Welp, to follow up in my open question a few months ago about what’s going to kill us: looks like it will be global warming after all, with a blue ocean ‘event’ happening by 2027. arctic-news.blogspot.com/p/blue-ocean-event.html?m=1Firstly, sea ice absorbs only about 30-50% of the sun’s energy, but the sea water absorbs 95%, radically increasing global temperatures. Secondly, the huge increase in meltwater in the northern oceans disrupts existing currents. International shipping will be fucked and supply chains will be disrupted, but most significantly the Gulf Stream will be pushed south, leading to environmental catastrophe in Europe and Africa. Thirdly, enormous amounts of methane will be released which was previously trapped under the ice. Then all the marine life will die. Then we will, too. 2027. Golf clap.

The Blue Ocean Event stuff makes its rounds in the conspiracy circles every few years, it’s the climatology equivalent of the Mayan end of the world. I know a ton of oceanographers and climatologists as my mum used to work for the NOC that helped compile the IPCC reports, and while they agree a so called blue ocean event is plausible (though not as fully catastrophic as that random blog implies), it’s decades away from a reality, not five.

I thought this blue ocean event would be something bad, like a giant whirlpool or the Bermuda triangle expanding.
So what if some marine life dies, plenty more fish in the sea.

Oh good, nothing to worry about then.
(Sorry - I thought this was legit)

It’s legit in a way in that it is a thing that could happen, but no one really knows when and most data models would say such an event is ages away. A zero ice summer results in a counter effect that would result in more ice for the next year, and what scenario that blog describes is one where the equilibrium is so out of whack the counter effect can’t outweigh the melt, and thus becomes a permanent state over several years. We’ve yet to experience a single ice free summer, let alone the consistent pattern that would overwhelm the equilibrium. It’s on trend for it, sure, but even conservatively it’s decades, so it’s not at any kind of tipping point…yet.

I don’t really believe in the gaia hypothesis, but there’s a lot of things we simply don’t know yet. Faint young sun paradox still blows my mind.

What makes you doubt the gaia hypothesis?

Even the proponents aren’t sure about it, that’s why it’s a hypothesis, not a theory.

Waiting in the barbers. One of the hairdressers is very gently arguing with a guy about how to cut his mullet. She wants to put layers in it so it’s at least ‘looks normal’ and he wants it bluntly cut like a fringe.

I still can't believe that mullets are back. A mate of our lad has one. I saw it at their recent football match and it was horrific.
Our boy has been told he's sleeping in the garage if anything like that hair monstrosity appears upon his head.
Did folk learn nothing from the 80's? It was NOT a stylish decade. I can only assume the aussies or new zealanders are to blame, since it never really seemed to leave their haircut options.

They compromised with a bad mullet but slightly feathered at the ends rather than it being completely blunt and straight as a ruler.
It did make me wonder about the ethics of hairdressing. Like would you let someone have a haircut that made them look like an absolute cunt or would you just do it and collect your money?

I'm normally pretty good at going somewhere in not used to and making a mental map, being able to get where I need to go fairly easily and intuitively. But Manchester's road layout and design just makes no sense. It just feels utterly alien compared to everywhere else. Bristol, London, Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham, wherever, they usually make some sense. Manchester just feels like it had no thought or planning when it comes to road layout.
That's not saying it's a bad city or anything like that. Just very unusual.

Hats off. Ive only ever seen one other person try the whirlpool method and half the beer came out of their nose. And maybe some out of their eyes.
