This is what 'WE SAVED FOOTBALL!!' for last year. The idea that trumpeting against and stopping the ESL was a great victory in saving the integrity of the game was some serious willfully naive bullshit.

I think simple is right, it's a poor attempt to head off an ESL.

The idea that trumpeting against and stopping the ESL was a great victory in saving the integrity of the game was some serious willfully naive bullshit. I'd argue it was a victory in the sense that ESL would potentially be even worse but yeah, something like this was pretty obviously coming once the race was on to head off a potential ESL 2 at the pass

The likes of Sky have permanently tainted the ESL after riling up the fans with all the subtlety of a brick in the face last year. None of our clubs will ever dare go down that road again and without them, it doesn't stand a chance of getting off the ground.
All the protests did was give UEFA licence to do this, and whatever the fuck else they want to do in the future.

If you want more teams and games just make bigger groups. It’s not ideal but also feels inevitable.
This is such a counterintuitive idea that reminds me of the Nations League in how convoluted it is. How can you have a league table where everyone doesn’t play everyone, it completely destroys the point of a table in the first place.
“The fight for a 24th place finish to enter the two legged play off for the knockout stages of the Champions League is ON!”

Actually, another thing: who gets bumped down to the Europa League in this setup? I'm guessing it's those in 9th-24th who lose in their playoffs, but...

Yup. Totally devalues the Europa.

I would actually be more onboard with this plan if it meant no more Europa/Conference league.
I’d still want to keep the Champions League places at 1-4 though and maybe give a spot to the winners of the FA cup or something?

Nah, not a fan of that. FA Cup winners only have to win 7 games. Disproportionate reward imo.

That was UEFA’s most stupid idea prior to today. It had its ups and downs for me. I like the "second chance" aspect of it all but it does get a bit absurd when the likes of Barcelona or Roma end up dropping down and matching with teams that could barely get in the Europa in the first place... Then again it also gives rise to the occasional David vs Goliath story Leicester and Sheriff pulled off recently (which is exactly the kind of thing a lot of people were slamming ESL for making impossible) so I don't know

I don't think the magic of the cup has been lost at all. Sure, it's mostly won by "the big 6" but not always and this year has shown plenty of upsets again. Giving a CL place to the winner might even make a big 6 winner more likely. No idea how they're going to increase places but as I say, giving a place to a club who have won 7 games and could have only played clubs in leagues below them seems disproportionate imo.

To the surprise of no one, UEFA come up with a complete pile of shite to placate the arsehole AAAAAAAA++++++ “Mega Clubs”. They really are determined to utterly ruin the game but as long as there a handful of mega rich clubs making more and more money and playing each other over and over , they’ll be happy. Fuck the lot of them into the sun.

So the big clubs will be wankers in the literal sense as well as the insulting one now?

Sanchez off now. Not sure if it's him slowing down or just being dirty but had that coming after the Thiago challenge.

Yeah, could have a few on another night.
Hope that loss focuses minds. Happy to lose that if it makes us stronger for the Prem/next round.
I thought we went through some good patches without that killer finish though in other times we would have folded.

He's got something extra to prove in these matches after all. Real sees his good performance and offers him an even better contract than they would have before, PSG then counters with an even more ridiculous salary to retain him... Either way this is basically his new contract being drawn up in this matchup

Carvajal booked, Who'd have guessed.....
... and a sloppy equaliser.

Class from Donnarumma. Tries to dribble Benzema in his own box, loses completely, gets angry at teammates for not being free to receive the ball Just twat it out of the stadium in that case, would be better than this

Would love a Real Madrid equaliser - another half hour of this would be much appreciated.

PSG bottling it again? 😀
Can't stand either team, but it's been a decent match. Things will get spicy now!

Can’t believe Real Madrid, one of the most historically important teams of all time, has fucking goal music. Embarrassing. They belong in a shitty Super League.
