You should have heard his rapping style when he was with Jaz-o. It was that rippity rap fast flow.
In fact if you listen to some of Jaz-O's stuff you can see how much he influenced Jay-Z.
His fast flow style was awful though. I'm going to have to listen to his stuff again to see if I can become more of a fan.

Yes jay z black album is fire, need to put that on next. Currently cleaning the house to watch the throne album and I forgot how much I love a lot of it. There are some very average tracks in there but maybe six or seven absolute monsters. I went and saw them perform that at the O2 Arena and it was amazing. Something I love about seeing Jay Z live, I've only seen him twice, but he sounds exactly like he does on his albums. He makes it sound effortless. |

Yeah I've also seen jay twice and yeah he is nice and crisp on the mic..I've been to far too many concerts where I can't make out what they are saying (I know that's also down to the sound system and sound engineer). I wasn't a fan of kanye live though. Eminem was boring, Nas was pretty boring live. Dmx was amazing live. Kano amazing. Skepta was shit live.saw the roots and the show was amazing but on the the tracks where I didn't know the lyrics I couldn't understand a word. There's some random live thoughts  . |

Oh man I'm so upset I didn't get to see DMX live. There was going to be that concert in the UK where he was at and I really wanted to go then Corona hit. I didn't mind Kanye however he had a very Kanye moment where he got annoyed at whoever was filming the event, stopped the song and told the dude videoing where he wanted him to stand. Full disclosure, I love Kanye. College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation are some of my favourite albums. Dude is a bit out there but I really like him. I really like 'Last Call' where it's just him speaking about how he got a deal into the industry...both; "Oh my god is that a black card? I turned around and replied why yes but I prefer the term African American Express" and "Mayonnaise coloured Benz, I push miracle whips" are both so simple yet still absolute brilliant bit of play. Also My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the best albums ever and you can't tell me otherwise. One of my favourite hip hop gigs was Jurassic 5. That was a brilliant night. Also bumped into Charlie 2na and Akil the MC just before the show and the asked if me and my friends knew anywhere they could grab a smoke. We happened to be having one and like the little groupie bitches we were, we gave them some of ours. Through the show they spotted us in the crowed and kept pointing at us, I felt like I had made it, right then and there. Big Daddy Kane was really good live too. I'd love to see The Roots... Well, I'd love to see Black Thought live, dude is a genius. I listen to his Freestyle every so often just to remind myself why he does what he does and I don't do what he does. Love his verse on Father Figure too. I've not seen too many UK rappers really. Rodney P was really decent, as expected. Ocean Wisdom while a great rapper the venue had awful acoustics so I could barely understand him. Saw Dizzee Rascal at a festival and enjoyed his set. I'd love to see Kano though, he is probably one of my favorite guys on these shores. Edit: I've completely messed this post up. oops. edit again: I also forgot how much I love the beat Nell makes in this tune. Also his wife has the better verse on his own song. |

As for Jay-Z, I'm confident that he's not for me. I did pull a few tracks into my favourites but even when I'm listening through them on shuffle, I still skip them. They're good tracks, I just don't enjoy listening to them. I think it's his voice and general pompousness

Heart of the City Brooklyn's Finest Dead Presidents II D'evils Feelin' It Izzo Never Change U Don't Know Renegade Which isn't bad for 2 albums (I've only listened to those 2 and Black Album) It's weird because I liked them enough when I was listening to them but, like I said, generally skip them (but I also don't want to remove them!). I think they're good as Jay-Z songs but I'm usually not in the mood for Jay-Z
edit: I haven't listened to The Black Album since switching to Tidal, so no tracks from that yet (they only have the censored version)

I’ve always found the whole Jay or Nas thing a bit odd as while both are very important contributors to the culture, neither are GOAT level. Both were followers of trends not creators. Both put out albums full mostly of filler not killer. Both have their best days loooooooong in the past.
It’s a bit like a raging debate over whether Neighbours is better than Home and Away. Neither were really that great at the time anyway and it’s certainly not a relevant debate today.

Yeah, I'm not really bothered about feuds. Most of them are old news now anyway and as far as I can tell, they've made up. I imagine the Jay-Z or Nas thing came about from that feud though
I do have a particular fondness for Nas but that's at least in part tranferred from RumMonkey being such a fan and recommendeding stuff when I started listening to hip hop
I'd love to be into Jay-Z because it'd just be more music to listen to and there's plenty of tracks I can see are great

For example... EMPD, BDP, Marley Marl, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane were all doing that sort of thing before Nas did. That isn't to say that illmatic isn't a (all time) great record, but it leans heavily on what has gone before. |

Illmatic is one of the best albums of that era, but it was about as on trend as you could get in 94. They literally just used all the producers like Primo, Large Professor, Pete Rock etc that had been reinventing the sound in the very early 90s and even late 80s.

Yeah true the producers used I just feel it went far further lyrically than most at the time. Like I love LOVE big daddy Kane but his songs were going like the lyrics in illmatic.

Lyrics and delivery wise Nas did commercially what the likes of Ultramagnetics and Kool G Rap in particular had been doing on the underground for a while.
Kool G Rap doesn’t get anywhere near the credit he deserves for his influence. He is the one that shifted rap from ‘clap your hands, it’s party time!’ to street life punchline type stuff and not much has changed since.

I saw Big Daddy Kane live once but I can’t remember where. I’m really getting old… Even today most rappers can be traced back to one of the Juice Crew, generally Big Daddy Kane or G Rap. Saw Public Enemy with a live band the same year. That was decent too

I’ve been very lucky to have seen quite a lot of significant acts over the years. I think I’ve seen pretty much everyone I would have wanted to at some point with two very notable exceptions being Gang Starr and Beastie Boys. Big regrets missing out on both.

It was a great little skate park turned club. If I wasn't there for a drum and bass night I'd be there for a Hip Hop night. "Why is it raining indoors?" then you realise to keep your hand over your drink! |

Odd request but hear me out. This video just popped up on my YouTube feed and it's really bothering me...
You only need to watch the first few seconds of it. The beat they're using is quite clearly based off of a hip hop beat and it's really annoying me because I can hear the song in my head and almost hear the words but I can't quite put my finger on what the beat should be.
It's really stuck in my head and I feel like I'm being tortured as it feels like a song I know and love but can't work it out

No idea. But on the subject of earworms, my mate at uni (23 years ago) had a mix CD with a remix of the Talkin All That Jazz over the 900 Number, but where the beat was chopped up in places. I've had it rattling around in my head for all this time and just located it on youtube
