Who’s the little dweeby mate who, according to this, is culpable for some stuff too, do we know their name? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_TeretWhen the BBC were making a real life show following police detectives this was the case that they followed. Not available on iPlayer at the mo, but is probably available somewhere (3 x 1 hour episodes) www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wh973

Clearly there was an undercurrent of darkness and menace at the time surely? Not sure I follow you on “genuinely wasn’t there”? There's a reason why Saville was so popular in the 70s/80s and I don't think it's coming across so far. Maybe it will in later episodes, but so far it's all about the man behind the mask, and that doesn't tell the full story of how he was able to do what he did.

How old are the people who remember him being on children's TV? Because I don't think he was on any kids TV when I was watching it growing up. It'd be mostly appearances on other things like Parkie or Wogan, or retrospectives. Now Rolf Harris, he was a firm fixture in our house with his art show and animal hospital. Where's our Rolf Harris biopic? He was on constantly when I was a kid - Top of the Pops, Jim'll Fix It, British Rail and British Telecom ads, he was everywhere

I must have been just on the cusp of his omnipresence then. I would have been 9 when fix it ended and I vaguely recall it seeming like an old boring show back then and never watched it.

I only wrote in once, it was when we moved to America when I was ten and I wrote to ask if my friend Barry could come and visit me. Funnily enough it wasn't picked up.

Having a friend called Barry definitely calls to a certain era of time. There's surely not many Barry's under 40 these days!

Ironically after school he moved to America and got fat whereas I went home and ... well not *that* fat

My mate got on Jim'll fix it, but I'm not sure if it aired. He wanted to play the guitar with someone, can't remember who. They gave him a tape of his part and we watched it at school.

Think I was 10 when it ended and I recall him being extremely well known and seemingly respected. I was never that fussed about it but it was the sort of show my grandparents would watch with us if they were babysitting on a Saturday. Then post Fix It through the late 90s he still had a massive profile and was regularly invited on various panel and talk shows across the four channels.

Being an older member of FG, he was almost never off the telly. As a kid i had no idea obviously but as I got into my teens, it was obvious he was dodgy as fuck. And iirc, the rumours were all out there. The cover up wasa long time before though.

We never had it/him on because my dad absolutely fucking hated him. Like viscerally loathed the sight of him.

This is the age of the train
All the big brands had him in adverts: Bisto, Raleigh think he popped up as one of the celebs in a Woolworths Christmas ad too

I watched a really interesting BBC 4 documentary about British Rail marketing campaigns right before the Savile thing blew up. Somehow doubt they could repeat it without cutting half of it.

It’s also why there there is little to no black and white footage on TOTP2

This is what I think the show is missing - the fact he was ubiquitous as a figurehead of British society isn't coming across stongly enough, yet it was the very thing that enabled him. They touched on it a little last night with the old footage of him and the Songs of Praise scene, but otherwise Coogan is only playing it one way.

I think thats unfair. There is a decent bit of him flipping on and off like a switch depending on who he is talking to.

Watched two episodes so far. It's so fucking grim I'm not sure I'll manage through the other two. I'm watching in disbelief at some of the stuff that's happening, all the while knowing full well it did. It's not entertaining, and I'm not sure entirely the purpose of it. Perhaps it's cathartic to the victims to have something else out there portraying him in his true light. It's very well done however, and I agree with nick that it definitely does show how he flips depending on the company. Coogan's performance is so good and subtle that it's just not completely overt, which makes it all the more chilling.

A British Rail ad with Gary Glitter just popped into my head with him being depicted dipping into a vat of anti-aging cream to keep his young persons railcard. Failcard in hindsight.

Two episodes in and yeah, it's great but horrible but also great.
Coogan is just absolutely perfect for the role. There's a jarring moment when he first speaks where you can't not hear Partridge, but you soon get past that.

I said this in the TV review thread but, I don’t know whether it’s because his Mum-Ra era is the one I’m most familiar with but it could just be him on screen in the last episode. It’s genuinely quite unsettling. Whatever the merits of the series itself, Coogan deserves all the awards.

I've watched 2 as well. It's engrossing but a very difficult watch. Not sure if I'll watch the other two.
It stays with you after watching it which makes me feel slightly sick.

Finally got around to watching the first episode. Mostly just to confirm what everyone else is saying, Coogan is incredible but the show itself is a gross, grimy thing to watch.
