The Moonveil Katana is a great dex/int weapon if I remember correctly! I definitely second this. I used it for most of my playthrough. Wing of Astel is also worth trying, but you probably won’t get that until a bit later. Parrying… I confess I never really bothered to learn how to do it well. I often played with a sword and staff combo, relaying on the dodge roll to get me out of trouble rather than blocking or parrying. If you’re a magic user, you probably want to keep your distance so you can wind up the big spells, and the sword is for grunts and the occasional emergency. Spirit Ash Summons are also definitely your friend - great for distracting bosses and big enemies while you use your magic.

For my current playthrough I decided to go light load and claws only (except fists as secondary when I want strike damage), and back then I thought of this as a bit of a challenge run. How wrong I was, good grief the damage and all the blood!
I originally went for no magic, but then again I did that on previous PTs already, and what the heck, let's just put Bloodflame Blade on them already! Turned out very enjoyable indeed. To me that is, not so much to poor Radahn and the Putrid Tree Spirit in the catacombs nearby.

I have beaten the gargoyles! Took me quite a few tries but they are now dust.
I've also been running around the deeproot depths on my horse picking up smithing stones and think I can now get my Moonveil/poker up to 6 or 7. I've now taken a break from the underground to go up to Atlus finally. Took the back route. Ran away from a dragon. Pouring a whisky and now for a bit of exploring.
Also the poker is awesome! Explosions!

Wow so I went up to explore Altus and it is massive! It's actually insane how big this world is. Someone offered to take me to volcano manor but that sounds risky so I think I'll stick around here for now. Love that the troll things appear to be regular mobs now. Also thought I'd got away from poison swamps for a bit but then obviously found a castle sat on another swamp.
I've still got the feeling there's enough of the world opened up right now to not need to bang my head against difficult bits and it feels as fresh as the opening segments in Limgrave, Liurnia etc. I'd been worried by a lot of comments that it just gets too tough in the end game but so far so good (appreciate I'm nowhere near the end yet).
Loving the poker thing Danno btw glad I branched out for a bit!

Ended up playing this for almost three hours straight last night. I was up till almost midnight. Normally go to bed at 10 these days haha. Rock n roll! I went from being really frustrated and feeling the need to not really replay it again and deleting it to making a mini breakthrough, leveled up a few levels and compulsively searching everywhere. The true souls formula I guess!

I’m continuing to bounce around and avoid the main quest. Last night I made it to Sellen Crystal Tunnel but the normal way, not the oh-shit-I-teleported way that’s most people’s first experience of it. I was trying to find my way up to Dragonbarrow from Siofra via Caelid, but couldn’t work out if there was a way through.
Anyway I could cope with the miners and pests but not the boss (yet), so then I found the Gael tunnel and started working through it to get to the boss there for that sweet, sweet Moonveil. Still haven’t done any evergaols or catacombs, or gone to Stormveil, so I’ve got all that to look forward to!

I’ve been loving this game but the Consecrated Snowfield is dog shit. I followed a guide for it and just did the bits with loot I wanted. It was confusing as hell at first, and only seeing 3 feet in front of you while being attacked by a huge translucent dragonkin soldier felt… cheap, for a From game.

They keep bringing back poison swamps because everyone loves them, might as well bring back Frigid Outskirts because everyone loved that

With such a low draw distance it was impossible to tell whether you’d fall to your death or drop three feet when trying to get around. And the Mausoleum-with-tactical-nukes can also go fuck itself. Still. Just spanked Astel who was a pain in my arse at first.

Ha! Yes, I never got that mausoleum. Tried a few times, then gave it up and moved on.

That mausoleum is fine once you’re up close, it’s just getting there that’s a pain. And there’s a grace just behind it that’s also a better staging point for taking on the deathbird in that area.

I tried beating the Gael Magma Wyrm this afternoon, but my spells and flail were both doing teeny tiny damage. So now I’ve grabbed the Nightrider Flail and I’m levelling my DEX to 24 so I can use it.
Also interested in trying the cross naginata and maybe the Erdtree halbard I just picked up, but both require a bit more strength than I have. Do people still put their strength up to around 20 for DEX builds? That seems high, but it looks like I’m locked out of quite a few dex-scaling weapons without it.

Looking forward to getting back into this when the expansion hits.
Just need an excuse to buy it on pc (already got it on Xbox) as I can see it eating a lot of time via the steam deck....

hedben - I teleported to Gurranq the beast clergyman, but can’t remember where from (sorry). It’s a very useful location to reach parts of Caelid and get some good loot like Lennes Rise edit: it’s tucked away in the water behind the Third Church of Marika I have my strength at 20. I like the brass shield which needs 16 and just add a few more, but mainly focus on Dex

loto thanks, I did it the hard way. Galloped all the way to Farum Greatbridge from West Limgrave and then smashed a few Vulgar Militia when I got there - still a great rune farming spot! I’ve now got a Keen Nightrider Flail and not enough smithing stones to get it past +2, so I’ve jumped back* to the main path to get to Raya Lucaria and the first bell bearing. *beat Margit first try, no big deal

You just round up the wolves and a crow and lead them into the soldiers. Sit on a nearby rock for a few mins and watch the cashrunes roll in. I can post a vid if needed

Can you do Radahn before the main quest too? I figured he must be locked away in the early game, but yeah I’d read about that spot too.
I’m over-levelled for Stormveil now, these enemies are dropping peanuts compared to the ones in Caelid, but I’m just pushing through to get to Liurnia and the academy for all the good spells.
Edit- ok it’s pre-Radahn but starts from his castle, got it

hedben - I think you can, but you have to clear Redmane castle first if you go earlier, and it’s not an easy area I just did Stormveil myself this morning, over levelled too. I followed a guide as there’s some parts I never found on my main, including a tough-ish boss in the basement I also need to upgrade my flail for when I come up against a Crystalline enemy. Slash/regular damage is no good for them, and they don’t bleed. Good luck

Ah, the good times when I had to open inventory in the middle of the boss fight and scramble to find something blunt because I walked into a Crystalian with only a katana and my catalyst equipped

If you stagger the crystal sisters they then take normal damage, but you need to get in a few big hits to break them!

Radahn is optional, can do the main quest without him. He's more tied up with Ranni's quest, which you can stuff up if you do him too early.

I'm fairly certain that the only thing killing Radahn does that affects Ranni's questline is opening up the hole to Nokron... And Blaidd is temporarily unavailable for the questline if he's waiting for the Radahn festival, but that's pretty much it Edit: okay, so Blaidd may disappear after the fight because he's trapped in an Evergaol but the rest of the questline (Fingerslayer Blade and on) should still be doable AFAIK

I made it to Liurnia this morning- Stormhill castle was more confusing than I remember, I’m sure I did it in a silly order. Made a mental note to go back to the seed beast under the castle later, I skipped it because I’m still trying to get to the Academy for the sorcery stuff. Godrick wasn’t much trouble this time.
I ate his remembrance because I don’t need strength weapons- it still felt really wrong though. My first playthrough I’d still pick a weapon even if I never used it.

Technically not a boss until Elden Ring... If it's about number of (revive) phases I think Sister Friede wins, she gets back up twice
Either her or Ornstein and his various "basically Ornstein" incarnations

This game! It's absolutely cracking though I'm loving it. I was up in Altus and there were these laughing women so obviously went to see what was happening and got twatted in the head by one of them when she whipped out a giant hammer. Also the weird frog things down in the depths where I started building up what I thought was the poison resist bar and then died instantly from a giant stake coming out of the ground. It does make me laugh.
