I also have a family Christmas gathering every year in November. It frees up actual Christmas for a chilled one at home. Think it must be quite common in large families where it would be difficult/impractical to do the same thing on Christmas day.
No homeschooled zealots among my in-laws, although my BIL and FIL are/were both Baptist ministers. I'll be sure to ask whether they've heard the good word of Robojesus.

Oh my fucking god. One of them has just subjected me to half an hour of YouTube videos of his brass band playing painful covers with commentary on the different types of trombone, tuba, cornet etc that feature. He plays a tuba but is switching to a baritone trombone. I fucking hate brass bands. There are different kinds of trombone? At least we've learned something from your pain. ETA It's to late now but roll out the Thomas Beecham quote next time "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away."

There's different varieties of most kinds of wind instrument, usually in different keys. There are standard versions (say, B-flat for clarinet, C for trumpet), but you'll see others from time to time.
/used to play in a band

My favourite name for one of them is the contrabassoon. The illegal bassoon.

If you don't like brass bands you haven't listened to the right ones. Give Young Blood Brass Bands "wrestlevania" a go.

Having spent all morning watching telly, I think I can say that this year's crop of Christmas adverts is very good.

Oh, that makes sense, I never thought it could be done that way.

Visiting family this weekend. I do like them but frankly I'm feeling very tetchy and irritable, could really do with a few hours alone. Then working again tomorrow and have social stuff nearly every evening this week, then away with friends next weekend.
These are all people I like but I could really do with a couple of nights to just potter around, get drunk and do stuff without having to consider anyone else.

I think this is it; this is me having a mid-life crisis.
I've recently found myself sowing band patches onto some old skinny fit jeans, to try and make some kind of pretend crust punk hosen, and now I'm considering getting a denim vest and sowing patches onto that, to make a "battle vest"
I've not actually worn the jeans yet, and it's unlikely I'd wear the denim vest. I'm nearly 40, rarely go to pubs let alone gigs and whilst once being part of the "scene" I've not been into the "scene" for a good decade and a half.
Should note I've also grown my hair long enough to obtain an undercut man bun and already own a leather jacket (though no patches on that, thankfully).
Maybe I just hope all these accoutrements will distract from my stubborn middle aged beer gut.

If it's any consolation I pierced my ear just before I turned 40 and I still own and proudly wear my leather jacket even though the patches have long since come off. Can't grow my hair long as I don't fucking have any but if I could, I would.

FWIW, if youre trying to get down with the kids, the kids are taking the piss out of people in skinny jeans.

I went with my daughter into urban outfitters a few weeks ago and was heartened/devastated to see that it looked like someone got in a time machine and raided my early/mid 90s wardrobe. The baggiest jeans, the wildest patterns. The only thing missing was some Joe Blogs jeans and a naff naff jacket for the ladies.

Those were the days.
Mind you, I can't really criticise other's choices. I've got woodland camo combats on. In the kitchen.
