San Andreas, so that should be all the original content present and correct.
Maybe the originals are good enough, but who knows until you boot them up and see how they play after all these years. Somebody mentioned missing camera angles for GTA 3 in the remake which would be a shame, I rather liked the alternate angles, they weren't an optimal way to play but were fun nonetheless.

10 minutes of San An and I realised I haven't got the patience to bother spending much time with it, when there's so much other quality stuff out. Good work, GamePass.

They could have even done remakes of the original 2D ones, do them as isometric 3D things if they wanted. They’ve have made truckloads off them too.

Chinatown Wars if my favourite of the series. Would love a remaster of that. Throw in some multiplayer for good measure and you'd be golden.

I still amazed they allowed drug dealing in a Nintendo game.
