I used to be firmly in the “holidays=throwing money away” camp but have changed my mind, so I say do it. I also follow the airline industry news on a technical level and, it is not going to get cheaper, so do it now.

I always preferred the self-catered DIY holidays to the all-inclusive resort ones. Though later I realised that's because my mum was doing all the cooking and washing etc.. just like at home. :-|
So resort hotels with a pool can be good for parents to get a break. That said, anywhere with a beach or swimming lake will probably keep the kids happy, and a few trips out of the hotel to experience actual overseas culture can't hurt.
I assume Europe would be cheaper, but maybe not so special.

Bill hits the nail on the head for me, my parents rented something small in France or Spain and mom did the cooking, so looking back that wasn’t much of a holiday for her. It’s also where I got the idea it’s throwing money away that you won’t ever get back. Looking back, I guess we just had limited means, although I never realised that as a kid.

Question: If you received a real life monopoly community chest card with a windfall enough for a family holiday would you blow it all on a first ever dream getaway for your brood, or save it for some needed house repairs (new windows/decorating that sort of thing)? I’d definitely blow it all on a new iPad Pro *cough*

In all seriousness, rent somewhere really special for a couple of weeks, and get it catered/eat out. Castle in Umbria or something. Invite extended family.

Sounded good until the extended family bit. Inviting potential of drama and annoyance.

Other than that 'not much of a holiday for her' bit, it was awesome though.
We always moaned about getting dragged to art galleries or cathedrals, but we also got to go to some cool castles and swimming lakes and kayak down gorges and amazing beaches etc..
Looking back on it it was a great experience.
It's why I never really want to go to fully catered resort hotels and spend 2 weeks at the hotel pool. Though in fairness that can be great too.
In terms of memories it's well worth it imho, and its why I always try and prioritize Experiences over Things these days.

Looks amazing. Need a few more years at least before we can take the little beast away with us. We are limited to UK holidays in cottages or wherever, where we can bring our own baby gate!

For a decent looking place, DR seems good value compared to doing something all inclusive or even half board in Europe. It’s kinda mad. 10 days at a resort in the canaries is the same prices as 14 in DR.

You don't really need a gate tbh. Babies aren't dangerous!

She's flown many times, before and after this developed, but basically needs to be treated loke BA Baracus for it to work. So we've tended to avoid such things.

My missus is like that. Had absolutely no problems with long haul flights on her own earlier in life, but now she's so terrified of it we've had to travel to Spain by train a few times. Can just about coax her on a short flight, but long haul is out of the question.

If you play the credit card game (Amex, Ba, Virgin) you can quite quickly accumulate enough points to fly premium or even business which makes the long haul flights a lot more tolerable.
It’s fairly easy as a couple but would probably be harder with kids.

I have a fear of flying. Used to be able to go to the Dr's and get some tablets before a flight. They've stopped doing it now or at least my GP has.
Have to hit the airport lounge free booze hard.

Whatever happened to guys in movies and TV shows doing the axe handle attack?
You never see it nowadays, a guy holding his hands together and pummeling the neck and back of an adversary with his combined fists/forearms.
If it was good enough for Captain Kirk, it's good enough for anybody.

Everyone has their own way of coping with air travel. Strangely I love it on a commercial flight, especially a bit of turbulence, very enjoyable indeed
Despite that I’d still never get in a helicopter, I just don’t trust them

I love air travel. Mainly for the movies (though that's less special now we all have VoD solutions at home), but also just for being able to sit and watch movies / read books while people bring me food and drink.
