It's nearly November again and I've decided that this year is the year I bloody well do it again, and finish one of the novels I have started in previous NaNos. I know that there haven't been many uptakers in recent years, myself included and I don't know if the likes of Sunjumper or Carbon Altered made the jump over here. Metaldog has also been absent from EG for years but I know there's still a few on here that have done it, if memory serves harrypalmer , Wizzard_Ook and 😎 have participated previously, would you be tempted again? There are others as well but I forget.
I've been typing a lot recently and am hoping that I may be able to keep some momentum going.

I'm guessing it stands for something like National Novel Writing Month? But that's me attempting to reverse engineer it.

We had a lovely lady in charge of our region when I started. Really good with her encouragement, sending out wee stickers and things but she sadly passed away a couple of years later. I'm someone that very often needs a write (lol) kick up the arse and I find this has been good in the past.

Count me in.
It'll end up being more of a novella, but I've had an idea for a story I've wanted to write for a while.

I'm writing a book so I'll participate. So the idea is to write a minimum of 50,000 words in the month. If you're struggling to finish your book it may be a good incentive for you? Failing that (if you're quite happy plugging away at it), it's just good to do anyway, as there's quite often a nice sense of community that builds up, especially if you register on the site.

I’ll try! Haven’t even tried writing anything for years, but it’s still an ambition.

Thanks for the tag. I’m a maybe. What I think I’ll do is plan out what I want to write between now and November and I’ll decide then. I started something I was quite invested in (wrote 15,000 words), but I reached a dead end with it. Tried restarting it a few times but struggled to get anything done. Think it probably needs a proper sitting down with and giving it a proper crack. Too easy to get distracted!

I'm the same. I just recall reading both your work years ago and really liking it. Every year I say to myself that I'll do it and hopefully finish something. Think it's part of my midlife "now I'm 40" crisis thing that I really want to give it a better try this year.

Glad to see that the tradition goes on on the new forum. I'm in. I'm thinking of going rogue again this year. Skyshell my 2011 (?) project keeps looking at me with I creasing impatience and having reread most of it, it does need some serious work.
Or I could start a new story; I just wish that I'd remember even one of the ideas I had this summer. The closer November is the less inspiration I seem to have.
I'm also going to pester MetalDog to see if she finally comes back. And Carbon_Altered and Metalfish and boo...

Nice to see we're keeping Nano going in FontGeek land. The '16 and '17 Nanos were great times, and I enjoyed reading everyone's contributions. I've been wondering if I have an ideas worth working into a short story. Whatever happens, it'll either be finished by the 19th, or it'll be finished automatically because FF14 expansion launches wait for no-one!

sunjumperMissed your posts in this thread. Awesome you're here. I had a last minute change of heart and wasn't going to do it. But sod it. I'm going to be a bit of a rogue and use it to finish this novella I'm doing (it was only meant to be a short sotory but it's grown arms and legs) and then I have an idea for either a short story, novella or novel (again, it'll probably just spiral out of control) to begin mid month at the latest, hoping I dust this current thing off. Either that or I might try and actually finish one of my previous NaNos if I can find my way back out of whatever ridiculous narrative corner I ended up in. Word count is going to be an estimation as I'm on my typewriter like a complete hipster but hoping I can hit the 50K in total.

Think that was around 2100 words this evening. Utter shit of course but I made a bit of progress plot wise amongst the pish so it's all good. Decent start to November.

I had a spectacular inspiration and motivation crash today. And as the weeks grew closer to November what ever ideas I had slowly left my brain leaving it blank. The constant low level stress my work is causing mixed with the stress of NaNoWriMo pushed me into deer in headlights mode.
But then I look back at all the years that came before and apart from one I did something every year since 2010... I also remember my advice to people like me. Fuck the 50k.Fuck the deadline. It's just about you and your story now. Every single sentence you write is a win.
So I will join. I will go rebel as mentioned and rework Skyshell, for some reason that story is the one that wants to come back and be finished the most.
I will probably not be able to produce any significant work before the weekend. But if I have the time I will do something.
As always I'll try to read and give feedback to what all of you share here.

sunjumper Glad you're on board man. I think this is the first year I've actually wrote something for at least 5 or so years. I keep entering then losing the will come 1st November. As you say, every sentence is a win and I'll bear that in mind. I'm not going to get stressed about the target, just keep writing when I can and see what happens. Good luck with Skyshell.

