Weird I never even heard of them. Maybe it's a big-in-japan type situation.

I can't stand Bring Me The Horizon and it's all down to Ollie Sykes being a cunt of the highest order.
Used to bump into him now and again as our friend circles overlapped a little and we're the same age. Absolute prick.
Sorry for the rant but he really is that big of an asshole.

Didn’t he piss on a girl who turned him down after a gig or something like that?
I know they completely changed their sound but its still weird that of all the bands kicking around back then they’d be the one to get massive

I can totally see that, how girls will see past the shithouse behaviour cos he's a good looking boy that sings about his feelings, n shit.

I remember when BMTH were first band on at hardcore shows in Sheffield. They were shit then and they're shit now. And yes, Sykes is a fucking wanker.

Classic example of being in the hardcore scene only as a stepping stone to rockstar status. When I was active in the scene say 1998-2007 you could always spot those bands a mile off. Always blagging onto shows, never putting on shows and a unhealthy focus on merch and image.
Kind of band that would have an official photoshoot before they've even put out a demo.

The bleachers o2 institute in Brum.
Only a half fan as only really know their greatest hits but now a big fan as it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Nearly all their songs sound better live and the performance and crowd interaction was some of the best. Wicked little venue as well.

DJ shadow at "HERE at Outernet" London
Absolutely brilliant live set, think he played for a good 2 hours, loads of old and new tracks, genre hopping, plenty of scratching, cool visuals throughout. Great stuff.

Creeper at Sheffield Leadmill, superb as always. But in a packed out smaller venue, it's a reminder of what's so great about live music.

Just saw Pendulum in Cardiff.
First support act was ShockOne with a DJ set that I quite enjoyed, got the crowd pretty amped up.
Second one was scarlxrd, who I didn't really enjoy at all. Spent their whole set thinking that they could spend more time making their music decent and less time on editing random bits of about twenty different animes into a distracting video backdrop.
Nearly half an hour of dead-air between them finishing and Pendulum coming on, because apparently a bang on 9pm start time is non-negotiable or something. Was useful for getting in a piss break and another round of drinks though.
Fucking hell, was it worth the wait though. Absolute bangers of a set list from start to finish. Visual feast as well, four large screens being utilised to their full advantage, and stuff being projected onto the edges of the stage platforms too.
EDIT:
Danno may want to avert thine eyes at the 13:00 mark.

Recent(ish) gigs catch up…
Feeder (Portsmouth) - as excellent as ever and the new album tracks (album coming soon) sounded for the most very good. Loudest soundboard mix in a long time which was deafening at times especially for the support act. Overall great. 8/10
Country 2 Country (O2 London) (Brothers Osborne and Elle King especially) - BO on great form! Elle King a bit disappointing tbh which was a shame!
Sea Girls (Koko London) - they were well up for the gig and ripped through a packed 1hr10mins set which seemed short in time but packed a punch. New album tracks were terrific live and they put in a good handful of original EPs tracks which was fantastic. The place was bouncing and everyone was singing. 8.5/10

Anyone have experience with using earplugs at gigs? There are supposed to be ones that reduce the volume without messing up the acoustics or preventing you talking to people. Any idea if they actually do as promised? Partly for the purposes of preserving my own hearing, which definitely isn't as sharp as it was when I was a youngster, and partly for the purposes of not destroying my kids hearing when they go to their first rock festival. I never worried about standing 2 feet in front of a massive bank of speakers for 2 hours, but I'm slightly regretting that now.

I've been using them recently. Nothing too fancy but I'm intrigued by the fancy gig specific ones.
I've been at gigs where I actually think it improved the sound quality. Particularly for loud bands who like to turn everything up, and especially if there's a bad sound mix, I think the treble can be a bit piercing, distorted almost white noise, but ear plugs do a good job at smoothing out the harshest noise.

I've got some (pretty cheap) that I always bring with me now, after a couple of brutally loud shows (Godflesh where they had to stop and start a song again because the laptop got vibrated off it's stand onto the floor, and High Command at the black heart), where I could almost feel my hearing getting worse in real time. I also have tinnitus that I really don't want to get worse. Some gigs you don't need them but I tend to put them in, it does slightly take the edge off sometimes but after a couple of mins having them in you won't notice. It's only the really loud ones where I'd say it actively makes them sound better though. One heavy drum and bass club really needed it, and stuff like the 2 shows I mentioned above that were literally painfully loud. In short, get some and take them with you, and try them out. If you go to a lot of shows just wear them and don't look back, I wish I'd done it when younger instead of being an idiot! Edit: just to add, I'd be interested to know if expensive ones are much better... I just use these Fender Musician Series Ear Plugs - 27db Noise Reduction - Black, 099-0542-000 amzn.eu/d/0z88Nah

To echo drhickman, I use them occasionally for my own band (I always lose them hence the occasionally).
Go to any gig and stick your fingers in your ears. You’ll get a similar effect, although the plugs are obviously a bit better. It generally sounds better but does reduce the thump in the chest power effect so there trade offs. However it tames all the bad frequencies and lets you hear separation and individual instruments in the mix MUCH better - obviously subject to how good the mixing is in the first place. And you’ll definitely get less ringing afterwards.
They often come on a little bungee so you can hang them round your neck and dip in and out of protection. You’ll obviously hear people around you a bit less so bear that in mind for communicating with whoever you’re with - but people talk far too much at gigs as it is. I saw some recent footage of one of the new Squire/Gallagher gigs and it sounded like a Wetherspoons in there.
Regards the whole Sykes/scene kids thing, basically they pretended to be metal but had/have full on emo trappings and in hindsight that whole thing was disgustingly misogynistic - Absolute Radio who we listen to still play the odd emo track and the lyrics are just absolute eeeesh. Always remember Glassjaw being touted as heart on sleeve but muh feelings sensitive Sally champions whilst singing lyrics about ‘you can lead a wh*re to water’ (see what they did there guys?! Guys? Anyone?!’
Glad it’s a dead/dying scene tbh and the amount of abuse stories that has come from it is horrific. That’s before I get into the music! End rant/thread drift sorry!

I have a cheap pair off Amazon and they muffle it a bit to my mind, and occasionally I have to remove one to talk/listen easier but they were a godsend at Alain Johannes the other day as the venue was tiny and I’ve just had a poor result at an hearing test due to essentially sitting in speakers at gigs in my youth.

Booked a VIP platform ticket for Idles at Cardiff Castle in July (few days before my birthday so a present to myself) - never been to the venue, but as I'll be going on my own I just thought I'd upgrade myself to a platform with "luxury" toilets and a private bar. I've seen Idles before (Eden Project a couple of years ago) so wasn't in a mad rush to see them again (even though I love them, gigs these days can sometimes feel like a hassle for me) but they confirmed their support acts just before the weekend and one of the bands for that night are a relatively new band called Sprints who I really, really like and would love to see, so that swayed me.
No other gigs on the horizon at the moment though.

I remember seeing Swans and they were handing out earplugs for free on the way in. Didn't understand why until they started playing. Loud is an understatement.

Got tickets for Iron & Wine in Cambridge for Halloween. Always loved him and don’t think he tours much, so yeah. Not keen on standing, but so it goes, it’s not a huge venue so fingers crossed

Wanted to see Interpol in Manchester (purely for Bright Lights/Antics material - everything after that is fairly poor) but tickets are £90 for a simple standing ticket - no chance I'm paying that.

As someone who has tinnitus quite badly in one ear due to too many loud gigs, get the earplugs as even if it makes the sound slightly worse it beats living with this fucking ringing for the rest of your life.
I used to love absolute silence, I despise it now as it's torture.
