Why would they? I'm sure the Spanish channel was biased towards Madrid.

A bit of bias is normal but the OTT stuff is just amateurish and cringeworthy.

I feel like any channel from X country would be biased in favour of the team from X country, really. If Man City or Man U or whoever was in the final I doubt the English pundits would go "Nah fuck 'em, Real all the way bruv"

I wonder how it feels to have someone whose retired and given up like Bale getting the same medal you busted your guts for

There's a difference between catering for British television and sheer fucking delusion though. Hearing stuff like "Liverpool are the best team in Europe" when they've literally just lost the European Cup minutes earlier just reeks of pathetic insecurity.

Madrid are the one team who are even more comfortable in a European final than Liverpool. It counts for everything. Definitely this. Brilliant game management

Probably, I was talking about teams from other countries going against an English team though (it's why I mentioned Real in my hypothetical quote)

Thank fuck for Real Madrid. They may be a bunch of vile cheats but better them than “The World’s Greatest Team”
Fuck you Liverpool Football Club, in the nicest possible way, I am delighted that you lost and your incredible quadruple was in fact a rather pathetic goalless double

I see Klopp is his usual humble self in the post match presser on SSN. Proper pitiful little man when it doesn't go their way.

Michael Owen.
1. “If there’s a bit of rain about, it makes the surface wet.”
2. “What a feeling it is to be a manager and bring someone on.”
3. “Footballers these days often have to use their feet.”
4. “I love these players with two feet.”
5. “Blackburn have got two strikers on and they’re both playing up front.”
6. “Whichever team scores more goals usually wins.”
7. When asked what he listens to in the car by The Guardian: “I don’t listen to anything. I don’t know why, but the car’s always been my own quiet space. When the kids are in the car they always want a song on, but I’m just happy with my thoughts.”
8. “When they don’t score they hardly ever win.”
9. “It’s a good run, but it’s a poor run, if you know what I mean?”
10. When asked what was the last film he saw by The Guardian: “It’s very boring, but I don’t watch films. I think I’ve seen about five in my life.
“I just can’t get into them. I do try – someone will say, ‘Watch this film, it’s great,’ and I’ll try but after half an hour, 40 minutes I can’t take it any longer.”
11. When reviewing every film he has seen for Shortlist: “I like factual stuff. I don’t like being kidded by anything.
“That’s my problem with films: I just can’t believe it. I sit there, thinking, ‘I wonder how many takes that took?’ and, ‘Is that a stuntman?’
“The big action fights are so far-fetched I shake my head in disbelief: people shooting each other, rolling over with bullets just missing them, jumping off of trains. How can anyone believe that?”
12. “That shot is impossible. I saw Yaya Toure do it once.”
13. “That’s simple as…simple.”
14. Another zinger to The Guardian: “Funnily enough brie is not a cheese that I would eat on its own – it just goes well with turkey and cranberry.
“If I’m eating cheese on its own with a cracker it has to be really strong. I can handle a strong cheese. Stilton, things like that. If you’re buying mature cheese, then Canadian is probably the strongest one. Canadian extra mature, or Stilton, or anything that really stinks.
“That’s only really happened in the last five years. Before that, I preferred a milder cheese.”
15. “Alderweireld played really well last year for Tottenham, let’s hope he can transfer that form to Spurs this season.”
16. “To stay in the game, you have to stay in the game.”
17. “You have to believe your own eyes, don’t you?”

The film stuff is well reported. Baffling. Number 7 is fair enough IMO, not sure why that’s there. It is amazing just how bad so many pundits are in the UK. I watch games often with Swiss, French, German and Austrian commentary and (apart from Italian) they feel boring and dry compared to the UK but don’t have the irritating stupidity. So you can be annoyed to death or bored to death

Isn’t there a theory doing the rounds that a lot of what Owen says and does would be consistent with someone with a traits of autism or something like that?

Haven’t read the theory but it’s something that’s occurred to me several times when watching him. Some of the shit he gets is pretty mean spirited tbh, and I’m convinced a lot of it is driven by him leaving Liverpool/never quite fulfilling his England potential.

Most of those Owen quotes probably seem fine given some context and for some you can probably read what he was trying to say or talking about. Also do people blame him for not delivering for England? He was fantastic for England but injuries got the better of his later years. But he was great when fit.

I have to say when you read those it does seem slightly on the spectrum. Which would make the pisstaking unfunny and quite unfair.

Isn't assuming he's on the spectrum because he's a bit odd just as bad?

I don't see any need to make it personal, our interests in life are all boring to someone after all.
That being said I don't feel an ounce of regret for saying he's a fucking abysmal pundit and should be nowhere near a camera. His takes are almost always dreadful.
United legend though. So he's always got that going for him.

I feel kind of bad for him that he never fulfilled his potential as a player. Although round these parts the general attitude is that he took the piss and stole a living when he was playing for us (only 70 games in four years or something like that). Probably didn’t help that he was commuting in from the west coast and talked pretty openly about not liking his time with us.
As a pundit he’s pretty dull but at least he’s generally confined to match day stuff rather than deeper analysis.
