Hah, that secret boss was amazing. Right up my street. Loved it. fingers! That reminds me, did you find a dungeon anywhere in the Abyssal Woods when you went? I haven't been there yet myself, but I think there's a far more secret boss than the one with a whole questline tied to it...

Oh heartbreaker.
Yes there is something worth finding in there junior.

There's definitely some frustration here because a lot of his attack seem to have this 1/20 or so chance of just randomly hitting me despite me handling them the same way I normally do.

Duff, do you know about the debuff and removing it to stop the grab insta killing you if you have it?

The grab never really hits me, but I didn't know you could get rid of it.

Don't need to worry if it's not hitting you. It often gets me the first time but never got hit the second.

My main cause of death is just chip damage from the AoE spam. It's very easy to avoid his swings, it's near impossible to not get hit by the AoE. Usually it's OK, but there's an inevitable point where the game decides that it's not going to do a pause between combos like it normally does, I commit to an attack because 95% of the time there's an opening there, and that's it.
But yeah, the grab is probably the easiest attack to avoid tbh. It's basically a free heal/attack window.

It’s the only heal window haha. The one that pissed me off the most for ages were the purple attacks, all of them, but after helping for so f’ing long I finally figured out have to avoid most of them. There’s still a few attacks where if you are standing in the wrong place you gonna get hit no matter what you do.

Died with even less on his health bar this time... to the fucking air rock attack. Which also never fucking hits me. Apart from then. Sheesh.

Me and Barry no.2 nailed Messmer first go. Could have been luck. We had Bayle down to a sixth as well but will go back for him later. Right. Can’t be long left.

Fuck yeah All bosses done summonless apart from one where you were obviously meant to use it because it's part of the fight. Now for NG+ where I will abuse the ever loving shit out of every ash possible

Good job. First you should help those countless poor souls stuck on the last boss. You get summoned there within about 3 seconds as so many people are stuck there.

I don't know if I'd be able to do with without the sekiro hardtear tbh. The first phase for sure, but it's so difficult to keep up with and see what's going on in the second. I ended up chucking on the biggest, bonkiest hammer I had, all the defensive buffs possible and using the chunkiest single hit attacks there are. Only real way I was gonna get through, but glad I did.

I’ve now opened up the final area but I’m exploring the fissure which is yet another cool looking area.

Hopped back over to the main game last night. Someone mentioned the Valiant Gargoyles on here and that reminded me that I had given up fighting them. Decided to go back and I was able to absolutely destroy with no real difficulty. Don't remember encountering them last time around, so another achievement unlocked.
Took the coffin through to the Deeproot Depths. I remember coming here before, but not sure what the alternative entrance is. Also don't think I ran into Fia's Companions last time. Another fairly straightforward fight, likely because I'm hugely over levelled for this area. Each went down in 3 or 4 hits.
Next up on my hit list was Malenia. Again, never beat her in my original play through. Took maybe 4 attempts, but managed to absolutely wreck her. Just went in (with my mimic) really aggressively during the second phase. Maybe it is just by comparison with the DLC bosses, bit she actually felt really straightforward, with just the healing that was a bit of a problem (would love to know how much total damage I actual did). Not sure if a patch toned it down, but she didn't do the waterfowl dance move as regularly as I remember her doing it before, a move that I never worked out how to deal with and pretty much always killed. I saw her do it maybe 3 or 4 times across my attempts and must of those were against my mimic.
Will probably head back to the Land of Shadows next time. Still a small piece of the map that I haven't found, but think I will see if I can find where to use the item I got from Messmer next.

You are probably quite overlevelled for the main game just now.

There’s still a few attacks where if you are standing in the wrong place you gonna get hit no matter what you do. Reading back - there were a few other reliable heal windows I found. One was immediately after he goes for the air rock sling - just after he takes off you've got plenty of time for a chug before the rocks start coming, and during the windup for the huge AoE which I ended up just blocking each time. Otherwise though, the heals are basically having to make a choice between getting a hit in or chugging.

You are probably quite overlevelled for the main game just now. I would need to check, but I would think I'm probably at about the level I was when I finished the game with my original character. I wasn't at the end game with this character, just reaching Farum Azula. I was around level 120 when I started the DLC and think I'm likely around 140-150 now, maybe a little higher.

Another boss down before work. I very much enjoyed that one, and the short area that lead up to it. I especially enjoyed what came after, although I did have to look it up, because there is, quite frankly, no way I would have figured that out myself.
The actual boss arena was surely a deliberate nod. There's no way they just reused that environment and hoped it would go unnoticed. I had bloody palpitations when I landed in it. Thankfully the boss wasn't as bad as the ptsd was leading me to belive.

I have to say, apart from Rellana, I don't think there's any boss that's been as bad as I was expecting so far. Obviously I've not met the final boss yet but so far everything has been beaten in 1-3 goes. Granted I'm relying on Barry No.2 as usual, but I know the limits to my patience these days, so that's fine. I also didn't expect so many secret areas and bosses overall. There's been FAR more than I thought there would be. My favourites so far include but are not limited to: Giant Sunflowers! Fingers! (this may be my favourite boss design of all time) Orphan of Kos on Horseback! Dancing Lion!

Dragon Hunter's Great Katana +10 had a lot to do with it. Barry No.2 having it as well meant there were two of it's Ash of Wars being pummelled into Messhead at anyone time and that thing absolutely destroys. It also, funnily enough as it's name suggests, wrecks Dragons.

I had to google the horse one as hadn’t found that. Not sure I would have ever found that.

Wunty clearly in the bizarro world of From games, with views on DS2 and liking the Lion boss . Rellana was also one of the easier bosses for me!

That big fire giant thing is scary. I've nfi how you're meant to kill it, it just explodes everywhere constantly.

It really looks like there's no way to avoid the stomping fire, but actually only the flame front hurts you, if you jump over that the "afterburn" won't hurt you. Might be useful to remember in some other parts of this DLC too.

One thing this DLC has driven home is that even after sinking well north of 100 hours into this I have no fucking idea what’s going on and who anyone is. The story is absolutely nonsensical.

You can dodge the fire stomp, but think the timing has to be incredibly precise. I managed to do it 3 times in a row once almost right under its feet when I ran out of flasks to revive the horse and do his double jump over the flames. Thought I finally nailed the timing and then couldn't repeat it again.
I've given up fighting them, to be honest. They are really tedious to fight melee and it takes forever of just hacking at its feet. Only element of the open world sections that I've disliked.

Yeah, I had the sense of "I don't know what I'm meant to be doing or where I'm meant to be going". The base game while opaque as fuck still had points where it gave you information in it's own garbled way of what you were meant to be doing.
