See I think what's more terrifying is the fact I can still vividly remember saying "still got three months to go until it's out mate" to my son like it was yesterday and now it's a week on Friday. Fuck me.

I reckon, visually, our whelms are going to be undered a bit, it’s going to have the vistas but not the exquisite texture detail, etc, of a Horizon type game. But in every other way it’s going to knock other shit into a cocked hat. Literally, someone whack me on the head, I want to sleep the next week away 😬

Ach it's always been about From's art design and world building more than technical achievements really isn't it. I'm actually expecting something looking nearly identical to Dark Souls 3, but open world. If it looks better than that I'll be shocked. The only thing that would be nice is if we didn't have the melty faces of Bloodborne or DS3.

That reminds me - what are people doing in the character creator? It's normal to make your first character look as much like you as possible before you put them through hell, right??

Indeed, the tone is much more important than the fidelity. I’ll be pissed off if the frame rate is ever Blightown-y though.

Whilst I've tried to not look at too much information on this game, my self control has slipped, just a little, and in no small part to From kindly spamming my 'Followed games' list on the PS5 with news detailing pictures and info of the character classes. So I've naturally headed over to Fextralife to see the current specs of the ER classes for a little more detail.
Hmmm, I'm super tempted to try an Astrologer class to start with, though I may come to regret this. I've never really bothered with going all-in on magic in a Souls game, but it might be time to change things up a bit. What concerns me is that, in typical mage fashion, they're likely to be a bit squishy and I'm normally used to kicking some arse whilst maintaining some resilience. I like the idea of firing off spells on horseback though...

I always make my first character a bit like me. My second character is always female, then from the third on they just get faces that they're really best keeping hidden under a helmet.

Rodderz Yeah I had a quick look at starting stats. I'm either a warrior or samurai because of the high dex, but not decided which yet.

I'm tempted to stick with strength, but I do like using bows for drawing out enemies, so maybe bandit's the one for me? Also like the idea of bow + horseback, depending on how fiddly it is.

You can also buy/craft sleep arrows in this, so potentially very powerful.
I've been havering about class choice, but I think I've just about settled on playing as a Wretch for the lols, see where it takes me. Or see how long it takes me to restart as a Vagabond.

It looks like Samurai can also use (long) bows as part of their class, not surprising given historically Samurai were originally experts at horseback archery. So you've probably got a couple of options open to you there hedben!

There's a Samurai class this time?!? Fuuuuuck... My first instinct would be to create a tank character, like the one that helped me through all Dark Souls games so far, but starting as a high dex could change that... Hopefully, we will be able to re-spec our characters easily

Its looking increasing likely I'll be starting on ps4, as ps5 drops are like rocking horse shit at the moment.
I guess I'll start with Dex and see where it takes me. I'll no doubt fuck up my character and have to start again anyway.

I'm really struggling to decide what starting class, I like various playstyles.
I'm tempted by high arcane for item discoverability (so Bandit would be a good fit, as it also has good dexterity and allows for kiting) but I'm also keen to play a hybrid melee/magic role so can alternate between the two and still have a decent range option for pulling aggro. I think I'll end up picking either Hero, Bandit, Prisoner or Confessor. I think...

I haven't looked too much at the classes but Bandit and Astrologer seem to appeal most.

So, what's Arcane about?

As far as I can tell, it's basically Luck, but I'm sure there's more to it than that, else they surely would have just called it Luck.

Need to have a look at the classes for sure, but also, the starting items can be influential too, ala master key in ds1 for example.
I see there's some weird branch thing.
Ah man, here we go again

From fextralife they say that arcane is the "attribute governing Discovery. Affects death resistance and certain sorceries and incantations."
Discovery "is a Base Stat that governs likelihood of finding items on the corpses of defeated foes". So that part is like Luck for sure.

99% certain I'm gonna go Wretch, with the Imp Summon as my starting gift (need all the help I can get). I shall follow the critical path as far as getting the horse, and then go map fragment hunting into the east, stopping to investigate anything that looks cool and presumably being murdered constantly.

Extra death resistance could be good, supposed to be Poison, Toxic and a third type of nasty slow death thing in this.

I'll certainly be focusing on death resistance. I like to think that, by now, I'm good enough so that I won't have TOO many problems. Then again, I thought the same when Sekiro came out, and that made me cry on the second day.

I'm a little concerned that it won't be too much of a challenge for a melee build, especially after getting the Plat on Sekiro.
The thread from Demons/Dark Souls to Bloodborne to Sekiro was incredible as every new entry forced you to reset your muscle memory and do things differently as a melee player. As hyped as I am for Elden Ring it looks like, as others have said, Dark Souls 4 and (hopefully mistakenly) it looks like I already know how to play it.
Here's hoping I'm talking absolute bollocks and it destroys me.
