FFS, the video explaining how to even get to Nokstella is 4 minutes long. And I haven’t done a bunch of stuff in Siofra either (eg. the gargoyles) or Darkroot Basin. At least I should be a bit over-levelled by now so I can deal with the enemies ok…

IIRC there is an in game event that opens that bit of the Underworld and all you really need to know is roughly where on the map to go, and then it’s all very straightforward from there.

Yep I’m on it- I’d already grabbed whatever doohickey I needed, and I’ve now swapped it for an upside-down statue, I know where I’m headed next.

So I only stopped playing this because I moved house a month after release. I picked it back up again last week and it's been painful to relearn but also I don't think there's a better game out there.
I was stood outside Caria Manor with no memory of events and about 40 hours on my save. It is HARD to figure out all of the systems after a near two year break!
I had a night flail and hoarfrost stomp equipped which I think was my last achievement before house move - from memory this was overpowered and everyone on here was singing it's praises. I imagine everything is rebalanced since then... Anyway I spent a few hours getting killed by everything trying to remember what I was doing.
I had to Google how to upgrade ashes, weapons, figure out what runes were for, how to equip/activate (Godrick's great rune), what I was doing and where to go. I'd done the Academy also. So I've been cleaning up around the lakes before I try going underground. It looks scary.
Great to be back!

I don’t think a game will beat it this generation for imagination, scope and playability.

It’s really special- I had a similar situation, I must have been absent for about a year, and while I was fine in combat, I didn’t have a clue how to apply new weapon ashes, what remembrances were for or where I meant to go next. But I’ve been using a video guide (Fighting Cowboy) and clearing out some stuff I’d missed, and if anything I’m more hooked now than I was before. Plus I also had my own list of “do this later” saved to my phone… and it’s great going back to places and bosses that bested me before, and absolutely smashing them now with my Lv140 STR 50 juggernaut. Hundreds of hours and I’ve barely touched Magic or DEX weapons- think I’ll start another run rather than re-spec though

I don’t think a game will beat it this generation for imagination, scope and playability. We do have Baldur's Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom, depending on who you ask... But honestly let's just be happy we got all three so close to each other

All 3 are great, spoilt really to have 3 games likes this.
I love ER for its souls combat with accessibility and amazing open world and exploration. Also the subtle world building and fine detail in the environmental story telling, item descriptions etc.
There can’t be that many other franchises where you can find multiple YouTube channels with 30 plus hours of videos going into the lore and history in the game, putting all the fragments together and coming up with theories.
Never really watched many before but I saw one about Ranni which blew me away by how much of the detail I was totally oblivious too or just missed completely.

Lol - they certainly do
I’d need to win the lottery, but my man cave would have that and Glamdring on the wall, behind a full size Stormtrooper

I beat Mohg last night in his palace, and I’d already done most of Farum Azula before switching to mop up a load of stuff I’d missed, so I feel like I’m on the home stretch! How many hours do we reckon it will take to do Dragonlord Plavidusax —> Haligtree —> Malenia —> Maliketh —> Elden Beast ?? I have a long night this evening, because of a work thing I need to check at 1am. I’ll probably get to Malenia, but not holding my breath for anything beyond

Depends how good you are. Malenia and Malekith took me a few sessions each to down...

If you're level 140 then any of the bosses should be a piece of cake. I think I was less than 140 and did Melania second time I was so overlevelled. First time was just me being an idiot too.

Tomo I’m not getting into this again because I think we already did it a few pages back but… I think it’s more likely that I’m about average and you’re more skilled than you realise. I’m lv150 now, but I still needed 4 or 5 attempts just to kill the last tree sentinel guy guarding Maliketh’s boss door. Mohg was easy enough, but the deathbirds in that area were tough. I’ve even struggled a bit with the crucible knights and banished knights in Farum Azula (yes, I know I should learn to parry). The extra health and damage from being high level does help, but the golden rule of every souls game is that even trash mobs can surprise you and do quite a bit of damage if you’re not paying attention. And I’m about to face at least 2 of the alleged toughest bosses in the game, for the very first time. I fully expect to have my arse handed to me a few times even with my 50 Vigor, STR and Faith. (Guess I got into it after all )

Also I know the most effective build would probably be to take all those Faith points out and split them across Strength and Vigor, because I’m only really using the Faith for a couple of buffs I could manage without, and the odd fire/lightning ranged attack. More effective but less fun.

You want 60 vigor for end game, like you say even normal enemies can truck you, especially in ER.
Malenia is widely regarded as the hardest Fromsoft boss so don’t be discouraged. I had to change my build to beat her. I used the Flamberge 2handed on her as it can stagger her, uses bleed, and swings are not too slow. Level up your mimic to max as well!
Max your weapon as well as Haligtree recommended level is 120 - 150

More effective but less fun. I'd say don't, because those buffs and extra heals you think you can manage without might be invaluable to survive the final boss... I know Lord's Divine Fortification helped me a lot, for instance

Yeah you want some holy resistance and there's a banger of a miracle for that (possibly what Jnr mentions above)

I’ve rolled another character (Hoof Hearted) and she’s currently rocking the Bloodhound Fang at +5 somber and not taking names of those affected by it.
I’m trying to sequence break a bit more, and need the other half of the Dectus medal to get up to Altus. I also want to do a bit more NpC stuff on this run, as neglected a lot on my main. Such a good game this, digital crack once you’re in and I haven’t played in a long time.

Yeah FROM games definitely have that magical quality where you’re craving to play them between sessions, the excitement of finding what’s round the corner is real
Resident Evil games do that too, you just can’t stop playing them once you start due to the excitement of what’s next
Except RE6 of course, which is the opposite, you can’t wait to STOP playing but it won’t seem to let you due to its inadequate checkpoint system

I beat Malenia! \o/ It took about 20 tries over 2 evenings - in the end, the winning strategy was to summon my mimic and use Wild Strikes ash of war with the Great Stars I’ve been using all game, and the cracked tear potion that rewards subsequent attacks. The bleed and stagger was ridiculous. Maybe a bit cheap, but a win’s a win! Looks like I’ll finally be finishing the game soon, just in time for the DLC

Cheap schmeap. Malenia deserves whatever you bring to win. Kudos.
Need to book that week off

Good work! I do think Elden Ring asks for more variation than other games so whatever works works 😎
Being able to power level past road blocks maybe hides it a bit, as does limited upgrade materials locking you to your best weapons for a long time. When I did my RL1 run, I really had to use different strategies and equipment for lots of different boss fights.

Really getting into the swing of this now... Well, I'm still shit but I've put a few more hours in today as the wife and child are finally away. Beers and Elden Ring afternoon! I cleared out Caria Manor! Still scared of the hands. Then I killed a mini-boss for the Loretta great bow spell.
Now I've been faffing about trying to remember which NPCs (Renna? Ranni?) are which as someone gave me a potion and there are some weird dolls lying around. I've no idea what's going on story wise anymore but even when you don't understand the details the world is just so engrossing to explore.
I'm now heading down into Siofra tunnels. I'm about level 60 I have no idea if this is a good idea.
I also realised I had a moonblade katana in my inventory so I've switched to that for now. Honestly I might have been better restarting with the amount I clearly don't understand/have forgotten. What a game.
