...he had drastic plastic surgery, adopted the persona Billie Eilish and went on to have a string of hits.

Because if it's not that I don't know what you could be inferring to.

Ah wait. No I get it.
He escaped from his cage and is now living wild amongst his kind. On a summer's day we might just catch a glimpse of him running across the fields.
"That's him! That's our wrinky! Look at him go! He's so happy!"

I used to have a pet caterpillar that the neighbours were looking after for me whilst I was on holiday. That's kind of what happened. He turned into a beautiful butterfly whilst I was away and every summer would come back and visit me in my garden. He lived a long time and I loved him very much.

Question: If you received a real life monopoly community chest card with a windfall enough for a family holiday would you blow it all on a first ever dream getaway for your brood, or save it for some needed house repairs (new windows/decorating that sort of thing)?

Try and do both, in a more limited fashion granted.

The former, if it's really a first ever, and if the house isn't about to collapse. I got a smaller windfall last month! And the next day our oven broke.

Stick it on a mortgage overpayment This is the very sensible option, but for the last 10 years any pay rise I've had has gone straight into upping my pension until it was maxed out, and any (very small) bonus has been eaten up by the cost of living bullshit. So sod the mortgage this time around.

How much are we talking here? If the house isn't falling apart and you have a decent emergency fund already, then I'd say fuck it, have a decent holiday.
If your finances are already shit, then do the boring sensible thing.

Also since the mid-late 90’s when pro tools started to be regularly used, production qualities improved greatly and we now have near 30 year old albums that still sound great today and the production no longer ‘dates’ a song. I don't think PT can really be attributed to a great sounding master, or the lack of it a bad one. It made editing simpler, but was just replicating the same processes and manipulation that happened in the analogue realm. I'm not an analogue purist, but I really don't understand how you could think albums like Rumours, Dark Side of the Moon or Doolittle sound dated because of their production. Digital recording, especially in recent years, has allowed anyone to record, edit and mix music anywhere - this has certainly allowed more people to make and release music and reduced the barrier to entry (hiring an expensive studio and engineer). More people making music should hopefully result in more diverse sounds. So for smaller bands, for whom analogue studio time was limited or not an option, yes, they can get great results at home using digital editing, or cheaper time in a digital studio. But many would argue that a pure analogue chain still delivers the best results - especially if simply wanting to record a band without overly processing the sound.

How old are the kids though? Cos if they're tiny they'll have as much fun on a cheap vacation as a dream getaway tbh.
If they're actually old enough to appreciate it and enjoy it then I vote dream getaway

Very much a now or never thing tbh.

Finances aren't shit, but we've also never been able to afford a foreign holiday (because they all seem to start at 4 grand).

I think 10 and 13 is old enough to get value and memories out of a big trip.
No idea about holiday prices from the UK though, and only you know about your finances.
I'd have thought you could drive over to France and rent a house for less than 4 grand... but my prices are all stuck in the 90s so I'm probably wrong.

Yeah, we never really went on foreign holidays growing up and I have vivid memories of our first proper one to Barbados at that kind of age.

Can you not go somewhere a bit closer to home and all live it up with a holiday in the sun for a bit cheaper instead? So you can still keep a bit back for sensible shit? Good luck whatever you decide, teenagers can be a bit fickle with what they want to do (speaking from our experience at any rate!), so we tend to go to places in or near to larger cities with more option do 'stuff' or hit the shops or whatever the fuck they want to do if they get a lip on about it being a rather nebulous 'boring'.

I might be being overly cautious, but Dominican Republic is more of a stay in the grounds of your all inclusive hotel at all times kind of holiday, unless you're going out paid excursions. Not the kind of place I'd go if I wanted to just wander around and explore.

You're right. The mrs and I honeymooned there in 2007 and we've not really been able to get away since! She loved it so much and really wants to go back, albeit to a different resort, and take the kids. After a crappy few years I'm all up for relaxing for two weeks rather than wandering and exploring.
I'm normally the sole decision maker around here, so I could do with not having to think whilst away.

Splurge it on a holiday, man. You deserve it. Definitely this. We're in a similar position financially and have splurged on a holiday for the first time in forever, ahead of some inheritance. Will also be able to pay off some of the mortgage but really wanted to have a holiday that the kids will remember. 10 and 13 are good ages for that.
