Couple of things from the last few posts I need to look into. Lantern - I don't have one and it would have been very handy on a recent exploration. Messages - I didn't realise you could do this via the pouch - handy tip. Map Markers - Can you change these to look different (someone mentioned, person, skull etc.). I've put a few down, but not sure I'd want too many clogging up the map and HUD though. And yes, work and responsibilities suck

Welp. Game just sent my ps5 into rest mode. Thankfully didn’t lose any progress. I think I just about explored most of west limgrave now. A few mini bosses I left as feel I’m slightly under levelled but time to move onwards through the gate.

Just laid a few down to remind of unfinished areas/boss fights.

Rob, you can buy the lantern from a few merchants. You'll come across one eventually so don't worry. I can't actually recall exactly where one is that sells it. I keep losing track of them all!
Map markers. You're thinking of waypoint markers which are the blue beacon things. You can place a map marker by opening your map and pressing square, then choosing an icon. I've started doing it and wish I'd done earlier. Would have kept better track of these merchants!

Also. Why the fuck have I only just started doing guard counters. They are lethal! Also also, a note re: catacombs / mines etc - Catacombs are specifically geared towards your spirit summons. You'll get new Spirit Ashes down there, as well as Gravewort, which is used by a lady at the Hold to upgrade said ashes. You'll find ashes out in the wild as well mind you, but the gravewort you need to upgrade them seems to mainly be in the catacombs. Mines seem to be geared towards upgrade mats and you'll find quite a few smithing stones in there.

This is the best game ever. I can’t believe it’s real, it’s all I ever wanted from life. I'm the same man. Honestly. At 40 years old I feel a bit ridiculous to be gushing so much over a video game, but it is hands down the best game I have ever played.
Also. How fucking cool is that title music when it kicks in.

Re map markers - I wish I had known this earlier! I need to go back and find that merchant in Mistwood as he was a bit remote. I think I only know of 3 others and I know where they are all are. No wait, 4. I'd know if I'd put bloody markers down.

One more post and then I'll shut up, but galloping through the lake of Liurnia, in the mist, with black rider looking twats about the place is literally just heaven . If No Mans Sky was touted as being a game built around sci-fi covers of yesteryear, then Elden Ring is the embodiment of every fantasy book cover I've ever read. Everywhere you turn there's something new to spam the screenshot button.

Yeah the pouch is great for Torrent etc. I've got my Telescope and Lantern also bound to it. Gah, I'm absolutely itching to get back on it. Damn you, work! Damn you *shakes fist* Oooh, there's a lantern!? That's some Dragon's Dogma vibes right there. Also, does anyone know how to use extra pouch slots? I appear to have 6 slots, but only 4 are assigned to a d-pad direction?? Not sure what the other two are for other than easier access via the start menu options.

Sorry if me suicida - I'm trying to be extra careful, but most people seem to be quite far ahead of me anyway. I'm lucky that I will have probably forgotten everything I have read by the time I actually get there

Nah, it's ladies impaled to walls, black riders in lakes, villages I haven't been to. I'm at work anyway so shouldn't really be checking FG

Only a few hours in, mostly running away, some killing some minor levelling up, but is there a point when you stop chugging healing draughts when trying to pick stuff up?
This Y to do stuff instead of X thing is really messing up my game muscle memory.

I'm happy to spoiler pretty much everything I'm gushing about though.

I'm loving the love for this game. It's to my mind - so far - the finest Soulsborne by some margin. It just keeps on surprising me. I'll keep it vague - I appreciate the reminders re: spoilers, as the game is so enjoyable when you just stumble across stuff. But I do want to say something about the Weapon Art I'm using and how I can't quite believe how OP it is - in a good way, I am happy to slice through the toughest enemies with the minimum of skill. Bloody Slash is absolutely incredible. I don't quite understand why it's so powerful. I'm using a mix of sorcery and the starting weapon I received - a short sword, that's now a Keen Short Sword +10. Because I have quite a lot of FP (Mind is 23 right now), Bloody Slash only uses a tiny fraction but decimates invaders and bosses: I've taken 1/5 to 1/4 off health bars with a successful slash. You just need to time it correctly - not too difficult.

