Took myself off in opposite directions to the network test, have beaten a couple of mini-bosses, found and beaten my first evergoal beast , found that pesky trap chest and discovered a fucking scary red skyed landscaped area after escaping the cave of fucked up fucking hard bastards and made my way to the island š Fucking love this game. About six hours played and levelled a fair bit, but planning to take my time.

How the fuck do you activate the Ashes on a weapon? Took me a bastard age to figure this out. L2. Wasn't working for me because I had my shield equipped and it kept parrying. Once switched to my staff in my left hand it worked fine.

Tip for those wanting to use weapon Ashes but who are using a shield in their offhand: find a shield without a power/parry skill, that way L2 will do your weapon skill without you needing to faff around switching to two-handed mode.

There's also an Ashes for nothing so once you have that can make any shield not parry so you can weapon art one handed.

What does it mean when a little ghost door symbol appears on the left of the screen?

What does it mean when a little ghost door symbol appears on the left of the screen? I believe it means you can use summons in that particular area.

I was getting that even when set to launch offline yesterday. I might've confused it by inspecting one of the little statues though

The trouble I've got is that no weapon I've found so far is as good as the broadsword and I can see myself finishing the game with the Confessor's starting weapon
The shield-break R1 and running thrust R2 are just too good

I've even left a message outside the cave entrance, something like "Merchant ahead but liar 'o liar" š. If you've set the FG group password (which is simply FG) you're more likely to see my sign or it'll have a fancy glow or something! Iām stood right there and I set password to FG and I still donāt see it Can I suggest adding FG as a group password as well as the multiplayer password, for anyone who hasnāt done that already? The menu info says the multiplayer password is for matching- itās the group password that makes you see messages, summon signs etc

Can anyone explain the ashes to me please?
Iāve got a +1 uchi and a couple of ashes. Neither improve the stats of my weapon so I guess itās not worth putting them on, but should I find a good one how do they work? Is it a permanent change? Is the ash ability a timed thing, and is it one use per life?

The starting weapons often are the best. I haven't used the broadsword, but I would say that it actually looks like Elden Ring does a better job of encouraging you to use other weapons. They've really gone all out with the abilities attached to weapons. The weapons you can get from Goddrick look incredible and I expect othe bosses are the same. The weapon I'm using is from an optional mini-boss and it is great and been tempted by a couple of other mini-boss weapons. The ashes allowing you to apply a different ability on a weapon is also a good touch for letting you customise your weapons.

There is also an item that lets you choose which type it becomes when you apply an ash. Can't recall what it is called, but think I found it in a church. I had option of about 6 different types, such as heavy, keen and faith, when applying an ash to my uchi.

Fair enough, I wasn't really sure about the difference.
In the meantime, Frank Dux is still valiantly bashing his sword against Margit. I've managed to get him to 25% once, but it all goes to hell as soon as the hammer comes out.

Hmmm, without inviting anything too spoiler-heavy, have I fundamentally missed something with the spirit summons? I have three now but still can't use any of them. I'd presumed I was missing a catalyst/talisman like item (ala other Souls games), which I thought maybe I'd get after Margrit etc. (whom I still haven't yet killed), but reading ryanclayton 's post above seems like I should be able to use them pre-Maggie?

Finally entered margits house and gave it a few goes. He really does go hard once the hammer is out. Figured Iāve lots to explore in other directions, found two thing Iāve seen in trailers: the pot boy stuck in the ground, seems like heāll be like a sigmeyer character maybe. Also the big building with legs š¦µ š¦µ š¦µ š¦µ - donāt know how to get up there or how to smack it down yet but Iāve bought a note on it that I now realise Iāve not read yet.

You may not have enough mana to summon them. Or you are trying to do it when the white archway thing isn't in the bottom left corner

You need a bell that you will get generally from resting at night. I got it from resting at night at the church right next to where you start the game.
