Shit, for some reason I thought it was a Friday night / Saturday, but its Thursday / Friday isn't it. I was tempted to WFH on Friday anyway, so I could probably get up early and play for a couple of hours before work still if I don't have to commute. If I get lucky with the little one napping I may be able to squeeze an hour in at lunch too.

I suppose it depends when it drops through the letterbox. And how big any patches are. Maybe Friday afternoon. Wow, it's this week, its really this week isn't it!

Honestly, if whatever other Int based class there is (Prisoner, was it?) doesn't catch my eye in the selection screen, that's probably what I'm doing too. As is, apparently, most of the thread 😄 In fairness, I'm a sucker for katanas so it was probably a foregone conclusion... plus I like having multiple options since this is the first Soulsborne game I'll properly play myself (gasp, shock etc) Still don't know why I never went back to my half-finished DS3 run, too many other games distracting me I guess... Not happening with this one though! If it is your first SoulsBorne it is probably best to not get too hung up about starting class. It won't really mean too much after the first couple of hours. It just dictates your starting weapon, armour and stat allocations. I don't know the details for Elden Ring, but normally some will start at a higher level, which really just means they are slightly less flexible initially. In reality though, it only really matters if you are going in with something specific in mind and are looking to min/max. The Deprived (or whatever they are going to call it here) is the most flexible, as you start at the lowest level and with a completely spread of stat points. This means you need less souls to start leveling up. You don't get any armour though and crap shield, so have to be able to dodge. Best bet for a first timer is probably to go with one with higher health or better armour, so you can take a few hits early on. I assume Samurai will likely be okay on those and will have a few points in dexterity, for the faster weapons. Sometimes the slower heavier strength weapons are better for newcomers, as you are less likely to try to squeeze in too many hits, but depends on your style. (Again, not read up on classes, so could all be wrong.)
Solid advice all around, but I wouldn't read too much into this "first SoulsBorne" Technically, it is, however, during the network test, he managed to beat both Margit (after watching me failing miserably time and time again) and that dragon in the swamps, not to mention Iudex on his first attempt in Dark Souls 3.
I guess having all the time in the world along with the reflexes of being 22 y.o. and being able to learn patterns/systems and stick with them (unlike me, who tend to forget everything) has some advantages
EDIT: If only I could get him to beat the Guardian Ape in Sekiro

Cheers for the tips, although I should note that I do have experience with the Souls/Nioh games in general, both from playing myself and from helping my dad with strategizing and watching him play... I've just never gotten around to finishing one for one reason or another 😅 Again though, this one as an open-world is even more up my alley than the rest so I highly doubt I'll bounce off of it this time. It helps that where the Xbox is set up pretty clearly defines my playtime so I'll have time for other games while it's dad's turn... No chance for burnout that way 😉 Edit: we didn't plan the double response, just saying

Also, I like you all agonising over whether you can play on Friday or not, meanwhile we just had a gander at our order and apparently it's projected to arrive sometime between the 5th and 10th of March?? Totally not jealous, no siree... 😛
Collector's Edition is worth it though and it's not like we don't have things to tide us over until then, it'll just be fun times tiptoeing around the Internet to avoid spoilers... YouTube especially is the worst for that, I'll be searching for, say, the Octopath soundtrack to relax and the next ("related") video will be "ALL Elden Ring endings EXPLAINED! MASSIVE revelations!!!" with literally the most spoilery thumbnail possible 🙄

I'm not touching that thing with a ten-foot pole, you already got far enough in the second phase to know how to finish it 😛

I’ll probably start as a wretch. I usually do with souls games then see where I go. Start by using whatever weapons and armour I find first and go from there. But I always eventually end up with a strength build on my first run.

Bleh. Game capped at 60 fps and no ultrawide support on PC. Was coming round to buying this, but there goes my preorder. Wait and see if modders fix it.

Alarm bells ringing on performance with the DF announcement. The network test looked very very ropey.

"We've seen reports that we're 'not allowed' to show Elden Ring performance pre-launch. Not strictly true: we've been asked to show performance analysis in our content based on the day one patch to show the game as you'll play it, which is a reasonable ask and nothing new."
If there is an issue it will probably be the pc version, as there reports of stuttering. I've not heard anybody refer to the network test as 'very very ropey' (here's hoping).

I do remember it stuttering and freezing a good bit at the camp outside the castle gates during the network test, but that was on Xbox One, not Series. It also didn't seem to happen anywhere else, not even with the swamp dragon weirdly enough... Still, console-wise it should only be last gen that struggles

Fuck, this is this weekend isn't it, I have to go away this weekend for some family shit.
Fucking family...
N. B. Annoyance involves more distant family than my own immediate family, i can cope with them, they don't interupt my vidya gamez playing.

Had some stutters and pop-in on PS5, but it all seemed very fixable and wasn't all that prevalent unless I was actively looking for it

Only heard of frequent drops to 50 fps, its not going to be a locked 60 fps but when has it ever been with From Software?
All I want is normal frame pacing above 50 fps framerate and little input lag on PS5. I still remember Blight town on PS3 and nothing that terrible will ever be seen in Elden Ring.

I don't really mind putting up with black bars, but this in ultra-wide would have been glorious. Was originally going to take Friday off for this, something I don't think I've ever done for game release before. Have family stuff in a couple of weeks though that I'm going to be using leave for, so probably shouldn't burn it all out.
