McFred are literally the best combination in midfield out of the options he has. That may not be good enough but I think most of our better performances are with the two of them in the team. How would we know when he almost never plays anyone else? And I'm not sure which midfield you've been watching. Performances like tonight occur in spite of those two, not because of them. They're as bad a centre midfield - over and over and over again - as I've seen play for United since I've been watching them. Who played in central midfield at the weekend? Didn’t go well from memory

He could have fucking Kante in that beloved double pivot of his and we'd still be an abysmal football side. The issue ain't the players, it's the berks telling them what they should be doing.

Didn't we come back from 0-2 against Newcastle shortly before Mourinho was sacked? Shortly as in a few weeks, it gave him a few weeks.
This feels like that...

He could have fucking Kante in that beloved double pivot of his and we'd still be an abysmal football side. The issue ain't the players, it's the berks telling them what they should be doing. Right. In answer to the question, Matic (who's been 3 yards off the pace for two years) and Pogba (who's not in any way defensive minded), in the good old double pivot. For me, it's the rigid adherence to the formation that annoys me. Neither Fred nor McTominay is suited to it. They may be the best we have for that formation, but that doesn't mean it's a good choice. Do Chelsea play it: (answer: no). Do City? (no). Liverpool? (no). And arguably, they do have the players that make it work. I understand that we're trying to fit in our plethora of attacking flair, but playing that formation we're getting consistently overrun. Fred obviously has ability. You can't coach talent into someone, but you should be able to coach them into not making so many mistakes. McTominay, to my mind, is better going forward, when he makes those late runs, than he is sitting deep and reading the game and winning the ball. He's not Keane, to make a saving tackle then drive forward and he's not Carrick who could read, intercept the ball and recycle play. What's that quote? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting different results? We've had a couple of good results against really poor sides this season (Leeds, Newcastle) where we looked better, but other than that, our midfield has been repeatedly overrun. Fred has played 6 of 8 in the league this season, and a couple of times in Europe and McTominay mostly by his side, barring an early injury and it's usually the same result. A frustrating performance, midfield ineffective, reliant on a superstar performance to drag us through and when it doesn't happen, defeat. I'm a fan of the spirit and drive the team show to get back into games, but we shouldn't be going behind in the first place so often. Maybe it's time to try something else (anyone remember 4-4-2?) and harness the spirit from the start?

I do think the next few league games will decide it. Liverpool Tottenham and Man City. Lose all of those and there will be real pressure. Otherwise it think he will be here for the rest of the season. The other thing I guess we need to consider is who is available as a long term replacement right now?
I must admit it is becoming increasingly apparent that he has taken us as far as possible and is miles behind the top managers in the league but managers of that calibre are not aesthetically to find and there is no point getting another stop gap.

after 5 mins last night we were trying to play on the counter attack, at home against Atalanta...
We are a lost cause with this management
Also “maguire has been consistently great” 😂😂😂😂

It'll carry on until Champions League football is mathematically out of the equation I reckon.

Could be worse, you could be reminded that just 6 years ago we beat Bayern at home. Now we are out of Europe entirely. The demise begun under Arsene, and we had to move on, but Christ that's depressing.

Surely it's a problem for Man Utd that they're only playing two in midfield? They were literally playing as a 4-2-4, it doesn't matter how good the central players are you just need to outnumber them.

Chelsea really quite boringly good, aren’t they? Just read they have 9 more clean sheets across all competitions that the next side in a top league in Europe.
Interested to see how Rashford and Ronaldo combine in our game. And if Pogba can perform from deep in this formation.

Some real De Gea lols there, despite the deflection. Not sure what the long wait for VAR was.

Don't Frog, now anytime Maguire does anything he'll bring you up too.
"Where are those real Maguire fans now, eh?" etc.
