Yeah, I kept thinking some of the mannerisms were very AP, but then they're going to be, it's Steve Coogan. Don't think it helps I'm listening to From the Oasthouse at the moment.

Think he'd rather have AP on his CV than pulling off a paedo.

Hmm. It's well made, but it's already feeling a little too hindsighty in places, and there's a constant undercurrent of menace and darkness in the way Coogan plays him that genuinely wasn't there. I think it would be harder hitting if it felt more like the household friend we grew up with, interspersed with moments of evil. Opening with the funeral felt like an unnecessary "Didn't he fool you all." reminder to those involved too. Penny for their thoughts. Clearly there was an undercurrent of darkness and menace at the time surely? Not sure I follow you on “genuinely wasn’t there”? The funeral thing was good to see seeing as many wound have forgotten all that.

Yeah. He didn't really trick people. Hell, he was on camera with Theroux being a cunt and nobody cared. I also would argue that he wasn't so much as "sinister" all the time. He did clearly have an ability and rapport enough to be liked by audiences. I am pretty sure that is the entire point ?

The funeral at the start blew my mind. I had genuinely forgotten he’d gotten such a send off. It’s mental. Just watched the first episode and I do agree it’s sometimes hard to not see partridge but to be fair it’s slight and not very often. Coogan on the whole plays him brilliantly. What’s important so far is that there is nothing to try and make the viewer understand, sympathise or empathise with the man. Instead you’re watching the entire time aghast at his actions, and how those around him, even early on, are normalising his behaviour. It’s not a pleasant watch.

It was good but, to my point on the previous page, I dont think the world needed a 'Jimmy is a pervert' show. We already knew.
I suppose it having the real victims adds something and gives it a validity that most of them dont and it does contextualise him as just being a bastard at all times which people may not have known but it is, at the end of the day, more misery porn. And Im not really sure implying that he is basically Norman Bates is healthy or helpful. 'He's a sex case because his mother didnt love him' is shifting the blame a bit.

Quite. I think there's a line at which "oh if only his mum had loved him" stops working. I'm not sure where the line is but it's definitely waaaaay before repeatedly having sex with kids and people in comas.

Tbf, the balance was always going to be tough. He *was* fucked in the head and he *was* completely obsessed with his mother but.. yeah... I dunno I may have dialled that back a bit.

I think everyone knew what was going on. I thought he was creepy when I was a little kid. I believe he had a lot of dirt on some high up people in the BBC. Everyone knew he was a wrong 'un. Even my mum, who never watched TV and knew nothing about popular culture, said it at the time. It's incredible how he got away with it.
gah - hate the way it takes you to the first post not the last one - sorry, playing catch-up

Apparently, the rumour among tory circles, is that his protection largely came when he started moving among the upper eschelons of the conservative party. The likes of Ted Heath were just as bad as he was and afforded him some protection when they started Epsteining kids away together.

Even as a child, I remember finding him deeply sinister to the point I'd ask to change the channel whenever he was on the TV.
Similar to what others have said, I don't see the point of making this. I'd argue such levels of genuine evil and depravity is beyond being dramatised and doing so is borderline misery porn (from what I've heard, refuse to watch it).
Highly doubt they'll touch his apparent protection from the police and government. It being broadcast on the BBC too, when people where actively blacklisted by the BBC for trying to expose him, just makes me wonder what they're hoping to achieve?

Can’t say I ever had strong thoughts about him or his behaviour as a child. I did hate Jim’ll Fix It though, it made Noel’s House Party look ok.

How old are the people who remember him being on children's TV? Because I don't think he was on any kids TV when I was watching it growing up. It'd be mostly appearances on other things like Parkie or Wogan, or retrospectives.
Now Rolf Harris, he was a firm fixture in our house with his art show and animal hospital. Where's our Rolf Harris biopic?

I don't actually remember him being on TV really. Not with a regular show or anything. I don't remember him presenting stuff.

I just about remember jim’ll fix it but never watched it. He was just a weirdo who turned up on children in need for some reason until the Louis Theroux thing. It’s quite enlightening to see how broad his appeal was in previous decades, that’s where this program shines over a documentary

Who could ever forget the scouts having their lunch on a rollercoaster! Pedo stuff aside that was pretty funny TV back in the day.
I'm pretty certain I didn't even have an inkling as to what a pedophile was back then, it was only much later on when it became apparent he was a bit weird.