So. I thought I straighten out the scenes that are already there. Work on the pacing etc...
It turned out that I pretty much started rewriting the intro scene from scratch. 1.8k ish words. Not bad all things considered. Will probably post the first results in Friday.

Oh boy, the thread is on fire this year? Well I fought my self through the old text and rewrote a lot and like the new version more. It certainly has a better pacing and all the bits and pieces now fit better together I think. Still not done with the first chapter but I rather post something than nothing and if anyone wants to give some feedback I'm all ears. Here it is: Chapter 1

Ha yes. Think it's just you and me!
Ah nice one you've posted something. I'll give it a read shortly!
I'm off to a decent start it seems, 15K words so far (mainly pish but that's the point I suppose!). I've got a rough ending in mind for this but how much waffle I'll conjure between now and then remains to be seen. Tell you what, I've never used so much Tipp-ex in my life.

Well we are a very exclusive club as it seems.
Well as long as there is at least one other crazy person in here, it's not to bad.
Pro tip: stop drinking your Tipp-Ex.
Also are you going to pit your stuff online. I'm curious and a beta reader can help you getting your story under control.

I can't as it's all hard copy on my typewriter! Which in hindsight wasn't the best thing to do a nano on but I was midway through a story anyway on it so thought I would finish it up in a few days and get on to something else. Seems to have grown arms and legs however. Was a short story, is now a novella and I'm worried it'll actually get bigger. Thing is, it only DESERVES to be a short story. Think there will be a lot of editing!

Typewriter?
Damn, that is old school I can respect that.
Also it will make editing easier, red pen on paper is often better than doing it on a computer screen and you'll be forced to write an edited copy on a computer. (unless you cheat and scan and OCR of course)
You can at least tell me (us?) about the story and what's happening with it apart from mutating into a monster.

Yeah I'm actually really enjoying typing on it if I'm being honest. Probably used it for about 200 pages since March and it's just nice to use. You get used to grabbing the tip-ex (I actually use the mice as there is no drying time) when you make a typo and can get up to a pretty nifty speed once you get going. Weirdly I'm actually more accurate with this than a regular keyboard but it's probably just the knowing that I'll have to fuck about with correction tape making me concentrate more.
In all fairness it's barely worth describing. I began it as a fun little haunted house story that I came up with last year (how would you cope with lockdown if your house was haunted knowing you couldn't leave). I was just going to bash it out and move on to something a bit meatier but it's kind of going odd places now.

How many ghosts, monsters etc... are there. And define odd. (if you are trying to make it sound boring you are failing spectacularly.)

sunjumper, I read your first chapter. I really like what is there so far, needs a bit of editing to tighten it up but as you mentioned flows really well. I do enjoy being thrown into the middle of a story with no real clue as to what is happening only for it to be revelled the more you read. Looking forward to reading some more, well done.

sunjumper That was a brilliant mix of action, character and world building. All very deftly done. As Jack says there is editing needed, mainly grammatical I think but I can't think of anything else that doesn't work. It's very engrossing and there's a lot hinted at there that makes you want to know more. I can see why you went back to it, it's very good indeed!

sunjumper Erm. Right, so my story is the most hackneyed slop going but as I say it was going to be a short throwaway short story for some practice, so I apologise for the unoriginality! The gist, essentially so far is this: Man lives alone following the death of his daughter (14yo, had an arguement and she left the house, only to be found strangled in the park nearby) and the subsequent departure of his wife (wife left due to marriage breakdown following daughter's death). Drawing on all the shit from the last year I have imagined him isolated in his house during an increasingly aggressive haunting type situation that is going hand in hand with his decreasing mental state. Food shortages begin to grip the country, bodies are being seen taken away from neighbouring houses with increasing frequency and he has to perform blood tests on himself on a daily basis. The more physical the hauntings become, the more he has to seal off parts of his house, hemming himself in further and further. Something to do with a dark ages demon or spirit type shit drawing on his weakened state to thin the walls between realities and fucking with him to weaken him further to eventually possess him or some shit maybe. Not sure yet. As his mental state is declining things are getting increasingly surreal with dreams merging with reality and the death of his daughter and the fact he could do nothing to help her manifesting itself. Stuff Like I say, hackneyed and predictable but I'm quite engrossed.
