Danno no it's fine, I sure as hell FEEL scummy drinking here (I am now leaving. Might try to use more than 99p worth of bog roll on my way out, so I don't feel like I'm lining Tim's pockets)

Having worked at spoons... It is all bollocks. The beer is good and they actually have great quality control. What they have is a huge market presence that let's them buy fucking cheap.
Same with food. It is all okay quality but they leverage.
There is no watering down or expired stuff. Just leverage dominance.

It's been a long time since I've been to a Wetherspoons, but I remember the beer tasting chemically as fuck.

I fucking hate spoons and hope they go bust. But that is due to ethics, pay, the way they treat staff and brexit. They actually do have one of the best quality control around. Here's a random quiz. What % of beer are you expected to sell as a wetherspoons manager? As in you have 100 pints in a barrel, how much should you sell?

96 1.5 for running the line and 2.5 for drippage and spillage 105. Same as greene King fullers etc. 10% head, means 110 pints, but they kindly let you have spillage and line cleaning. Cider 100 Spirits 98 They really are a bunch of mercenary cunts. There is a reason I don't run pubs anymore and went back into finance.

Just to add to the scummy vibe...
While I was having my ridiculously cheap pint, my bike was stolen from the racks across the road. Locked with a cheap chain lock, didn't think it was even worth stealing (Halfords hybrid, £300 new and very well worn)
Brilliant

It's right in the town square so I'd have expected CCTV, but I couldn't see any obvious ones. There was also a shitty bike in the next rack over which was completely unlocked- almost like they arrived on it and "traded up"

Shitty locks are a bike thief's dream. I only intended to buy one bike lock in my life, so it's a goodun. Marketplace is flooded with £50 bikes.

Yeah I'll definitely get some monster indestructible D-Lock after this, although I'll probably need one for each wheel and one for the frame if I'm being really thorough...

From what i understand ‘spoons doesn’t have any expired stock etc, so no real need to be snobby about the quality of the pints. And the food to me is exactly the same for 20 quid as paying 60 quid for a family meal out at a nice looking ‘chain’ pub (fullers, Greene king).
Moaning about the amount of head in a pint is a bit silly if you are also getting that pint for a half to a third of a pint elsewhere - although I’d still ask them to top up if ridiculous.
I presume it’s all done via minimum wage staff etc, but I also assume that’s the same in all other pubs. So, scummy owner aside, I quite like them.

knightyCan't say I've eaten in many Fullers pubs for comparison, but our local one is pretty consistently great for food compared to a meal you'd know was cooked at Spoons even if the plate didn't already give it away. Massive gulf in quality between the two imo.

Yeah, as much as I loathe spoons, their beer is usually good. Food less so but for the price, not sure you can complain.

I love Spoons for its incredibly urbane and learned clientele.