I’m off work this week and the wife is still at work today so I start today with renewed hope after a successful day yesterday. Just getting past Godrick alone is a major achievement for me. He took me so long to beat but got that same old souls feeling when you finally beat him.
Managed a few other optional bosses and a night time only boss as well (not the black horseman).

I wish he saw a good camera as a feature 😅 Ha, yeah. Those Watchdog bosses in the catacombs, with their big slow jump, always fuck my camera up so I roll the wrong way and get squashed.

As ever, I find myself wondering how to get myself as excited by this as you lot. I fear it might be a game that only/mainly works if you plough disgusting amounts of time into it. I saw someone mention a Vigor of 25 above. Mine is 14. My highest stat is 16. And I pretty much mainlined the game over the weekend. :-D
Shit that other games get pilloried for just seem to get a pass here. Bad clipping. Pre-2010 era 3D models and textures in a lot of places. Framerate that's all over the fucking shop, etc. etc. etc. My fault on that last one for playing on Series X, obvs. It's definitely beautiful in places, but even amongst you fans it's "good looking for a From game" which is telling.
But I do loves me an open world, and exploration. The fact that pissing off is an option elevates this above any of the Souls games I've played, but thus far I think I preferred the Sekiro combat. But then, that wasn't really an RPG so the comparison isn't fair.
So yeah - looking forward to unwrapping its secrets (or about 20% of them compared to you lot) and grinding levels to get through the bosses. Still waiting for it to get its claws in. My overriding thought right now is that Dragon's Dogma got there first (ish) and in some ways better, it had the same Japanese weird take on Western fantasy, the oddness, the imagination, and so on. I think I'm going to enjoy taking on some of the smaller bits of content more than the hero storyline in Elden Ring. Found a keep last night that's well guarded, and clearing that is going to take a couple of evenings at least. It's for sure not boring!
Plenty of entertainment then, but not yet the second coming for me. #DebbieDowner
Anyway, PRAISE THE NUN or whatever you people say.

I'm still unsure about all the co-op shenanigans. I've managed to get summoned to help with a boss but how do I get summons to help ME with a boss. Confused with all the fingering

Yes, Dragons Dogma is the feeling I get from this too! It’s like that but miles bigger and just as shonky, but lacking a bit of the personality.

I'm still unsure about all the co-op shenanigans. I've managed to get summoned to help with a boss but how do I get summons to help ME with a boss. Confused with all the fingering There's a consumable that you can craft or buy, the furlcalling finger remedy. Craft it with only two erdleaf flowers. Use that and, similar to the beckoning bell in Bloodborne, it will stay active until you either summon players, or die. You can then see summon signs in areas that are co-op friendly (mainly near those little statues with the crescent above them which is all dungeons / catacombs etc and throughout the longer souls levels). There's a button you can press on your map screen that can show you co-op / invasion areas.

Confused with all the fingering There's an item you need to use to make the signs visible. Can't remember what it's called but you can craft it from 2 of the gold flowers that grow everywhere.

Anyone else turned off all the online stuff?
Couldn't get on all weekend and then when I finally did I found all the signs, phantoms and bloodstains broke the immersion (and ended up turning them off).
Never bothered be in a previous Souls game but with this I want as 'clean' a run as possible for the first one.

I was in a bugged dungeon last night (still there I guess), the Stake of Marika doesn't work. Instead of respawning outside the boss room it dumps you at the entrance. It only takes a minute or two to run it, but by God it's annoying now I'm used to quick respawn. Annoying boss fight as well it was the Minor Erd Tree Catacombs, you end up fighting two of those weird jerky statues at the same time. I've never lost to one on its own, or with adds, but two together I lose my shit. Even if I manage to split them all my timing just goes.

PhattsoI can understand the negatives, old 3D models, pop in of textures, trees etc, choppy framerate. I do think if you have not got on with DS games in the past, you will still struggle to get into this. I'm just astounded at the scale of this game and the freedom it offers compared to previous games.
