And, yeah, I’ve quit dual wielding and have a shield for bosses. Half a dozen perfect dodge rolls is beyond what I can be arsed with.

I don't think much has changed from OG ER. Yes, things hit harder and bosses have a ridiculous amount of attack moves but the game encourages you to think differently about loadouts or weapons when you are stuck. That's not changed from the base game imo.

Speaking of blocking, the hardtear you get from the first brazier golem thing is worth trying out. There's not a ton of feedback that it's working, but basically if you do a block just before an attack hits, you'll reduce the stamina cost of blocking that attack to something like 5% of normal. I don't think much has changed from OG ER. Yes, things hit harder and bosses have a ridiculous amount of attack moves but the game encourages you to think differently about loadouts or weapons when you are stuck. That's not changed from the base game imo. I agree it's basically more of what the late game base game did, but I don't really agree that it makes you think about loadouts that much. If anything it's getting pretty prescriptive about it and narrowing what you can use that works IMO.

I actually think blocking is stealth quite good against these bosses - I chucked on a greatshield talisman for the 20% stamina cost reduction and an eclipse greatshield and you can get away with a lot. DLC feels like your only real option is big bonk weapons though, which IMO is a weakness. When everything is loooooong attack strings, with little downtime, if you've got a faster, less damaging weapon you're fucked. You want as much damage output in your one attack you get to make as possible. Do you know what. I respecced recently, adding a lot more into STR to get a more more dex leaning quality build going on and completely forgot that will now allow me to wield a greatshield.
Hmmmm.

That's not changed from the base game imo. I’m too stubborn. Haven’t used any of the new items at all and just hit my head against a wall until the boss dies. I used to rock Havel armour and great shield style but for some reason in er I’ve always just dodged even on my first strength build. Hardly touched shields in this. I have found a new katana though that I’ve read is pretty op so I might try that, I’ve certainly found enough upgrade stones to max out a few of the new weapons.

Weapons are dropping left, right and center. I don‘t suppose larval tears are farmable yet?
I have a pretty effective build I think*, but I am a bit bored of it. I‘d love to try other stuff, but without unlimited supply of tears (and smithing tools), I am hesitant.
*a big shield, a colossal sword, and guard-counter as my main method of attacking

I recommend the eclipse crest greatshield - it comes in at 15 weight which is obviously still quite a lot, but is comparatively little compared to stuff like the fingerprint shield. And has 100 phys resist, and 72/57/51/59 on the various elemental types plus 75 guard boost at max level. Stick on the + drop chance talisman and the new consumable and kill the dude in front of black knife catacombs 3m from the grace site until you get it.
I swapped on some lighter armour (comparatively lighter anyway, I'm running the arsenal charm and malekith's set) and having a decent run with it and a big bonk hammer.

I have it at +9 and yeah, it's ash of war is just stupid. I actually forgot about it once I equipped the flail again. I was dual wielding it with the great katana I found.

I know the very one! I think I have it. If not on this char I know the very man of which you speak and will head there later. This alongside the aformentioned dragon great katana and it may well shake things up a bit.

peacemakerI generally play 80% with same style but it can be just a case of changing talismans, wonderous physics etc. I also like to have another weapon with different specs or weapon ashes. It may be due to playing a sorcerer primarily on my first playthrough (now a big stick guy) but I realised quite quickly some bosses were just shit with magic alone. I mixed things up with a claymore magicked up with frost and changed ashes suitably.

It’s good against the amazing boss I mentioned. Of course I remembered this after I struggled with the boss. I read a description of an item then two hours of gaming later I’ve totally forgotten that I had it. I the main game I had to beat the snake god without the spear as I never even read the description!!!

Yeah when I picked it up and read the description I thought that it would certainly come in handy against a certain type of boss. I don't normally bother with reading descriptions of new items but this new inventory thing that makes it dead easy to see what you've just picked up means I'm doing it more.

Not farmable that I know of but you need to look around at night for the lit grave circles - think they’re blue ish and there’s a tear in the middle of each. There’s a few similar locations dotted around apparently

I know I keep banging on about it but getting rid of that shit and making respeccing free would have been a huge QoL upgrade. And refunding upgrade stones on weapons.

Agreed on both,, it’s such a missed opportunity, in a game as big as this.
How am I supposed to compare weapons in their basic state against my +25 colossal sword?

From what I was playing up to last night I'm really into this. It's got it's insane amount of bullshit tbf which I've had to grumble about such as a having an extremely large enemy in a very enclosed space where the camera doesn't know what to do with it. Little things like that. But overall I've really enjoyed what one played.

Talking of insane amounts of bullshit, I’ve just got to Messi the Imp. He’s a right cunt and then some I’m off to research Scud and Revered shards, because he’s not going down any time soon. Edit Nanocrystal - I’d invest in a Resident Evil rocket launcher for 5million runes for those special bosses. Accept no substitute etc

I have so many materials I think I can still comfortably +25 another 7 or 8 weapons. Need a couple of ancient somber dragon stones mind you for +10'ing a couple of others.

They should make the upgrades just apply to weapons as a whole. Give you a weaponcraft skill that you upgrade that you apply to all weapons. Or if that's to much let you level curved swords so you can try a different one each time you find one.
Would open the sandbox up no end.

Like most of these games, levelling your weapons is cool until it stops being a progress mechanic and becomes mandatory and I think if you’re in the DLC you should be finding at +24/+9 weapons or something.
I think, really, my complaint is that as an experienced player I want every layer of friction removed when it stops being a core part of the story/campaign experience and starts just being a chore.

I'm sure the Souls games had you finding +levelled weapons in DLC areas, but that may just be a fever dream.
Edit: Yup Dark Souls 2 definitely had that. Another reason why it's the best.

The one Remembrance weapon we got definitely need to be upgraded, at least, and I'm fairly certain other new weapons DadFE's found lying around were not at max level either...

Same with the ashes, just have us level up ash usage so we can try them all out, you can even make it harder to get to +10. It would make for a better game.
I would be using different ones all the time until shit got serious and the mimic came out to be better at the game than I am.

What is it with putting all these base enemies who just seem to have infinite stamina and just do spinning combos forever?!
